3 LA STAGIONE/THE SEASON Già dal suo secondo anno di vita e dopo il felice esordio nelle competizioni, la Ferrari ha stretto un legame molto forte con i propri clienti, tanto da portare negli anni all istituzione di un dipartimento dedicato con sede sulla Pista di Fiorano, con lo scopo di portare in pista la loro passione per le corse. La volontà di creare una struttura che coordinasse tutte le attività sportive che avevano come protagonisti i suoi clienti fu naturale conseguenza di un ritorno al vertice e ai titoli mondiali nella Formula 1 e di un affermazione delle vetture Gran Turismo della Casa di Maranello in alcune tra le più prestigiose competizioni a ruote coperte, così come la scelta della sede, collocata accanto alla celebre Casa dalle finestre rosse dove Enzo Ferrari aveva il suo ufficio, ben si accordava con lo spirito di chi avrebbe dovuto operare in questa struttura, allora e sempre persone animate da una profonda passione e determinate ad offrire ai clienti l emozione della pista. Dedicando alla clientela sportiva una serie di attività costruite ad immagine dei suoi desideri, nel 1993 questo speciale Dipartimento ha istituito un campionato - il Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli - da disputare a bordo di vetture preparate e gestite direttamente, in modo da garantire parità tecnica e prestazioni simili ai clienti, divisi tra professionisti e semplici amatori. A questa iniziativa prima ha fatto seguito l ideazione di un attività non competitiva che riportasse in pista le monoposto di Formula 1 non più in uso agonistico, poi di due ambiziosi progetti di ricerca e sviluppo chiamati FXX e 599XX Programme, dal nome delle vetture prototipo che proprio grazie all impegno dei loro conduttori hanno contribuito alla crescita del Marchio, insieme ai vittoriosi protagonisti delle competizioni Gran Turismo Internazionali cui la struttura fornisce supporto tecnico. 4 LA STAGIONE/THE SEASON In only its second year and after a successful competition debut, Ferrari had established very close ties with its owners, to the extent that it led in time to the formation of its own department, based at the Fiorano Track, with the aim of getting owners out on track to exploit their passion for racing. The idea of establishing an organisation to coordinate all customer racing activities was the natural consequence of the company getting back on top in Formula 1, winning world titles, as well as the Maranello marque s GT cars stamping their authority on some of the most prestigious sports car races. It also seemed natural therefore to base the department alongside the famous house with the red windows where Enzo Ferrari had his office, as this was a perfect match for the spirit that would guide the work carried out inside. The people working here have a great passion for their work and they are determined to help owners enjoy the excitement of the race track. Among a series of activities aimed at the needs of owners who wanted to race, in 1993, this special department established the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli championship, run with cars prepared and managed in-house, thus ensuring technical parity and identical performance, for both professional and amateur racers. Following on from this, the next idea was for non-competitive activity using old Formula 1 cars whose racing career was over. Later came the ambitious FXX and 599XX Programmes aimed at research and development, bearing the name of the eponymous prototypes. The efforts of the owners of these cars made a real contribution to the growth of the marque, as did competitors in international GT series who could rely on the technical support of this department. 4 5

7 LA STAGIONE/THE SEASON Ripercorrere la storia del Ferrari Challenge significa rivivere vent anni di storia della Casa di Maranello, il cui DNA sportivo si tradusse, oltre che nell impegno costante in Formula 1, nella nascita di un campionato che nel tempo si è sviluppato fino a diventare un riferimento nella realtà di questo genere di corse. Tra le ragioni del successo di questo longevo campionato c è sicuramente lo spettacolo, garantito dalla partecipazione di clienti al debutto assoluto e piloti con una certa esperienza agonistica. Ai primi è riservata la Coppa Shell, con classifica separata e titolo finale, mentre ai secondi è dedicato il Trofeo Pirelli, ugualmente con titolo in palio. A partire da quest anno, per evitare sfide impari, professionisti e gentlemen driver competeranno in gare distinte. Significativi i cambiamenti apportati al campionato già a partire dal 2011, anno chiave nella storia del Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli grazie al debutto della 458 Challenge ed al conseguente innalzamento del livello agonistico della serie. Tra le novità della passata stagione anche l istituzione di un nuovo girone riservato ai clienti dell area Asia Pacifico accanto a quelli tradizionalmente dedicati a Italia, Europa e Nord America, che ha già saputo regalare grandi soddisfazioni ai mercati cui mancava un autentica tradizione motoristica. Nel 2012 alla 458 Challenge spetta il compito di raccogliere definitivamente l eredità della F430 Challenge in un campionato che unifica la serie tricolore e quella continentale in un unico girone europeo al fianco dei preesistenti Nord America e Asia Pacifico. Un area ospitalità rinnovata e dotata di tutti i comfort offre a piloti e team l opportunità di accogliere ospiti e sponsor in un ambiente consono alle loro esigenze. Opportunità offerta anche agli stessi sponsor del Challenge, interessati dalla serie per l accostamento ad un marchio prestigioso come Ferrari, ma anche per l ampia visibilità mediatica assicurata dalla TV. Nel Challenge tutto è congegnato per far trovare a proprio agio anche Concessionarie e officine autorizzate, le sole che per regolamento possono schierare le proprie vetture. Una regola che esiste sin dalla nascita del Campionato e che permette una gestione più trasparente, impossibile in caso di presenza di team esterni. 8 LA STAGIONE/THE SEASON Le gare sono disputate sempre su piste di grande fascino, nell ambito di eventi organizzati dalla stessa Ferrari, come i Ferrari Racing Days, occasioni uniche per vedere riunite in pista le principali attività gestite dal dipartimento Corse Clienti. Con il definitivo passaggio del testimone dalla F430 Challenge alla 458 Challenge nel 2012 le classifiche rimangono distinte nelle due categorie Trofeo Pirelli e Coppa Shell ma a cambiare è la durata delle gare, di trenta minuti l una, mentre viene mantenuta la formula che prevede due turni di qualifica da 30 minuti (oltre ad una sessione di 60 minuti di Prove Libere) in cui il primo turno di qualifica determina la griglia di Gara 1 ed il secondo la griglia di Gara 2. Insieme ai piloti iscritti singolarmente sono sempre ammessi gli equipaggi composti da due conduttori: in caso di equipaggio doppio ogni pilota disputerà una sessione di qualifica ed una gara, mentre ai fini della classifica vale la somma dei punti conquistati da entrambi i piloti. Per ogni gara, verrà attribuito al Conduttore (o ad entrambi i conduttori di un equipaggio doppio) un punto per la pole position ed uno per il giro veloce. Dal 2010 l introduzione della partenza lanciata secondo la normativa FIA, la Coppa Team ed i premi speciali per i vincitori di Trofeo Pirelli e Coppa Shell. Sempre un occhio di riguardo è destinato ai giovani iscritti - cui spettava l abbassamento della tassa d iscrizione prevista per gli under 25 - per i quali quest anno viene introdotta una Coppa Giovani, riservata ai soli piloti del Trofeo Pirelli, che si affianca ad una Coppa Gentleman per i piloti over 55. Rimane confermato un Contributo Ferrari Genuine per i primi cinque classificati di ogni categoria insieme ad una serie di iniziative mirate alla riduzione generale del costo di gestione della stagione sportiva. Per tutti comunque un impegno sportivo di livello molto elevato, con gare combattute dall inizio alla fine. Nel Trofeo Pirelli spiccano da sempre nomi di piloti conosciuti, che affrontano il Challenge per aumentare il proprio prestigio personale e quello della Concessionaria per la quale corrono, ma anche nomi di giovanissimi con qualche esperienza alle spalle, che nel Challenge e nella fama della Ferrari sperano di trovare un trampolino di lancio per il futuro. Come effettivamente si è verificato. Particolarmente combattute anche le gare della Coppa Shell che vedono al via gentleman driver dall età variabilissima e dai più disparati livelli di esperienza

9 LA STAGIONE/THE SEASON Going over the story of the Ferrari Challenge involves looking back on twenty years of the Maranello firm s history and a side of it that shares its DNA with its ever present involvement in Formula 1. Over time, the one-make series developed into the benchmark championship for this type of racing. There are many reasons for its success and longevity with the spectacle it provides at the top of the list, courtesy of a field made up from absolute beginners and drivers with a degree of racing experience. The former have their own classification which crowns its own champion, which is the Coppa Shell, while the latter race for their own trophy, the Trofeo Pirelli. Starting this year, to avoid any inequality in the races, the professional and the gentleman drivers will compete in separate races saw significant changes to the championship, which was also a key year for the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli as it marked the debut of the 458 Challenge car, which saw the standard of racing in the series go up a notch. Last year also witnessed a new series established for the Asia-Pacific region, bringing excitement to an area which to date had not had a very strong motor sport tradition, to run alongside the existing ones in Italy, Europe and North America. In 2012, the 430 Challenge will no longer be eligible, leaving the field clear for the 458 Challenge to carry on the great tradition, while the championships are being streamlined with the merger of the Italian one into a single European series to continue alongside North America and Asia-Pacific. The hospitality area for the events has had a makeover, boasting the highest level of comfort, so that drivers and teams can meet guests and sponsors in an environment that meets all their demands. The Challenge sponsors themselves not only benefit from the prestigious fall-out of being associated with Ferrari, but are also assured plenty of media coverage on TV. In the Challenge, the aim is to ensure everything goes smoothly for the Concessionaires and approved preparation specialists, who are the only ones allowed by the regulations to enter the championships. That rule has been in existence since the birth of the Championship, allowing for a degree of transparency that would not be possible if external teams were granted admission

10 LA STAGIONE/THE SEASON The races are always held on the best tracks, as part of events organised by Ferrari itself, such as the Ferrari Racing Days which host all the main activities run by the Corse Clienti department. While the F430 Challenge finally bows out, making way for the 458 Challenge, other changes for 2012 mean that while the two categories Trofeo Pirelli and Coppa Shell remain, the length of the races has changed to 30 minutes, while qualifying maintains its format of two 30 minute sessions, as well as an hour of Free Practice. The first qualifying decides the grid for Race 1 and the second for Race 2. Apart from drivers entered singly, entries are still accepted from crews made up of two drivers: in this latter case, each of the two drivers will take part in one qualifying session and one race, while at the end of the classification, the points scored by both drivers are added together. At each race, the driver, or both drivers in a crew, will score a point for pole position and one for the fastest race lap. In 2010, a rolling start was introduced in accordance with FIA procedures, with special prizes going to the winners of the Coppa Team, Trofeo Pirelli and Coppa Shell. Younger competitors are also looked after with a lower entry fee for the under-25s, who this year also get to race for a Coppa Giovani if competing in the Trofeo Pirelli, while there is also a Coppa Gentleman for the over 55s. As usual Ferrari Genuine Prize Money goes to the top five in each category, alongside a series of initiatives aimed at reducing the cost of taking part in a season s racing. However, what is available to all is a highly competitive series with the races being closely contested from start to finish. The Trofeo Pirelli always features some well known names who tackle the Challenge to up their own profile and prestige as well as that of the Concessionaire whose colours they fly. There are also some youngsters with just a bit of experience behind them, who hope that the Challenge and the Ferrari name will propel them towards a bright future in the sport, which has often been the case. The Coppa Shell races are particularly action packed, with the grids made up of gentleman drivers of all ages and levels of experience

Rispetto alla 458 Italia il propulsore V8 ad iniezione diretta da 4499 cm3, capace di erogare 570 CV a 9000 giri/min, resta strettamente di serie mentre sono state effettuati ritocchi sulla rapportatura e calibrazione del cambio F1 doppia frizione, per assicurare maggiore coppia ai bassi regimi. L utilizzo del differenziale elettronico E-Diff, presente sulla vettura stradale, rappresenta una novità rispetto ai modelli precedenti dedicati alla pista. Significativi gli interventi nell ambito della riduzione pesi che hanno coinvolto sia gli esterni che gli interni della vettura: i tecnici del Cavallino Rampante hanno lavorato in particolare sugli spessori della carrozzeria e sui materiali, facendo ricorso alla fibra di carbonio e al Lexan. Il lavoro di messa a punto ha generato un assetto specifico grazie a modifiche sulle sospensioni dotate di snodi in acciaio di tipo racing, molle più rigide, ammortizzatori monotaratura in alluminio, cerchi forgiati da 19 con serraggio centrale, pneumatici Pirelli slick di maggiori dimensioni e un altezza da terra ridotta di 50 mm. L impianto frenante Brembo è il CCM2 di nuova generazione integrato con il sistema ABS evoluto, installato per la prima volta sulla vettura laboratorio 599XX. Altra novità è l utilizzo dell F1- Trac, il più sofisticato sistema al mondo di controllo della trazione. Sviluppato da Ferrari, questo dispositivo assicura una stima continua del livello di aderenza a terra, sfruttandolo a scopo prestazionale. Per questa applicazione sono state sviluppate due calibrazioni specifiche per utilizzo pista con logiche e strategie di controllo derivate dall esperienza nel mondo delle corse (F1 e GT) e completamente integrate con l E-Diff per massimizzare le performance sia in ingresso che in uscita curva. La gestione delle differenti calibrazioni di ABS/EBD, E-Diff e F1-Trac avviene attraverso l utilizzo di un manettino posizionato sul volante, soluzione inedita per un modello dedicato al Ferrari Challenge. Il pilota può scegliere di utilizzare 3 configurazioni: posizione OFF (controllo di trazione disattivato), posizione 1 e posizione 2, queste ultime con livelli di intervento dei controlli progressivamente maggiori e selezionabili in funzione delle condizioni di aderenza della pista. Straordinario anche il valore di accelerazione laterale in curva, parametro fondamentale in ottica prestazione, che raggiunge 1,6 G. With respect to the 458 Italia, the 458 Challenge s 4,400 cc GDI V8, which punches out 570 CV at 9,000 rpm, remains strictly in production tune. However, modifications have been made to the gear ratios and calibration of the F1 dual clutch gearbox to guarantee better torque delivery at lower revs. This is also the first time that the E-Diff, used aboard the road-going car, has been employed on a trackdedicated model. Significant progress was also made with regard to weight reduction, both inside and out: the Prancing Horse technicians lavished particular attention on the thickness of the body panels and high tech materials, making widespread use of both lightweight carbon-fibre and Lexan. The tuning work also saw the 458 Challenge get a specific suspension set-up with steel uniball joints, single-rate alloy dampers and 19 centre-nut forged rims. It also sports larger dimension Pirelli slicks and has a 50 mm lower ride height. The new generation CCM2 brakes are supplied by Brembo and integrated with the evolved ABS system which debuted on the 599XX laboratory car. Another premiere on a Ferrari track-only car is the F1-Trac, the world s most sophisticated traction control system. Developed in-house by the Prancing Horse, it continually monitors grip levels for maximum high-performance road-holding. Two specific track-biased calibrations have been developed with control strategies and logics derived from Ferrari s extensive F1 and GT racing experience. Both are fully integrated with the E-Diff to boost performance to the maximum both into and out of corners. The ABS/EBD, E-Diff and F1-Trac settings are all now controlled from the steering wheel-mounted manettino, the first time this solution has been used on a Ferrari Challenge model. The driver has a choice of three configurations: OFF position (traction control deactivated) or Position 1 and Position 2 which offer progressively greater levels of intervention and can be selected to suit track grip conditions. The 458 Challenge also generates an extraordinary 1.6 G of lateral grip, a fundamental factor in high performance driving. 17 Competizioni GT LA STAGIONE/THE SEASON Da sempre l anima agonistica della Ferrari è costituita dall impegno nel Campionato del Mondo di Fomula 1 e nelle competizioni Gran Turismo, settore quest ultimo che vede la Casa di Maranello schierata in prima linea per mantenere il legame tra corse e produzione, reso indissolubile dalla tenace volontà di Enzo Ferrari. Dal 2006 la scena è stata monopolizzata dalla F430 con il dominio assoluto nei campionati di prima grandezza (Coppa Costruttori e titoli Piloti e Team nel 2006, nel 2007 e nel 2008 nel FIA GT, Coppa Costruttori e Team nel 2009; titolo a Squadre nel 2006 nell American Le Mans Series e titolo Piloti l anno successivo, con vittoria alla 12 Ore di Sebring per tre stagioni di fila; titolo Piloti nella Le Mans Series nella stagione 2007 e 2008 e successo nella 1000 km di Silverstone nel 2009 e nel Al trionfo nella 24 Ore di Le Mans conseguito dal 2005 al 2009 va ad aggiungersi la conquista dei campionati GT Spagnolo e GT Open nel 2009 e 2010 oltre ad un lungo elenco di successi nei campionati nazionali). 18 LA STAGIONE/THE SEASON Competizioni GT La 458 ottimizza tutta l accessoristica legata ai pit-stop, in considerazione del fatto che anche le gare endurance richiedono tempistiche molto strette nei rifornimenti. Un ulteriore novità sulla 458 ha riguardato il sistema delle sospensioni posteriori di tipo multilink (mentre sulla F430 erano a triangoli sovrapposti e a schema push-road) introducendo una soluzione che ha permesso di ottimizzare la guidabilità della vettura su strada. Sul motore è stata usata l iniezione diretta che ha permesso di ridurre considerevolmente i consumi tanto che, ad esempio, nell edizione 2011 della Le Mans Series, la 458 GT2 ha ottenuto il primato nella classifica LM GT Michelin Green, per costanti e ridotti valori di consumi. Nel 2011 la Ferrari ha vinto inoltre, con la 458 GT3, il titolo Piloti nel FIA GT, affrontando una nuova sfida con una vettura interamente da lei progettata, il cui sviluppo precedentemente era lasciato alla libera gestione di team privati. Ultima in ordine di tempo tra le declinazioni racing della 458, la Grand Am, sviluppata sempre in collaborazione con Michelotto Automobili sulla base della versione GT3 della berlinetta V8 Ferrari e destinata a gareggiare nel 2012 nella celebre serie nordamericana. Questa vettura tiene conto delle differenze regolamentari tra la serie americana ed europea ed, in particolare, sviluppa una potenza di 500 cavalli, registrando un funzionamento dell aerodinamica meno efficiente rispetto alle versioni GT. Diverso anche il restrittore da 48 mm ed il regime massimo sugli 8 mila giri. Importanti sono stati gli interventi sull impianto frenante della vettura che non presenta il sistema ABS così come è assente il controllo di trazione. Un ulteriore differenza rispetto alla GT3 riguarda il roll bar che necessita una protezione laterale più importante per garantire maggiore sicurezza in una serie in cui i contatti tra i piloti sono più frequenti. La vettura è inoltre equipaggiata con pneumatici Continental, fornitore unico della serie, caratterizzati da una mescola molto dura, sempre in rispetto del regolamento nordamericano

19 LA STAGIONE/THE SEASON Competizioni GT Ferrari s racing spirit has always been based around its participation in the Formula 1 World Championship and competition in GT racing, the latter reinforcing Ferrari s top line commitment to maintaining the links between racing and road cars, which harks back to the much held beliefs of Enzo Ferrari himself. Since 2006, the F430 has totally dominated the category, with championship wins at the highest level - Constructors Cup and Drivers and Teams titles in 2006, 2007 and 2008 and in the FIA GT, Constructors and Teams since It has also won the Teams title in the American Le Mans Series in 2006 and the Drivers title the following year, with three consecutive wins in the Sebring 12 Hours. Also on the palmares, the 2007 and 2008 Le Mans Series Drivers titles, with wins in the Silverstone 1000 kms in 2009 and It won at Le Mans from 2005 to 2009, also taking the Spanish GT and GT Open titles in 2009 and 2010, in addition to an extensive palmares at national level marked the race debut of the 458 Italia, developed in conjunction with Michelotto Automobili in GT2 racing and, for the first time in Ferrari s history in GT3 and Grand Am. The 458 definitely lived up to expectations, picking up where the F430 left off, one of the most successful cars of all time, also confirming the efforts Ferrari put in to maintaining its technical superiority. There were many notable wins in last year s main GT series: the Teams and Constructors titles in the prestigious Le Mans Series and Intercontinental Le Mans Cup, the Drivers title in the FIA GT and GT3 Asia, the Drivers and Teams in the Intercontinental GT Open, the British GT Championship and the BlancPain Endurance Series to name but a few. These wins were obtained with a car that did not need much in the way of modification, given that the production version of the 458 Italia features technology that is aimed at track use. Compared to the F430 GTC, the 458 GT2 delivers more performance and ensures a more consistent performance over a distance, because it uses its tyres less, which means it can pit one less time compared to its rivals. The 458 makes the most of all the equipment linked to pit stops, because refuelling time is tight even in long distance races. Another new element on the 458 relates to the rear suspension which uses a multilink system, as opposed to the triangulated system with pushrods on the F430. This solution makes it possible to optimise the driveability of the car on the road. The engine features direct injection which considerably reduces consumption so that in the 2011 Le Mans Series for example, the 458 GT2 took the prize in the LM GT Michelin Green category for reduced consumption figures. In 2011, Ferrari also won with the 458 GT3, taking the Drivers title in the FIA GT series, taking on a new challenge with a car designed entirely in-house, the development of which had previously been left to private teams to manage as they wished. The latest iteration of the 458 is the Grand Am, developed in conjunction with Michelotto Automobili, based on the berlinetta version of the V8 Ferrari GT3. It will race in 2012 in the famous American series. This car takes into account the different rules for the American series, particularly the less efficient aerodynamics for the 500 horsepower car, when compared to the GT version. Also different is the 48mm restrictor and an 8000 rpm rev limit. Significant changes have to been made to the car s braking system, which does not feature ABS, while also absent on the Grand Am is traction control. Another difference when compared to the GT3 concerns the rollover bar which features additional lateral protection to increase safety in a series where contact between cars is more frequent. The car uses tyres from Continental, the series sole supplier, with a very hard compound as specified in the regulations for the North American series

23 LA STAGIONE/THE SEASON La Ferrari rimane spesso un sogno irrealizzabile anche per dei campioni di Formula 1. Eppure questo sogno è divenuto realtà per alcuni fortunati gentleman driver che hanno acquistato una delle monoposto che hanno fatto la storia della Scuderia. Per questi collezionisti di sogni a motore, vengono organizzati eventi non competitivi che rientrano nell ambito delle manifestazioni gestite dal Dipartimento Corse Clienti di Maranello, come i Ferrari Racing Days e le Finali Mondiali. A questi si alternano test dedicati, sempre con sede presso circuiti celebri e dotati di tutte le moderne norme di sicurezza. Una garanzia, quest ultima, che si abbina alle moderne protezioni previste dagli attuali inflessibili regolamenti tecnici per le Formula 1. Come veri piloti ai clienti è soltanto richiesto di presentarsi sul circuito e di indossare tuta e casco; alla cura dell auto e al trasporto, oltre che all abbigliamento per la guida, provvede il dipartimento F1 Clienti, creato nel 2003 ed ubicato presso gli stabilimenti della Scuderia Ferrari. Un reparto che si occupa delle monoposto durante gli eventi ma che come attività primaria cura l assistenza e il restauro delle vetture prodotte dal 1970 ad oggi. O, per meglio dire, all altro ieri, perché ogni vettura viene ceduta solo dopo un embargo di due anni a partire dall ultima stagione ufficiale cui ha preso parte, al fine di mantenere riservato il knowhow tecnologico della Scuderia. Grazie all archivio meccanizzato che può fornire i disegni di tutti i particolari delle monoposto, il reparto è in grado di mettere le mani su qualsiasi vettura, recente o di un passato più lontano. E per queste ultime vengono richiamati in servizio gli stessi tecnici che un tempo seguivano direttamente Lauda, Alboreto o Prost, in qualità di consulenti speciali. La lunga sequenza di campionati vinti dalla Ferrari a partire dal 1999 ha visto crescere il numero dei clienti piloti, spinti anche dalla maggiore semplicità di guida delle vetture successive a quel periodo 2001 e 2002 soprattutto grazie ad un regolamento che permetteva il controllo elettronico della trazione e il sistema antistallo per il motore

24 LA STAGIONE/THE SEASON Inoltre la configurazione aerodinamica era meno sofisticata, altro aspetto che permetteva di prendere più facilmente confidenza con vetture che, nonostante un intervento sull elettronica per limitare a quota i giri del motore e il cambio con i rapporti fissi per evitare sostituzioni che non porterebbero vantaggi reali, possono raggiungere i 330 km/h sul rettilineo di Monza. Da un approccio graduale, facilitato dal lavoro di personalizzazione pre-consegna che comprende lo studio dell abitacolo secondo il fisico e la definizione di un assetto di base si arriva al debutto sulla pista di Fiorano, anche grazie ad un servizio di coaching che consente l avvicinamento alla guida e alle principali caratteristiche della Formula 1 al fianco di piloti di grande esperienza. Ferrari often remains an unrealisable dream even for Formula 1 world champions. And yet this dream has become reality for some fortunate gentleman drivers who, as Ferrari owners, have acquired one of the cars that have made up Ferrari s racing history. For these collectors of dream cars, non-competitive events are organised which fit in to other meetings organised every year by Maranello: Ferrari Racing Days and the Finali Mondiali. Such events alternate with other test days dedicated to these special owners. All activities take place on famous circuits, equipped with all the latest safety requirements, which match the modern levels of protection insisted on through the current F1 technical regulations. And just like real Formula 1 drivers, all the owners have to do is turn up at the race track and put on their helmet and overalls. All car maintenance, transport and even the race suits are provided by the Reparto F1 Clienti created in 2003 and based at the Scuderia Ferrari factory. The department looks after the cars during the events, but its core activity is the maintenance and restoration of Ferrari cars from 1970 to the present day. Actually, it might be more accurate to say from the past to the day before yesterday, given that cars are only taken on after a two-year delay following their final season of actual competition in order to keep the Scuderia s technological knowhow under wraps. Thanks to an automated archive that can supply drawings for every part of these single-seaters, the department can get their hands on any car, be it recent or from the distant past. Taking on this task in the role of special consultants, conscripted again if you will, are the same mechanics who once attended to Lauda, Alboreto and Prost. The long run of championship wins for Ferrari, dating back to 1999, saw a growth in the number of ownerdrivers. They have also been helped by the fact that these cars are particularly easy to drive, especially those from 2001 and 2002, as the rules allowed for electronic traction control and they had an anti-stall system on the engine. Furthermore the aerodynamic configuration was less sophisticated, which means drivers can be more confident behind the wheel. Even though these cars have their revs electronically limited to 17,000 rpm, and a gearbox with set ratios to avoid changes that would bring no real advantage, they can still hit 330 km/h going down the main straight at Monza. The process takes a gradual approach, with personalized modifications available, including adjusting the cockpit area to suit the size and physique of the driver, as well as using a baseline set-up. After that comes a track debut at Fiorano, thanks also to a coaching service in the company of very experienced drivers that leads to advances in driving and the main requirements for Formula

27 LA STAGIONE/THE SEASON XX PROGRAMMES Nell ambito delle attività non competitive gestite dal Dipartimento Corse Clienti di Maranello due programmi di collaborazione tecnica sono stati destinati ad un selezionato gruppo di clienti che hanno acquistato le Ferrari FXX e le 599XX messe in produzione, utilizzabili solo in pista. Prendendo il nome dal modello delle vetture, questi due particolari programmi di ricerca e sviluppo coinvolgono i clienti collaudatori in occasione di eventi organizzati da Ferrari su alcune delle piste più prestigiose in Europa, Asia e Nord America, grazie all assistenza diretta di un gruppo di tecnici e di un team di piloti professionisti. Questi speciali istruttori mettono a disposizione tutta la loro esperienza fungendo da veri e propri consulenti per quanto riguarda l affinamento della tecnica di guida, la spiegazione delle traiettorie e la gestione del mezzo in generale: la sessione in pista inizia con un giro di installazione, cui fanno seguito due giri cronometrati e quindi un attività dettata dalle preferenze del pilota. Tutto termina sempre con un debriefing molto approfondito perché il ruolo di questi particolari collaudatori è valutato con attenzione dai tecnici. I test rappresentano infatti un motivo di crescita per chi guida ma anche una fonte di apprendimento per chi deve realizzare i futuri modelli Ferrari.Il proprietario è libero di poter utilizzare la propria vettura anche in sessioni private su qualsiasi pista e, nel caso lo desideri, può lasciarla in consegna a Maranello, chiedendo alla stessa Ferrari di provvedere al trasporto in occasione degli eventi. 28 LA STAGIONE/THE SEASON XX PROGRAMMES As part of the non-competitive activity run by Maranello s Corse Clienti department, there are two technical collaboration programmes involving a select group of owners who have acquired a Ferrari FXX or a 599XX, produced exclusively for track use. Taking their names from the car models, these two special research and development programmes involve the owner-test drivers at events organised by Ferrari at some of the most famous race tracks in Europe, Asia and North America, with the aid of a group of engineers and a team of professional drivers. These special instructors bring all their experience to bear in explaining how to finesse driving technique, choosing the right lines and the general management of the car. The track sessions begins with an installation lap, followed by two timed laps and then moves forward based on the preference of the individual driver. An in depth debrief always follows the driving, because the roles of these particular test drivers is carefully evaluated by the engineers. In fact, the test represents a chance to improve for those at the wheel and also brings a font of knowledge to those who will go on to design the Ferraris of the future. The owners can also use their cars in private sessions on various tracks and, if they wish, the cars can be left at Maranello and delivered to each event by Ferrari transportation. The livery of these limited edition cars can be personalised to meet specific requests of the owners who provide valuable information and acquire data that is aimed at continuous evolutiojn. Indeed, a specific kit based on these observations has been produced for the FXX programme which has run since 2006 and the 599XX, that started in 2010 and they will continue to evolve through the 2012 season
