4 NEWS History Museum of Guanabacoa (Cuba) Known as the House of the Stewardess, valuable representation of the eclectic Cuban colonial architecture, the house was built in the mid 19th century and is located in the very heart of the Historic center of the Village of Asunción de Guanabacoa, east of Havana.The Museum was inaugurated on 26 July 1964 and treasures the most important and comprehensive ethnographic collection on the three major religious cults brought or developed by African slaves or their descendants in Cuba: the Regla de Ocha or Santería, the Regla de Palo or Palo-Monte and the Sociedad Secreta Abakuá )Abakuá Secret Society). Its cool colonial patio is the venue of frequent sessions of music and dance related to the Afro-Cuban religious rites, as well as other cultural and didactic activities on ethnography in which prestigious personalities in Cuban culture participate. It is located on one of the most important streets of the then Village of San Cristóbal de La Habana. On 6 January 1986 the Museum opened as Casa Museo de África (Museum of African Heritage) exhibiting a comprehensive ethnographic collection from the African continent which includes over two thousand pieces organized by topic: the slavery; objects and artifacts that belonged to Cuban scholar Don 4 FUUH s Newsletter -

As part of the scientific work, the Museum celebrates scientific events, as well as courses and workshops taught by outstanding scholars and researchers specialized in the African or Afro-Cuban topic. The most important event is the Scientific Workshop on Social and Cultural Afro-Cuban Anthropology Among Cubans, the 16th edition of which will take place on 5 to 9 January More information: #ini_12_ Cuban National Museum of the Slave Route The Cuban National Museum of The Slave Route is in the Fortress of San Severino, a unique four-bastion plant with a marked symmetry. This military construction is Renaissance style construction typical of the Spanish fortresses built in America during the 18th century. It is the oldest construction in the city of Matanzas, in the Western region of Cuba. The construction works began at the same time with the village, shortly alter the Foundation Documents were signed, on 13 October 1693, and concluded by 1734 thanks to the work of thousands of African slaves who were forced to build walls, cave tunnels, dig water cisterns and position the batteries of the fortress. A most remarkable and unique feature of the building is the marks, still visible, made by the slaves on the stone blocks, so as to facilitate counting and justify to their masters the work carried out every day. In 1978, the Fortress was declared National Monument of the Republic of Cuba and on 16 June 2009 the Cuban National Museum of the Slave Route was inaugurated. 7 Migrating Kitchen Exhibition at Te Pataka, Porirua (New Zealand) For many migrating families, traditional foods from home are a way to celebrate unique cultural identity and heritage: these are also a tasty reminder of home! The Migrating Kitchen Exhibition is on again at Te Pataka Museum in Porirua, in which people are invited to step inside the kitchens of immigrant communities who have made Aotearoa New Zealand their newest home. The first Migrating Kitchen Exhibition at Te Pataka was held in 2007 with families from Samoa, Burma, Greece, China, Russia and Somalia sharing their stories, recipes and foods. This year families from Afghanistan, Chile, the Cook Islands, India, Italy and Zimbabwe showcase their favourite foods. Presenting more than 30 highlights from the Barbier-Mueller s holdings of African and Oceanic sculpture, most never before displayed in the United States, this exhibition explores a rich legacy of connoisseurship. NY (USA) Through 20 September 2009 This exhibition highlights the amazing rediscovery of Silk Road treasures from Central Asia, thought to have been lost during decades of warfare and turmoil in Afghanistan. These masterpieces of the Kabul Museum collection remained hidden for twenty-five years, thanks to the heroism of the Kabul Museum s staff, who had secretly crated them and placed them in the vaults of the Central Bank in the presidential palace. It was only in 2004 that the crates were opened to reveal that these works had survived intact. Quai Branly Museum, Paris (France) 6 October 2009 to 24 January 2010 Mexico has a strategic geographic situation, as it happens with the Italian boot crossing the Mediterranean, compulsory crossroad between cultures. Museum of the Quai Branly, Paris (France) 6 October 2009 to 24 January 2010 As a tribute to the Curator, Archaeologist Felipe Solis Olguin, Director of the National Museum of Anthropology of Mexico, who died on 23 April The Museum of Quai Branly presents, for the first time in Europe, the mythical and mysterious civilization of Teotihuacan, with an exhibition gathering around 450 exceptional pieces, some of which have never been seen even in Mexico. Great city of the old Mexico founded during the first century before Christ, Teotihuacan had an incomparable cultural and artistic vitality until the 7th century. When the Aztecs discovered it abandoned they called it where men became Gods, impressed by its amplitude and its beauty. Paintings from the TWMA collection have been selected for their accessibility in terms of colour, composition and technique for the 5 to 10 age group with the aim of encouraging children to express how they feel about the art work. This is an opportunity for the children to gain an understanding of the meaning of terms such as colour, line, shape, pattern, balance, contrast, rhythm and symmetry. To some the world of contemporary art can be difficult to comprehend. Child Like will answer some basic questions and assist the viewer, both young and old, in their ability to relate to, and enjoy, contemporary art.
