Cineca has installed Cisco HPC InfiniBand and Ethernet networks for the HPC cluster and as part of an IBM System Cluster 1350 solution, which includes more than 1,200 BladeCenter servers. The solution offers 10-gigabit InfiniBand connectivity with support for more than half a petabyte of data and will allow universities and leading research and government organizations to cut costs and time necessary for scientific, medical and geophysical development. "The impact of deploying technology from Cisco and IBM to improve the cost, quality and capacity of services we can offer our customers is very significant. Projects such as assessing and improving risk management if Mount Vesuvius erupts, or developing a new generation in molecular dynamics, would not have been possible before deploying the Cisco and IBM System Cluster 1350 solution, said Sanzio Bassini, director of Cineca's System and Technology Department, in a statement. The collaboration with Cisco and IBM will also increase knowledge transfer to help Cineca achieve its mission to provide customers with the most advanced services and solutions and to help them innovate." The Cisco HPC solution, comprising InfiniBand and Ethernet networks and a storage area network, supports five main computer systems. The solution has helped Cineca develop a layered campus network architecture. This includes Cisco Ethernet and InfiniBand switch modules for IBM BladeCenter and Cisco SFS 7000 Series InfiniBand Server Switches offering high-bandwidth HPC cluster solution for interconnecting a cluster's computing nodes. "Cineca shows how enterprises, governments and academic organizations can use high-performance computer clusters to run HPC applications in order to provide faster 'time to enlightenment' that can increase an organization's profitability and competitiveness," said Carlo Mirone, director for the public sector market, Cisco Italy, in a statement. In ballo c'è l'accesso dei ricercatori europei ai sistemi di supercalcolo da 200 teraflops, ora più efficiente grazie ad una moltiplicazione della velocità di interconnessione. L'infrastruttura europea per applicazioni di supercalcolo DEISA (Distributed European Infrastructure for Supercomputing Applications) ha portato quella velocità ad un fattore dieci volte superiore al passato, raggiungendo i 10Gbps attraverso collegamenti dedicati progettati e messi in opera da GÉANT2, la rete pan-europea per la ricerca e l'educazione. Come noto, GÉANT2 è la maggiore rete della ricerca europea, connette tra loro 34 paesi sviluppandosi per 50mila chilometri, assicurando connessioni con Asia e Nordamerica. Come spiegano i promotori di queste iniziative, la novità permetterà di sfruttare al meglio il supercalcolo in progetti come SEISSOL (simulazioni di terremoti) e COMSIMM (simulazioni del trend corrente e futuro del clima). "Le richieste di risorse di supercalcolo tra i diversi domini scientifici - si legge in una nota - stanno aumentando, nel 2007 sono previsti 23 progetti. Tra i progetti già operativi ci sono ICAROS (ozono stratosferico e cambiamenti climatici), GYRO3d (instabilità del plasma) ed HELIM (interazioni radiazione-materia)".
