Course Title : Italian language and culture through music Course Number: ITL 351 Pre/Co-Requisites: ITL 202 or equivalent or placement examination. Credits & hours: 3 Course description: This course is an exploration and analysis of contemporary Italian music with a dual objective: students improve their Italian grammar and conversational skills at the advanced level while also acquiring knowledge of various aspects of contemporary Italian society. This course is designed to develop competency especially in listening and speaking skills and expand vocabulary acquisition. By listening to and discussing Italian songs, students will analyze idiomatic expressions, lexicon and grammatical structures as well as aspects of Italian culture, such as Italian families and the mafia in Italy, in order to gain linguistic and cultural competence. Conducted in Italian. Course Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Identify and discuss aspects of Italian society and culture in written and spoken Italian at an advanced level 2. Utilize grammatical and syntactical structures of the Italian language at the advanced level 3. Utilize an increased range of vocabulary items 4. Read short texts in Italian providing information about films 5. Demonstrate advanced level oral and written skills in Italian Course Learning Activities:

2 Listening skill (CLO 1, 2, 3) The student will listen to contemporary Italian songs in class (at least one per class) and for homework. Students will complete a range of in-class listening comprehensions activities to determine their textual and cultural understanding of the songs. Speaking skill (CLO 1-3, 5) The student will participate in class discussions relating to specific aspects of the song or topics from the songs relating to their lives and to Italian society and culture Speaking exercises will include: conversations, monologues and role-playing. Reading skill (CLO 1-4) Students will read texts in Italian that discuss the main themes of the songs. Students will read and analzye the texts of the songs and respond to questions designed to determine comprehension. Writing skill (CLO 1-5) Students will write compositions in Italian to express their opinion on the topics presented in the songs. In-class writing exercises include: summary, descriptions and critical analysis. 7 In keeping with AUR s mission to prepare students to live and work across cultures, the University places a high value on classroom experience. As a result attendance is expected in all classes and attendance records are maintained. The University s attendance policy is as follows: Minimum Attendance Requirement Students must attend a minimum of 70% of a course in order to be eligible to be considered for a passing grade. Absences Students will not be penalized for one absence from classes meeting once a week; Students will not be penalized for three absences from classes meeting twice a week; Students will not be penalized for four absences from classes meeting more than twice a week, as in the case of some intensive courses. If further absences are recorded, grade penalties will be applied according to the instructor s specific attendance policy, as stated in the syllabus. If the instructor does not specify an attendance policy, there will be no grade penalty other than that attached to the minimum attendance requirement. Cases of prolonged absences caused by an emergency or a medical condition may require students to withdraw from some or all of their courses. Under such circumstances students should first consult their academic advisors. N.B. The Professor may include a specific policy for this class. Please see the current AUR catalog.
