7 1 Articoli, sostantivi, aggettivi, pronomi Level 1 Unit Articoli determinativi e indeterminativi The è l articolo determinativo che corrisponde a il, lo, la, i, gli, le : the man, the woman, the children l uomo, la donna, i bambini The si usa per indicare qualcosa di specifico. Non si usa quando si parla di cose in generale: We like music. Ci piace la musica. (= la musica in generale) ma We like the music of that compilation. Ci piace la musica di quella raccolta. (= quella musica di quella raccolta in particolare.) Nota la differenza. Nella frase Sugar isn t good for you (Lo zucchero non ti fa bene) si dice che lo zucchero in generale non fa bene. Nella domanda Where s the sugar? (Dov è lo zucchero?) si fa riferimento allo zucchero in una confezione o un barattolo particolare. Quando si parla di nazioni, the si usa solo con quelle al plurale o con quelle che nel nome contengono le parole Republic, Kingdom, State: Italy, Spain, ma the USA, the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic. A / An corrispondono agli articoli indeterminativi un, uno, una : a book, an orange juice un libro, un succo di frutta A si usa davanti a una consonante (comprese h, w, x, y): a burger, a weekend, a yoghurt un sostantivo che inizia con il suono /ju/ o /w/: a euro, a university, a one-way ticket An si usa davanti a una vocale: an apple, an egg, an orange pullover Quando si parla della professione di una persona si deve usare sempre a / an: My mum s an engineer. Dad s a teacher. Mia mamma è ingegnere. Papà è insegnante. One (= numero uno) si usa solo quando stai contando. In tutti gli altri casi si usa a / an. 6

8 Grammar 1 Level 1 Units 2, Plurale dei sostantivi sostantivo + s animal animals Singolare computer friend Plurale computers friends La maggior parte dei sostantivi forma il plurale aggiungendo una -s: banana k bananas holiday k holidays Alcuni sostantivi formano il plurale in modo diverso. Se terminano con -s, -ss, -sh, -ch, -x, -z, si aggiunge -es per motivi di pronuncia: kiss k kisses watch R watches -y preceduta da consonante, la -y si trasforma in -i e si aggiunge -es: diary k diaries city k cities -y preceduta da vocale, si aggiunge solo -s: guy k guys toy k toys -f o -fe, a volte cambiano in -ves: shelf k shelves wife k wives Alcuni sostantivi che terminano in -o aggiungono -es: tomato k tomatoes hero k heroes Ci sono alcuni sostantivi che formano il plurale in modo irregolare. Singolare Plurale man men uomo k uomini woman women donna k donne child children bambino k bambini person people persona k persone (popolo/gente) fish fish pesce k pesci mouse mice topo k topi foot feet piede k piedi Anche i composti di man e woman hanno il plurale irregolare. fireman k firemen Quando usi il plurale ricorda che: gli aggettivi non variano; a / an non si possono usare con il plurale: It's a big box. k They're big boxes. 7

9 Grammar Level 1 Unit Aggettivi e pronomi dimostrativi Vicino a chi parla this questo / questa these questi / queste Lontano da chi parla that quello / quella those quelli / quelle This e these indicano uno o più oggetti, animali o persone molto vicini a chi parla (così vicini da poterli toccare). That e those indicano uno o più oggetti, animali o persone non vicini a chi parla (da indicare col dito). Possono essere usati con un nome e in questo caso sono aggettivi: This girl. Questa ragazza. Those books. Quei libri. senza un nome e in questo caso sono pronomi: What s that? Che cos è quello? These are my grandparents. Questi sono i miei nonni. Solo that può essere contratto con il verbo be: That s my Maths teacher. Quello è il mio insegnante di matematica. This si usa spesso per identificarsi all inizio di una telefonata e per presentare una persona: Hello! This is Matthew. Is Ellen in? Salve! Sono Matthew. C è Ellen? Hi, Ann! This is my friend Joe. Ciao, Ann! Questo è il mio amico Joe. Level 1 Unit Pronomi personali soggetto Singolare Plurale I io we noi you tu you voi he egli / lui she ella / lei they essi/e it esso/a In inglese i verbi devono essere sempre accompagnati da un soggetto (chi o che cosa compie l azione). Se non c è un nome comune o proprio di persona, si deve usare un pronome personale: Sono tedeschi. k They re German. Sono uno studente. k I m a student. 8

Mary e io siamo buoni amici. you corrisponde alla forma confidenziale tu, a quella di cortesia Lei e a voi : Good morning, Mrs Smith! How are you? Buongiorno, signora Smith! Come sta? he si riferisce a persona maschile: He is an intelligent boy. È un ragazzo intelligente. she si riferisce a persona femminile: She is a nice girl. È una ragazza simpatica. it si riferisce a cose e animali non domestici: It is a big house. È una casa grande. quando ci si riferisce ad animali domestici, di cui si conosce il sesso, si usa he o she: My cat s name is Tom and he s very sweet. Il mio gatto si chiama Tom ed è molto dolce. they corrisponde al plurale di he, she e it e si riferisce, quindi, a persone maschili o femminili, a cose o animali: They are my parents. Loro sono i miei genitori. It si usa anche per persone non ancora identificate: - Who is it? - It s me, Jessica. - Chi è? - Sono io, Jessica. Level 1 Unit Pronomi personali complemento Pronomi personali soggetto complemento I me you you he him she her it it we us you you they them I pronomi complemento si usano quando non sono soggetto della frase. Seguono un verbo: I don t know her. Non la conosco. una preposizione: They play football with me. Giocano a calcio con me. 9

11 Grammar 1.6 Aggettivi Gli aggettivi non variano, cioè hanno un unica forma al singolare e plurale, al maschile e femminile: He is a clever boy. È un ragazzo intelligente. She is a clever girl. È una ragazza intelligente. They are clever children. Sono bambini intelligenti. precedono sempre il nome cui si riferiscono ma seguono il verbo essere : An interesting book. Un libro interessante. This book is interesting. Questo libro è interessante. Level 1 Unit Aggettivi possessivi my il mio, la mia, i miei, le mie your il tuo, la tua, i tuoi, le tue il suo, la sua, i suoi, le sue his (di persona maschile) il suo, la sua, i suoi, le sue her (di persona femminile) il suo, la sua, i suoi, le sue its (di oggetti o animali) our il nostro, la nostra, i nostri, le nostre your il vostro, la vostra, i vostri, le vostre their il loro, la loro, i loro, le loro L aggettivo possessivo è uguale per i nomi singolari e plurali, maschili e femminili, precede sempre il nome a cui si riferisce e non è mai preceduto dall articolo: l amico tuo k your friend la nostra aula k our classroom concorda con il genere del possessore, non con la cosa posseduta. Ricorda His si usa quando il possessore è una persona maschile: His name s Harry. Il suo nome è Harry. Her si usa quando il possessore è una persona femminile: Her name s Sophie. Il suo nome è Sophie. Its si usa quando ci si riferisce a una cosa o animale non domestico: London is a green city. Its parks are beautiful. Londra è una città verde. I suoi parchi sono belli. Your corrisponde a tuo, vostro e Suo (forma di cortesia): What s your mobile number, Mrs Wood? Qual è il suo numero di cellulare, Mrs Wood? Attenzione a non confondere his (= suo di lui) con he s (= egli è) e its (= suo riferito a cosa o animale) con it s (= esso è). 10

12 Grammar 1 Level 2 Unit Pronomi possessivi I pronomi possessivi sostituiscono l aggettivo possessivo e il nome della cosa posseduta. This is my bike, that s yours (= your bike). Questa è la mia bici, quella è la tua (= la tua bici). Aggettivo possessivo my mine your yours his his her hers its our ours your yours their theirs Pronome possessivo A eccezione di mine e his, i pronomi possessivi si formano aggiungendo -s all aggettivo possessivo. Il pronome riferito a cose o animali è usato raramente. Come gli aggettivi possessivi i pronomi sono invariabili; non sono preceduti da un articolo; his e hers concordano con il genere del possessore, non con la cosa posseduta: It s David s guitar. È la chitarra di David. It s his guitar. È la sua chitarra. It s his. È la sua. Level 1 Units 1, 5 Level 2 Unit Parole interrogative Le domande che iniziano con una parola interrogativa, question word, servono per chiedere informazioni specifiche. What è il pronome e aggettivo interrogativo che corrisponde a che cosa, quale, che : A: What is it? A: Che cos è? B: It s my laptop. B: È il mio portatile. A: What s her name? A: Qual è il suo nome? B: It s Sheila. B: È Sheila. L espressione What time is it? serve per chiedere l ora. L espressione What... like? corrisponde alla domanda Come è? / Come sono? : A: What s your flat like? A: Com è il tuo appartamento? B: It isn t very big. B: Non è molto grande. What like? serve anche per informarsi sul tempo atmosferico: A: What s the weather like today? B: It s sunny and windy. A: Com è il tempo oggi? B: C è il sole e c è vento. per chiedere notizie sull aspetto fisico e/o carattere di una persona: A: What s Joe like? B: He s friendly and attractive. A: Com è Joe? Who è il pronome interrogativo che corrisponde a chi (riferito a persona): A: Who are they? A: Chi sono? B: They re my parents. B: Sono i miei genitori. When corrisponde a quando : A: When is your birthday? A: Quando è il tuo compleanno? B: It s on Sunday. B: È domenica. Where corrisponde a dove : Where are my keys? Where are you from? Dove sono le mie chiavi? Da dove vieni? How corrisponde a come, in che modo : How are you? Come stai? How serve anche per chiedere l età: A: How old are you? A: Quanti anni hai? B: I m 12. B: Ne ho 12. Why corrisponde a perché?. Nella risposta si usa because: A: Why is James in a hurry? A: Perché James ha fretta? B: Because he has a date. B: Perché ha un appuntamento. Level 2 Unit Whose Si usa Whose (= di chi?) per sapere chi è il possessore di qualcosa. Whose ha due costruzioni: Whose + cosa posseduta + be Whose skateboard is this / that? Di chi è questo / quello saketboard? Whose + be + cosa posseduta Whose are these / those rollerskates? Di chi sono questi / quei pattini? Alla domanda con Whose si può rispondere con il genitivo sassone: It s Samuel s skateboard. È lo skateboard di Samuel. l aggettivo possessivo: It s his skateboard. È il suo skateboard. il pronome possessivo: It s his. È il suo. Non confondere whose con who s (= chi è) anche se la pronuncia è uguale. 12
