Opposite page: the Maori 78 under way Although the Maori has something of a military stance, partly as a result of its livery and pure, clean lines, it is actually a new take on the super-tender concept aimed at a highly select group of owners. The kind who already own other boats - everything from cruisers to round-the-worlders - and are looking for something a little sportier, a fast commuter to take them where they want to go in a hurry on weekends. However, it will equally fit the bill for the likes of beach house owners who spend a good deal of their holiday time on the water, be it in Saint Barth s or Porto Cervo. The Maori 78 has the space and comfort demanded by owners who will want to sleep aboard (below decks, two roomy cabins the owner s and one guest). However, the main focus remains on ensuring that they enjoy their holiday or weekend to the full with as much sunbathing, sea swimming and conviviality in luxury surroundings as they like. The 78 does not stint on performance either. Packing twin 1800 hp MAN D2862LE433 engines coupled with Jolly Drive surface drives, it makes a very nippy 40 knots at full throttle. The Maori line, which up to now encompasses the 9m Sport, Maori 37, 50 and 52, was entrusted to one of the best names in Italian yacht design, Mario Pedol and his Nauta Design studio, for the design and waterlines. "The design input I received was very clear. The leitmotif was to be contact with the sea, clarifies Pedol. The feeling of closeness to that particular element that only a tender can deliver. So we worked on keeping the boat as low, as near to the water, as L aspetto marziale ce l'ha, anche per via del colore. Ma il Maori 78 non è una nave da guerra, bensì un'interpretazione dello yacht fatto tender, anzi supertender, che si rivolge a un pubblico decisamente di nicchia. All armatore che magari ha già altre barche, da crociera o addirittura da giro del mondo, e vuole qualcosa di più sportivo, un fast commuter con cui arrivare velocemente a destinazione. Oppure al proprietario di una villa al mare, che vuole avere la possibilità di scorrazzare velocemente lungo il litorale. Evoluzione dei modelli precedenti, il 78 è oggi l'ammiraglia del cantiere, una barca dove la funzione di ogni forma o soluzione è pensata principalmente per un uso giornaliero, o al massimo per un weekend. Ideale quindi per bagni in mare e di sole e uscite in compagnia. Il suo alto livello tecnico e progettuale le consente comunque di avere sottocoperta due ampie e comode cabine, un'armatoriale e una ospiti, che consentono di rimanere a bordo per più giorni senza troppi problemi. A a prua c'è invece quella per l'equipaggio. Le prestazioni, inutile dirlo, sono di rilievo, soprattutto se si considera la lunghezza fuori tutto di oltre 24 metri. Con la spinta di due Man da cavalli l uno, combinata a un sistema di eliche di superficie Jolly Drive, il Maori 78 raggiunge infatti in souplesse i 40 nodi di velocità massima. La linea Maori, che è declinata nei modelli 9m Sport, Maori 37, 50, 52, è stata affidata, per quel che concerne design e linee d'acqua, a uno dei migliori interpreti dello yacht design italiano, ovvero Mario Pedol e il suo studio Nauta Design. «L'input progettuale ricevuto era molto chiaro, il leit motiv doveva essere il contatto con il mare», ci ha detto Pedol, «quella sensazione di vicinanza all'elemento che proprio il tender sa dare. Abbiamo dunque lavorato per mantenere la barca quanto più bassa, vicina all'acqua, 75

5 possible, but with the al fresco spaces that a superyacht would have. All themes we are used to tackling as a studio, having worked a lot in the sailing sector. They were not too difficult to transfer to the Maori 78. Her plumb bow apart, the model has other similarities with megayachts, including a very broad stern and we also tried to maximise the connection between deck and sea too. The large central sun pad area has a poolside look to it. "What is really unusual about this design, explains Pedol, is that we created full-height interiors without having to raise the sides and the main deck. The studio and the yard worked hard together on that and achieved a genuinely noteworthy end result. We also greatly liked the bow area which is kitted out as a cockpit and thus affords excellent privacy even when the yacht is in berth in a marina. Clearly, the interiors are very generous and airy while the yard s meticulous attention to detail is evidenced by a string of customisations that really add an extra layer of sophistication. Model number one, however, is different from the rendering delivered by Nauta Yachts. Her Eastern European owner preferred a less Mediterranean design and so, instead of choosing the version proposed by the Milan studio, entrusted the interior décor and organization to the German designers of Egg and Dart. The result is a more classic but perhaps less cheerful boat than that designed by the Milan studio but more in harmony with the lifestyle of the owner. Fra le similitudini con i maxiyacht, oltre alla prua dritta, c'è la poppa larga che offre molto spazio e che abbiamo cercato di massimizzare quale trait d'union fra coperta e mare». Come dargli torto? A guardarla, con il suo ampio prendisole centrale, sembra proprio un lussuoso bordo vasca, solo che anziché sull'acqua della piscina si affaccia sul mare. «La vera particolarità del progetto», prosegue Pedol, «è stata comunque creare interni a tutta altezza senza dover alzare le murate e il ponte di coperta, un lavoro sul quale il nostro studio e il team del cantiere hanno lavorato molto e in piena sinergia per arrivare a un risultato secondo me degno di nota», conclude l'architetto. Molto interessante anche la zona di prua, allestita come un pozzetto e dunque utilizzabile in totale privacy anche quando la barca è ormeggiata in porto. Gli interni sono ampi e ariosi tanto da sembrare quelli di un motoryacht, estremamente curati e impreziositi da piccoli dettagli custom che fanno indubbiamente la differenza. La numero uno, però, è diversa dal rendering consegnato da Nauta Yachts. Il suo armatore, che arriva dall'europa dell'est, ha infatti preferito un design meno mediterraneo e anziché optare per quello dello studio milanese, ha affidato il décor e l'organizzazione degli interni ai designer tedeschi di Egg and Dart. Pur essendo stata realizzata seguendo le geometrie interne disegnate da Nauta Yachts, il risultato è una barca più classica e forse meno solare di quella disegnata dallo studio milanese, ma sicuramente più consona a un armatore che vive a latidudini maggiori. 76
