1 Alessandra Maria Roberta Santona Curriculum vitae Born in Bosa (NU) on , Italy ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS AND PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS Achieved Degree in Psychology on the 4 th of July 1996 at the University of Rome Sapienza, with a thesis entitled Tutela pubblica e privata del minore (analisi dei casi nell ultimo decennio nella Pretura di Roma) (Public and private protection of the minor, analyses of the cases of the last ten years in the District court in Rome), evaluation 110/110. In 1996/97 attended a Specialization Course in Psychology and Juvenile Jurisdiction at the University of Rome Sapienza, held at the Psychology Faculty. In 1997 held the State Exam achieving the Authorization to be a psychologist. On 8 th of July 1999 was enrolled in the Professional Register of Psychologists of Rome. From 2003 was enrolled in the Italian Association of Psychology, Clinical Psychology Section. In 2005 achieved the Specialization in Familiar Psychotherapy at the Academy of Family Psychotherapy directed by Professor M. Andolfi, evaluation 60/60 with honors. In 2005 won Best Poster price ( Romantic Attachment and Couple s Adjustment ) at the VI National Congress of Italian Association of Psychology, Clinical Psychology Section, September, Cagliari. 6 CLINICAL AND PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES From 1998 onwards works with the Italian Center for Child Care, as a psychologist counsellor. In particular, held training courses for aspirant adoptive parents, interviews with parents to verify the concrete chances of adoptions and post-adoption support for families. From 2005 onwards is a member of the psychotherapeutic team of the Center for the Couples, at the Academy of Family Onlus, Roma. From 2011 onwards is a member of the Scientific Committee of the Italian Center for Child Care- Development, which promotes studies and research activities in the field of the international adoption, Milan. From 2004 to 2008 is a member of the psychotherapeutic team of the Center for the Adoption and Family Fostering, at the Academy of Family Onlus, Roma. From 2001 to 2005 is a member of the Committee of the Regional Coordination of the Integrated Services for the National and International Adoptions of Lazio. RESEARCH ACTIVITIES Main themes and research collaborations: ATTACHMENT Adult attachment: the attachment theory has deeply influenced the research and the traditional view of the developmental psychopathology, giving more attention to interpersonal functioning on the study of the individual mind. This perspective has predominantly turned the attention to the dyadic relationship of the caregiver and the child and has enlarged the field of observations and interventions, to understand the relationship between peers and partners. In the last ten years, evidently, the study of couple s relationships has become a fruitful and productive area for researchers of the framework of the attachment theory. Among them Judith Crowell and her collaborators has worked for almost ten years on a research, the Stony Brook Adult Relationship Project, which is one of the largest research projects on the longitudinal relationships between adult partners. According to this research area, the theoretical and empirical research, which biased the work of professor Santona, has its base on the idea that the attachment model, that is the result of childhood early experiences, is not an exclusive and dominant factor in the choice of partners and that the quality of intimate relationships, influences the co-construction of the representation of the romantic attachment. In this context the Current Relationship Interview (CRI) - semi-structured interview which assesses the representation of the attachment in the adult s sentimental relations (Crowell & Owens, 1996) proved to be a relevant tool to assess the influence of the attachment behavior and the representation of the partner on the attachment model of the interviewee. Because of the huge interest that the study of the couple s relationships has in the field of the attachment, the CRI has come to be used in longitudinal and adult attachment researches. A study by Professor Santona, in line with the research of Crowell and collaborators for the Stony Brook Attachment Relationships Project, has assumed the assessment of partners of stable couples as focus, both in childhood experiences (generalized) and in sentimental relations (specific), in order 6

7 to explore the process through which the representations of a new attachment relation integrates in the existing representations. She had the opportunity to assess the results of this study, comparing them with Crowell s main research and with other ones. She decided to continue her research, focalizing the attention, mainly on the matching between the attachment models of the two partners, as an expression of a possible adjustment of the dyadic nature of the relationships. Adjustment: in the area of application of the attachment theory to the study of the couple s relationships, many efforts have been made to comprehend the relation between adult representations of relationship and the quality of partners relationship, known as adjustment process. In her research she has explored the relation between this two constructs and with other studies she has shown the correlation between the two aspects, underlying a relationship, both when the adult attachment has been studied in relation to the individual adjustment of each partner and when it has been studied in dyadic terms. (see interventions and congress 3). Clinical evaluations: an increasing number of attempts has been made to extend the results of attachment to the clinical intervention, that has led to adjust the techniques created in the context of the attachment theory inside the assessment in the clinical area. PARENTING Following this line of research Professor Santona carried out a clinical assessing work on partners attachment relationships, believing that the same condition that can t favour the creation of a secure base context. She used the Current Relationship Interview (CRI) with the aim to consider the state of individual mind related to the sentimental relation and the matching of the two partners of the couple as an expression to be in the world, that reflects the basic strategies on which people has organized. Many researches has shown that both family experiences in childhood and the way of understanding the couples relationship, could influence the motivation, when becoming a parent and the possibility to assume the parenting role. The maturation of the caring competences, develops in individuals since the first contacts with the primary caregiver. Having received the proper care during childhood is a first significant set of skills that can be used in the relationships with the peers, especially in the adolescence and the youngadulthood. This is the period when the person creates relationships with peers and with partners, testing relationships models more symmetric than the ones experienced with parents that simultaneously tend to be more equal. The young person once has become an adult, supported from the partner, can assume a parenting role, that is to give care to the children more than asking. This modality of reciprocal care that characterize the couple s relationship, at the same time, can be considered a precursor of the transition to parenthood. This transition to parenthood, from caretaker to caregiver, can be hampered by various factors. Deficient care, or on the contrary an excessive emphasis on the care of the child by the parent do not allow the child to create a secure base on care competences in which they can rely on during the process of becoming independent from the family. In this context the actual researches reveal that not only the impact of social and economic factors is significant, but also the psychological ones are crucial for the choice not to have children, subsequently contributing to create a cultural model that goes away from generativity. Professor Santona has been part of a research group, coordinated by professor Carli, that has the identification of the psychological factors that motivate the choice of not having children as goal, in 7

8 ADOPTION order to study the phenomenon and promote interventions for the support of the generativity both in a perspective of prevention during the young adult phase and in a perspective of couples and family enrichment. The adoption has been an object of a wide attention from psychologists and researchers in the last ten years. A relevant attention has been dedicated to the assessment of couples who choose adoption, with the aim to assess the psychological and social context in which the children should be in. A particular attention has been given to the theme of the couple s dynamics and to the problems of the parenthood, using the intersubjectivity perspective which consider the comparison between the models of the object relations and the attachment. In this direction, professor Santona made researches on the couple s attachment and on the quality of the sentimental relationships, on the dynamics and the couple s motivation linked to the choice to adopt. At the same time in the area of the social and law sciences became central the interest for the assessment of the ongoing process of adoption and the psychosocial features of the adopted individuals during their childhood. Unfortunately, in literature there is a lack of specific researches in this area: in Italian literature, there is, indeed, a low number of follow-up researches that study the quality of adoption and the assessment of the factors that contribute to the adoption success.
