6 THE CLUSTERS: AN INNOVATIVE MODEL OF PARTICIPATION Expo Milano 2015 has been conceptualized with the ambition to bring the evolution of Universal Exhibitions one step further: an Expo where every program and project is developed putting the visitor experience at the center of the stage, and where the Theme is perceivable in every element of the Exposition, experienced from the very first step inside the site and in every interaction. This radical change of paradigm is particularly evident in the Cluster project. Traditionally the Countries unwilling or unable to participate in the Expositions building their own pavilion were grouped by the organizers under common structures, the joint pavilions, where the single Countries maintained inside an individual space to showcase themselves. Moreover the criteria for grouping Countries under the same joint pavilion have so far been geographical. Continental joint pavilions for Africa, Asia and South America were put in place, or others for significant regional territories and identities. However the idea behind Expo Milano 2015 is to address the theme in every element and in every project. Why not grouping Countries on a thematic basis, rather than geographical, then? Expo Milano 2015 has developed a participation model that allows Countries to select the solution that best suits their needs and projects. While maintaining the successful key elements of the tradition of Universal Expos, allowing many Countries to participate TITOLO PROGETTO

7 with their own sensibility and contribution, Expo Milano 2015 will introduce a significant innovation to the type of exhibition spaces and their placement. Countries will not be grouped according to a geographic principle but according to elements of the Expo theme Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life. Working together with the Organizer in developing a common thematic exhibition area, Countries will also retain their identity by creating their own unique exhibition space. Furthermore this solution will allow Countries from different regions and continents to collaborate together, overcoming the traditional geographical divisions of the Exhibition Areas of Expos and therefore enhancing the Universal character of Expo Milano The Clusters area will be located across the whole site, enhancing the potential dialogue with other elements like thematic areas and other Countries autonomous pavilions. Corporate organizations, local authorities, international organizations and civil society can all offer their contribution in terms of events, exhibitions, funding and supporting, catering and commercial activities. Local authorities are already collaborating in the Clusters development with their interest in developing offsite touristic itineraries in the territories that have a strong connection with the theme of the Cluster. Also the private sector will be asked to come on board and support the development of Cluster project, both financially, as well as in terms of content. Lastly International organisations are being involved by participating in the Clusters development and by contributing to the thematic elaboration, offering scientific contributions and contents. 10 GENERAL INTRODUCTION The peculiarity of Sea and Islands is that there is not a single nutrition theme (cocoa, coffee...) that would connect the pavilions and neither did the group know the amount or, even with certainty, the names of the participating countries at the moment of the workshop. Our information was that all islands would be located between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, exotic and of small dimensions. Having a more general theme for the exhibition meant that the ideas and concepts had to be discussed thoroughly. This discussion started with collecting materials (data and images) from the possible participating countries. Rather than the qualities or features of some individual island groups, students found the possibilities of living on an island in general as the starting point for their work. This way, three different concepts were created answering the general theme of the expo Feeding the planet - from the point of view of an islander and the life surrounded by salt water, perhaps rather isolated from the rest of the surrounding world. The themes were:»» Strengthening the community, showing the possibilities of cultures of the islands; music, dances, rituals, stories and natural materials knowledge. This theme later had an architectural form in rhythms of discovery.»» Living with the Ocean, understanding the meaning of the long and difficult distances between the islands, living by fishing and collecting the nutrition from the sea. This concept later condensed into A net to connect.»» Building a self-sufficient society, emphasizing the possibilities of collecting energy, water and nutrition for the community as a means of survival. The group named its work Eco wave.»» It was clear from the beginning that the workshop should create a suitable space in seven exhibition elements for about participant countries. This meant that the units could be combined into larger groups, optimizing the common structures such as stairs and elevators.»» The groups have looked to a common cognitive horizon holding together the architecture and nature of different cultures and expressing a strong ecological approach through sustainable material choices and orientation of the seven pavilions according to the sun movement, rainfall data and the expected flow of the visitors of Expo2015. 11 La peculiarità del cluster SEA and ISLANDS risiede nel fatto che esso non affronta un singolo tema nutrizionale (così come negli altri cluster) capace di connettere i padiglioni espositivi. A questa unicità si aggiunge il fatto che ad oggi - non si conosce con esattezza il numero delle isole che parteciperanno a EXPO2015. L unica informazione certa è che le isole partecipanti si trovano comprese fra i Tropici del Cancro e del Capricorno, esotiche e di piccole dimensioni. Avere un tema molto generale ci ha portato a discutere in modo approfondito sia idee che concetti. Inizialmente il cluster ha collezionato materiali (dati e immagini) delle nazioni candidate a partecipare. Invece che le qualità e identità specifiche di alcune isole in particolare gli studenti hanno esplorato il concetto inerente a cosa significhi vivere su un isola. In questo modo sono stati creati tre concetti differenti capaci di rispondere al tema generale di expo feeding the planet - attraverso il possibile punto di vista di un isolano che vive circondato da acqua salata e isolato dal resto del mondo. Sono stati elaborati i seguenti concetti:»» Strengthening the community che mostra le possibilità delle culture isolane attraverso le loro musiche, danze, rituali, storie e comprensione dei materiali naturali. Il concetto e stato tradotto in forma architettonica in quello che è diventato Rhythms of discovery.»» Living with the Ocean guarda al significato della distanza e alla difficoltà di coprirla, al vivere di pesca e di mare. Questo concetto è stato tradotto architettonicamente in A net to connect.»» Building a self-sufficient society enfatizza le possibilità di accumulare energia, acqua e conoscenza per la comunità come mezzo di sopravvivenza. Il gruppo ha tradotto questo tema in un progetto chiamato Eco-wave.»» Fin dall inizio del workshop è stato creato uno spazio capace di aggregare differenti nazioni in sette unità espositive. Ciò ha portato i vari gruppi a trovare un linguaggio architettonico capace di ottimizzare le strutture comuni quali ascensori e scale.»» I gruppi hanno guardato ad un orizzonte cognitivo comune tenendo insieme l architettura e la natura di diverse culture ed esprimendo una forte valenza ecologica nel progetto. Le forme dei padiglioni non sono arbitrarie in quanto considerano elementi ambientali oggettivi quali l orientamento solare, i dati pluviometrici e i flussi di visitatori previsti per Expo2015. 14 The concept of Self Sufficiency characterizes the islands. The disposition recalls the idea of the village: protection and spaces for the common activities and exhibitions. Therefore, the whole cluster is designed to take advantage from the context. The shape is optimized for a PV system on the roof and the collection of the rainwater for internal use; the energy produced by visitors walking is collected by the pavement trough a piezoelectric floor system that converts kinetic energy into electricity. Il concept Self Sufficiency caratterizza le isole. La disposizione richiama l idea del villaggio: protezione e spazio per attività comuni ed esibizioni. Per questo l intero cluster è progettato per trarre vantaggio dal contesto. La forma è ottimizzata per il sistema PV sulla copertura e la raccolta dell acqua piovana; l energia prodotta dalla camminata dei visitatori e rilasciata sul pavimento è convertita in energia elettrica grazie ad uno speciale sistema piezoelettrico. 24 A Net To Connect keeps inspiration from the ancient nautics s maps used for the geographical position of the islands. The base grid became the architectonical key used for the definition of the masterplan s spaces and the facade of the pavilions. In that way, the design is added with bioclimatic strategies, to provide the shading and the protection of the people. A Net To Connect trae ispirazione dalle antiche mappe nautiche utilizzate per la definizione geografica delle isole. La maglia di base è stata reinterpretata in chiave architettonica per la definizione degli spazi a terra e del rivestimento di facciata dei padiglioni. In questo senso il design architettonico assume una connotazione bioclimatica, con la realizzazione di estrusioni e curvature per provvedere alla schermatura e alla protezione dei fruitori dello spazio espositivo. 34 Rhythm of discovery is a journey through which people are involved in experiencing islands through senses. The idea is feeding the soul. It is explored and materialized through the sounds exploiting nature s potential, and by involving the visitors in an intriguing experience with the landscape. Floating objects, sounds, shadow and light seduce visitors into a path of exploring, immersing them in an exotic dimension. The journey is about discovering bamboo forest, celebration of the fountain, and the big drum. Il ritmo della scoperta è un percorso che invita i visitatori ad esplorare le culture delle isole attraverso i sensi. Elementi fluttuanti, suoni, ombre e luci accompagnano l avventore lungo il suo cammino, che si snoda attraverso una fitta foresta di bambù. Lo scroscio dell acqua, lo scricchiolio della ghiaia, il battere sul legno e sui tamburi guidano i visitatori dall ingresso sino alla grande area terminale, dove entrano in stretto contatto con le diverse tradizioni locali. 35 Rhythm of discovery is a journey through senses, inviting people to explore islands cultures. These islands are places with a given potential in the landscape, so inhabitants take it to feed themselves. Thus, the idea of feeding the soul is explored and materialized in the process of producing sounds exploiting the nature s potential. This allows people to create a connection with the context, involving them in symbiosis with landscape. Floating shapes, sounds, shadows and light guide visitors through a path, made by island materials, immersing them in an exotic dimension. The journey is divided in trhee steps. First, the discovery and the trip to a landscape composed by bamboos forset, coming both from up and down that produce sounds; gradually the visitor is guided toward a focus point, represented by a fountain, gathering them as a community. From here, visitors will experience each pavilion. The last step is the events and relaxing area, giving them the chance to know islands cultures, enjoying the view of the canal. Il ritmo della scoperta è un percorso che invita i visitatori a scoprire le culture delle isole attraverso i sensi. Queste, per definizione, sono luoghi con un potenziale insito, dal quale gli abitanti attingono per nutrirsi. Da qui l idea di nutrire l anima, che si materializza in un processo di creazione di suoni sfruttando la natura. Ciò permette alle persone di stabilire un profondo legame con il contesto, coinvolgendole in un esperienza simbiotica con il paesaggio. Elementi fluttuanti, suoni, ombre e luci accompagnano il visitatore lungo un cammino caratterizzato dai materiali tipici dei luoghi raccontati. Il percorso è articolato in tre momenti. Dall ingresso alla foresta di bambù si giunge ad un punto focale rappresentato da una vasca d acqua, dove si riuniscono i visitatori come in una comunità. Da qui è possibile raggiungere tutti i padiglioni. Infine si giunge all area relax-eventi, dove è possibile entrare in stretto contatto con le diverse tradizioni locali, godendo intanto della vista del canale.
