These are exercises to go along with my article, Using Articles in Italian. First, let s consider the use of gender in Italian: 1. Singular masculine nouns usually end with the letter. 2. Plural masculine nouns usually end with the letter. 3. Singular feminine nouns usually end with the letter. 4. Plural feminine nouns usually end with the letter. Some Italian nouns end with "e". They can be masculine OR feminine. The only way to know their gender is by consulting a dictionary or deducing it from the article preceding the noun. 5. Can you think of examples? 6. For nouns ending with e the plural form ends with. I. DEFINITE ARTICLES WITH MASCULINE NOUNS Italian definite articles introduce a specific or defined person or thing. They agree in gender and in number with the noun that follows. 7. The definite article used for regular singular masculine nouns is, [like libro] or if the noun starts with a vowel [like albergo]. 8. The definite article used for regular plural masculine nouns is [like libri], or if the plural noun starts with a vowel [like alberghi]. In the previous section on gender, notice that I kept mentioning the word, usually ; this is because there are exceptions, known as irregular nouns. 9. 2 IMPORTANT: Here are some additional special conditions that we have studied and practiced regarding masculine nouns: For nouns that start with z [like zaino]; that start with s followed by a consonant [like studente]; that start with ps [like psicologo]; that start with pn [like pneumatico]; that start with gn [like gnomo]; and that start with y [like yogurt], you must use the following definite articles: 10. Use the definite article for singular masculine nouns; 11. Use the definite article for plural masculine nouns. II. DEFINITE ARTICLES WITH FEMININE NOUNS 12. The definite article used for regular feminine nouns that start with a consonant is for singular nouns [for example, penna], or for plural nouns [for example, penne]. 13. The definite article used for regular feminine nouns that start with a vowel is for singular nouns [for example, arancia], or for plural nouns [for example, arancie]. The indefinite article used for regular singular masculine nouns is. [for example: Cerco medico.] For regular plural masculine nouns, use a number (due, tre, ) or other expressions (un po di, molti ) Back in section I we examined how definite articles are used with masculine nouns that begin with certain letters or letter combinations (z, s+consonant, ps, pn, gn, y). This rule also applies to indefinite articles used with singular masculine nouns. 44. The indefinite article is used for singular masculine nouns that meet these criteria. IV. INDEFINITE ARTICLES WITH FEMININE NOUNS 45. The indefinite article used for regular feminine nouns that start with a consonant is for singular nouns [for example, penna]. 46. The indefinite article used for regular feminine nouns that start with a vowel is for singular nouns [for example, arancia].
