2 Achille Alberti ETHZ Summary To reduce the use ofresources, the technology for the production of synthetic filament yarn has been analyzed. The production plants for filament yam use all over the world each year about 7500 own'. Even though, the energy consumption is in general not the first priority for the technological evolution ofthe production machinery. This paper presents a method to analyze the energy and resource consumption of the melt spinning plants. The analysis starts from the components of the production machine, where the power absorbed is transformed in heat, and, after been used for the process, is dissipated in the environment. Thereafter the attention is put on the whole manufacturing plant, considered as an assembly ofmanufacturing machines. At this level the problem is not correlated to the heat dissipation, but to the logistical and structural aspects of the plant organization. The manufacturing plant is indeed influenced by a large number of input parameters. The research of the impact of each manufacturing input parameter on the energy and resource consumption is done simulating the entire manufacturing plant. The most important aspect for the production plant is the maximization of the cash flow, which corresponds also with a minimization of the resource consumption. Therefore the economical aspects ofthe energy consumption have been analyzed by calculating the cash flow generated by the simulated manufacturing plant and by analyzing the net present value of several possible improvement project for the energy saving. The entire thesis can be summarized by the following items: Beat balance: a method to calculate the free and forced convection, the conduction, the radiation and the heat transported into and out ofthe manufacturing machine. Logistical and structural analysis using a time discrete computer simulation. 1 Considering a production of5,000,000,000 kg filament yam produced each year (Cf. CIRFS), and 1.5 kwh per kilogram.

4 Achille Alberti ETHZ Riassunto La tecnologia per la produzione di filamenti sintetici viene analizzata allo scopo di rirurre il consumo energetico e di risorse. Gli impianti di produizone per filamenti sintetici utilizzano in tutto il mondo 7500 own'. Malgrado cio, il consumo energetico non e in generale un aspetto prioritario per quanta riguarda I'evoluzione tecnologica delle macchine di produzione. Il presente studio presenta un metodo di analisi dei consumi energetici e di risorse per gli impianti di filatura ehe producono filamenti sintetici. L' analisi inizia dalle componenti delle macchine di produzione. Qui la potenza assorbita viene trasforrnata in calore ehe, dopo essere usato per il processo produttivo, viene dissipato nell'ambiente estemo. In seguito al centro dell'attenzione viene messo l'impianto di produzione completo, considerato come insieme di macchine di produzione. A questo livello il problema non e piu correlato con la dissipazione del calore, bensi con aspetti riguardanti la logistica, la struttura e l'organizzazione della fabbrica. La fabbrica viene infatti influenzata da un gran numero di pararnetri input. Per ricercare l'effetto di ogni singolo parametro input sul consumo di energia e di risorse, l'intero sistema di produzione viene simulato tramite un algoritmo discreto. L'aspetto principale considerato nella gestione dell'impiato di produzione riguarda la massimizzazione del cash flow, ehe corrisponde in generale con la minimizzazione del consumo di risorse. Gli aspetti economici correlati al consumo energetico vengono quindi analizzati dapprima calcolando il cash flow generato dall'impianto di produzione simulato, in seguito tramite un'analisi dei valore netto attuale (NPV) dei diversi progetti miranti al risparrnio energetico. 1 Considerando una produzione di 5'000'000'000 kg di filamento sintetico per anno (Cf. Analisi Iogistica e strutturale tramite una simulazione discreta computerizzata. Analisi di sensitivita e ottimizzazione dei valori input e output dell'impianto di produzione compieto. Simulazione dei cash flow generato dall'impianto, caicoiazione dei valore netto attuale (NPV).
