1 Dear IS Modena families, Newsletter n 9 - November We hope you had a wonderful half-term break and are ready for this exciting and busy second half term. It was lovely to see the students this morning walk in the door with smiles on their faces happy to be back in school! Our warmest welcome to our new PE teacher, Mr. Pascal Groppi, who joins IS Modena today. Mr. Groppi has relocated from the UK over half term and is eager to join our team of educators and meet our students. Halloween Parties Thank you Student Council, PTA, volunteer moms & dads and staff for actively contributing in making our Halloween Parties 2015 a fun afternoon and evening for all our students. Congratulations to Grade 3 students for winning the classroom door decoration contest. Well done! English beginners class for adults with Mr. Kay Trial lesson confirmed today, November 2 nd from 13:45 to 14:45. Please register in the school office. Parent/Teacher conferences PYP Parent/Teacher conferences (KDG to Grade 6) take place this week. The appointment schedule has been mailed last week. Please make sure you check your time slot and promptly inform our office of any problem. NO Chess Club on Tuesday afternoon (anticipated to this afternoon) and NO PROPS Club nor Good Afternoon Club on Thursday afternoon. For the PYP Parent/Teacher conferences on Tuesday, November 3 rd and Thursday, November 5 th we will offer a fee-based child care service to help families during this important consultation event. Please contact the office if you need to confirm child care. Reminder from the Student/Parent Handbook Physical Education Kit: Students wear shorts/track suit bottoms, a white school T-shirt and gym shoes (both indoor/outdoor shoes are required) during PE lessons. Older students from Grade 5 should also bring a towel and toiletries for showering. Kindergarten and Transition students are encouraged to wear their PE kit to school on the days they have PE lessons. All earrings, including studs, must be removed for PE lessons. All jewellery must be removed for PE (including watches, earrings, rings, bracelets, necklaces, anklets). Don t miss out on this week s new edition of the MYP Newsletter. 2 Newsletter n 9 - November Gent.me Famiglie IS Modena, Ci auguriamo abbiate trascorso una bellissima vacanza di metà trimestre e siate pronti per questa intensa e stimolante seconda metà trimestre. E stato davvero bello vedere gli studenti entrare a scuola sorridenti e felici di essere di nuovo qui! Diamo un caloroso benvenuto al nostro nuovo insegnante di Educazione fisica, Mr. Pascal Groppi, che ha iniziato oggi. Mr. Groppi si è trasferito dal Regno Unito durante le vacanze e non vede l ora di unirsi al nostro team di educatori ed incontrare gli studenti. Party di Halloween Ringraziamo il consiglio studentesco, il PTA, le mamme e i papà volontari e il nostro staff per aver contribuito attivamente a far sì che le nostre feste di Halloween 2015 fossero un momento di vero divertimento per tutti i nostri studenti. Congratulazioni agli studenti di Grade 3 per aver vinto la gara di decorazione della classe. Bravi! Corso di inglese per adulti liv. Principianti con Mr. Kay Oggi 2 novembre è confermata la lezione di prova dalle 13:45 alle 14:45. vi preghiamo di prenotarvi presso la segreteria. Colloqui genitori/insegnanti I colloqui genitori/insegnanti PYP (da KDG a Grade 6) si svolgeranno questa settimana. Abbiamo inviato la lista degli appuntamenti la scorsa settimana. Vi preghiamo di controllare i vs appuntamenti e informare per tempo la segreteria nel caso vi fossero problemi. Martedì pomeriggio niente club di scacchi anticipato ad oggi. Giovedì pomeriggio nessun club dopo scuola. Durante i colloqui di martedì e giovedì offriremo un servizio di sorveglianza a pagamento per i bambini così da agevolare i genitori in occasione di un evento così importante. Vi invitiamo a contattare la segreteria per prenotare questo servizio. Promemoria dal Manuale Studente/Genitore: Kit Educazione Fisica: gli studenti indossano pantaloncini/pantaloni da ginnastica, la maglietta bianca della scuola e scarpe da ginnastica (da interno o da esterno come richiesto) nel corso della lezione di ginnastica. Gli studenti più grandi a partire da Grades 5 dovrebbero anche portare un asciugamano e articoli per l igiene personale per fare la doccia. Gli studenti di Kindergarten e Transition sono incoraggiati ad indossare subito il kit da ginnastica nei giorni in cui hanno educazione fisica. Tutti gli orecchini, inclusi quelli non pendenti, devono essere rimossi per la lezione di PE. Tutta la gioielleria deve essere rimossa per educazione fisica (inclusi gli orologi, orecchini, anelli, braccialetti, collane e cavigliere). 3 Dr.ssa Giovanna Fungi Who is Dr.ssa Giovanna Fungi? Clinical Psychologist and Psychotherapist, she graduated in 2003 at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Milan with an experimental work on Panic Disorder treatment within the European VePsy Project (Virtual Environments for Clinical Psychology). Her internship in Clinical Psychology was completed at CBM Milano, Centro per il Bambino Maltrattato e la famiglia in crisi, tutored by dott. Stefano Cirillo and Dott.ssa Paola Covini. Dr.ssa Fungi completed a four-years specialisation program at the Post Graduate School of Specialisation in Transcultural Psychotherapy, Fondazione Cecchini-Pace, Milan. Her internship in Transcultural Psychotherapy was completed at the NHS Psychiatric service CPS 11, A.O. Niguarda Ca Granda, Department of Etnopsychiatry. Dr. ssa Fungi collaborates as School Psychologist with Italian public schools and she has been collaborating since 2008 with ISE, International School of Milan, Monza and Modena, working as Consultant School Psychologist and counsellor. Dr.ssa Fungi offers professional and personal development seminars, as well as educational workshops aimed at various groups with targeted topics. Dr.ssa Fungi has worked as Professor of Transcultural Psychology at IES Abroad, Institute for the International Education of Students (IES c/o Università Cattolica di Milano) with her colleague Prof. Zaiontz. Dr.ssa Fungi works as psychotherapist in Milan and has experience as a culture broker. She participates in international Congresses and develops research projects with the aim of contributing to the development of effective approaches in clinical psychology and education. She has a Masters degree in Cognitive Behavioural and Acceptance and Commitment therapies for children and teenagers and is member of ACBS (Association for Contextual Behavioural Science) and ACT for Kids and Teens. Chi è la Dr.ssa Giovanna Fungi? Psicologa e psicoterapeuta, si è laureata nel 2003 all Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore di Milano con una tesi sperimentale sul Trattamento dei Disturbi da Panico all interno del progetto europeo VePsy (Virtual Environments for Clinical Psychology). Il suo tirocinio in Psicologia Clinica è stato completato presso il Centro per il Bambino Maltrattato e la Famiglia in crisi a Milano, con il dott. Stefano Cirillo e la Dr.ssa Paola Covini. Lavora come psicoterapeuta a Milano ed ha esperienza come mediatrice culturale. 4 Dr.ssa Fungi parent workshops November 9 & 30 SEXUALITY EDUCATION 2.0: INVOLVING PARENTS IN THE PROCESS During the process of growing-up, children and adolescents gradually acquire knowledge and develop images, values, attitudes and skills related to the human body, intimate relationships and sexuality. For this, they use a wide variety of learning sources. The WHO Regional Office for Europe states the importance of both informal and formal sexuality education for youth. Sexuality education is defined as learning about the cognitive, emotional, social, interactive and physical aspects of sexuality [ ] It enables them to make choices which enhance the quality of their lives and contribute to a compassionate and just society. The School has decided to offer students some activities to reflect on emotions, relationships and sexuality, as they are experienced in the contemporary context. The project addresses students from Grade 6 up to Grade 12 in different, age appropriate ways, starting from exploring the topic of puberty and body changes in G6, body image and social networks in G7, and relationships and sexuality from G8 to G12. Within this context, school offers a workshop for parents led by the school consultant psychologist. The goal is to foster a shared reflection, a constructive space where we can develop a common language going through the topic from the perspective of parents in nowadays society. A REFLECTION AROUND CHANGE AND TRANSITIONS FOR PARENTS AND STUDENTS Change is an experience we all go through several times in our lives. It is fascinating, exciting, wanted or unwanted, hardly tolerated, irritating. It is scary even when it s wanted, and it requires all of our most sophisticated psychological resources to cope. Transitioning is about moving to new places, but also moving through phases in life and psychological flexibility helps to experience change in a rich and meaningful way, in order for individuals, couples, families to take the most out of it. In the contemporary world in which change frequently occurs inside of us and around us, IS Modena wants to offer parents an opportunity to reflect on transitions, adjustment and coping skills based on recent research and experience in the field of psychology and education. 5 Dr.ssa Fungi parent workshops November 9 & 30 EDUCAZIONE SESSUALE 2.0: COINVOLGERE I GENITORI NEL PROCESSO Durante le fasi di crescita, bambini e adolescenti gradualmente acquisiscono conoscenze e sviluppano immagini, valori, atteggiamenti e abilità collegate al corpo umano, alle relazioni intime e alla sessualità. Per farlo, usano una vasta gamma di fonti di apprendimento. L Ufficio Regionale Europeo dell OMS afferma l importanza dell educazione sessuale sia formale, sia informale per i giovani. L educazione alla sessualità viene definita come L apprendimento degli aspetti cognitivi, emotivi, sociali, interattivi e fisici della sessualità [ ] Consente loro di fare scelte che migliorino la qualità della loro vita e contribuiscano ad una società giusta e comprensiva. La scuola ha deciso di offrire agli studenti alcune attività per riflettere sulle emozioni, le relazioni e la sessualità per come vengono vissute nel contesto contemporaneo. Il progetto è rivolto agli studenti da Grade 6 fino a Grade 12 e si differenzia a seconda della fascia d età, affrontando l esplorazione del tema della pubertà e dei cambiamenti del corpo in G6, l immagine del corpo e i social networks in G7, e le relazioni e la sessualità da G8 a G12. All interno di questo contesto, la scuola offre un workshop per genitori condotto dalla nostra Consulente Psicologa Scolastica. Scopo di questa attività è stimolare una rigflessione condivisa, uno spazio costruttivo in cui poter sviluppare un linguaggio comune nell affrontare l argomento dalla prospettiva dei genitori nella società odierna. UNA RIFLESSIONE SUL CAMBIAMENTO E LE FASI TRANSITORIE PER STUDENTI E GENITORI Il cambiamento è un esperienza che tutti ci troviamo ad affrontare diverse volte nella vita. È affascinante, eccitante, voluto o non voluto, scarsamente tollerato, irritante. Può fare paura anche se è voluto e per affrontarlo dobbiamo fare ricorso alle nostre risorse psicologiche più sofisticate. La transizione può riguardare il trasferimento in un nuovo posto, ma anche il passaggio attraverso diverse fasi nella vita; la flessibilità psicologica aiuta ad affrontare il cambiamento in modo ricco e significativo, consentendo a individui, coppie e famiglie di trarne il massimo vantaggio. Nel mondo contemporaneo, nel quale il cambiamento avviene di frequente sia dentro che intorno a noi, la IS Modena vuole offrire ai genitori l opportunità di riflettere sulle transizioni, gli adattamenti e sulle abilità di farvi fronte traendo spunto da ricerche recenti ed esperienze maturate in campo psicologico ed educativo. 8 IMPORTANT INFORMATION Bus Service Bus routes are determined by the bus company who try to provide the most efficient route possible. Please be aware that your child can be on the bus for up to 1 hour each trip. As part of improving overall safety and efficiency a number of rules for the bus have been developed: Students should be ready for the bus a couple of minutes before their assigned pick-up time. Ensure shoes are clean. Parents are responsible for ensuring their child is on the bus in the morning. Parents must advise the bus company if their child is not taking the bus. The school is responsible for ensuring students get on the bus at the end of the school day. Please note that buses may leave from school any time from 15:15 to 15:20 in the afternoon. The school requires a note or from parents before 14:00 if they are intending to collect their child from school and transport is not required. Without notification students will be put on the bus. Students are not allowed to change bus routes for any reason. If there is an emergency, then the School Manager should be contacted and alternative arrangements will be made. Changes in the bus schedules may take place to accommodate new students. We hope you appreciate the bus company try their best to keep these to a minimum. Students must remain seated with their seatbelts fastened at all times while on the bus. Respectful behaviour on the buses is expected from all students. Should a child repeatedly misbehave on the bus, then the bus company and the school might agree to have the bus service suspended for that child for a couple of days. Security The safety and security of your children is extremely important to us. All parents, visitors, suppliers must sign in at the office when entering the school building and sign out when leaving. We ask all parents to use the outer parking lot and enter through the small gate. Please help us in ensuring that the small gate is closed at all times. The school has an evacuation procedure which will be used in the case of either fire or other security alert. Regular fire and earthquake drills take place throughout the school year. Celebrating student birthdays in school We welcome the celebration of birthdays in our school however, there are a few guidelines that need to be observed: a) We will admit into school grounds only nut free birthday cakes or pastries and they will have to be purchased goods and not homemade. b) You will have to inform the school office at least 3 days prior to the date you wish to bring the cake to school. Written communication via mail is preferable. c) To avoid disruption in class, students will be allowed to bring cakes and pastries onto school grounds ONLY on birthday occasions. Please refrain from giving your child/children any cakes/tarts/pies and pastries to be shared with classmates. The well being of our students is our upmost priority and due to the presence of various allergies in our community, students are not allowed to share food. OUR SCHOOL IMPLEMENTS A STRICT NUT-FREE POLICY No food containing any type of nuts or nut traces is allowed in the school building at any time. Please note: Nutella does contain nuts. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping everyone in our school healthy and safe. For more information about anaphylaxis and nut allergies: Snacks/Drinks: Please note that students may bring healthy snacks or fruit to enjoy during their breaks. Sweets, crisps and high sugar drinks (Coke, Sprite, Ice-Tea) are not allowed. No gum is permitted anywhere in the building or on the school grounds. Early Years students bring only fruit.

9 INFORMAZIONI IMPORTANTI Servizio bus I giri delle navette sono definiti dalla ditta del trasporto bus che cerca di fornire il percorso più efficiente possibile. Siate consapevoli che Vostro figlio può dover restare sul bus fino ad un ora per ogni viaggio. Nel tentativo di migliorare la sicurezza e l efficienza, sono state sviluppate alcune regole per l uso del bus: Gli studenti devono essere pronti per il bus un paio di minuti prima dell orario di raccolta a loro assegnato. Assicurarsi che le scarpe siano pulite. I genitori hanno la responsabilità di garantire che i figli prendano il pulmino al mattino. I Genitori devono informare la ditta del bus se il loro figlio non prenderà il bus. La scuola ha la responsabilità di assicurarsi che gli studenti salgano sul pulmino alla fine della giornata scolastica. I pulmini possono partire dalla scuola in qualsiasi momento tra le 15:15 e le 15:20. La scuola richiede un messaggio o una mail da parte dei genitori entro le 14:00 se intendono venire a prendere i bambini a scuola e se non richiedono il servizio. Salvo diversa comunicazione, i bambini saranno messi sul pulmino. Agli studenti non è permesso cambiare pulmino per alcun motivo. In caso di emergenza, allora deve essere contattata la School Manager e saranno apportate modifiche. Cambiamenti nell orario del bus possono essere fatti per accogliere nuovi studenti. Speriamo apprezziate lo sforzo della ditta del bus nel contenere i cambiamenti. Gli studenti devono restare seduti con le cinture allacciate per tutto il tempo che sono sul bus. Gli studenti devono avere un comportamento educato sul bus. Se uno studente dovesse ripetutamente comportarsi male sul bus, la ditta del trasporto e la scuola potrebbero concordare di sospendere il servizio bus per quel bambino per un paio di giorni. Sicurezza La sicurezza e l incolumità dei nostri bambini è estremamente importante. Tutti i genitori e i visitatori devono registrarsi in segreteria quando entrano a scuola e devono segnare l uscita quando escono. Chiediamo a tutti i genitori di usare il parcheggio esterno e di entrare dal cancellino. Vi chiediamo di assicurarvi che il cancellino sia sempre chiuso. La scuola ha una propria procedura di evacuazione in caso di incendio o di altro allarme di sicurezza. Prove di evacuazione anti-incendio o anti-sismiche vengono condotte regolarmente nel corso dell anno scolastico. Celebrare il compleanno degli studenti a scuola I festeggiamenti dei compleanni sono benaccetti nella nostra scuola, tuttavia ci sono alcune linee guida da seguire: a) Possiamo accettare a scuola solo torte o dolci senza frutta a guscio e devono essere acquistati e non fatti in casa. b) Dovrete informare la segreteria almeno 3 giorni prima della data in cui intendete portare la torta a scuola. Una comunicazione scritta è preferibile. c) Per evitare interruzioni nelle lezioni, agli studenti è permesso portare a scuola torte e dolci SOLO in occasione di compleanni. Vi invitiamo ad evitare di dare a vostro figlio torte/crostate/dolci da condividere con i compagni di classe. Il benessere dei nostri studenti è la nostra priorità assoluta e vista la presenza di varie allergie nella nostra comunità, agli studenti non è permesso condividere cibo. NELLA NOSTRA SCUOLA E IN VIGORE UN RIGOROSO DIVIETO DI CONSUMO DI FRUTTA A GUSCIO Nessun alimento contenente frutta a guscio o tracce di frutta a guscio è ammesso nell edificio scolastico in qualsiasi momento. NB: la Nutella contiene frutta a guscio. Ringraziamo per la cooperazione nel mantenere un ambiente sano e sicuro per tutti. Per maggiori informazioni sull anafilassi e l allergia alla frutta a guscio: Merende/bevande: si prega di notare che gli studenti possono portare merende sane o frutta da gustare durante le ricreazioni. Caramelle, patatine e bevande gassate (Cola, Sprite e Té Freddo) non sono consentiti. Non è permesso consumare gomme da masticare all interno e all esterno della scuola. 11 REMINDERS PLEASE ENSURE ALL ITEMS ARE LABELLED WITH YOUR CHILD S NAME Except for the very young children, we expect the students to keep track of their own belongings. Please discuss this with them. If your child arrives home with clothing or something else that belongs to another student, please return it to school the next day. A lost property (Lost & Found Box) is located temporarily in the Medical Room, feel free to check it for missing items and please keep it tidy. PARKING AREA All parents must use the public parking area outside the school gate at all times. Please remember to lock your cars and please make sure you don t leave any personal belongings in the car. Internal parking area is reserved for staff only and the bus service. PARCHEGGIO ESTERNO Tutti i genitori devono utilizzare sempre il parcheggio all esterno del cancello. Ricordatevi di chiudere le portiere dell auto e non lasciate borse e borsette in macchina.
