The first bathing establishment, which was the precursor of others throughout Italy, opened in the summer of 1843 on the beach in Rimini, the Province s capital. Due to its extraordinary solidity and resistance its alternative name - the devil s bridge - is still appropriate. The arch was built in 27 B.C., by order of the Roman Senate, as an entrance gate to honour Caesar Octavian Augustus for having repaired the Via Flaminia and the most important roads in Italy. Today, it stands isolated, like a large triumphal arch, but was originally part of the city walls. It has a single barrel vault that, due to its length (almost nine metres), could never have been closed; an unusual fact for an entrance gate. Al suo interno si trovano il Municipio e le istituzioni culturali: il Museo dei fossili e l Esposizione permanente di maioliche di Mondaino. In una sala è conservato l affresco raffigurante la Madonna del Latte di Bernardino Dolci (sec. XV). Nelle sale del Museo Paleontologico sono custoditi e catalogati fossili provenienti da Mondaino e territori circostanti: una bella raccolta con reperti spettacolari, impronte sulla roccia di pesci (ben 21 specie), altri animali e piante di circa 4 milioni di anni fa. Di notevole interesse è la raccolta di maioliche rinascimentali di cui Mondaino fu importante centro di produzione. It is a beautiful collection, with spectacular exhibits such as fish (21 different species), other animals and plants printed on rocks and dating from 4 million years ago.
