4 CONTENTS This support pack is one of four which were developed by Kilmarnock College in partnership with Higher Still Development Unit. Other packs issued cover German, Spanish and French. Each pack includes sample student material for each of the three units at Intermediate 1: Personal and Social Language Language in Work Transactional Language. The material covers Reading and Listening texts with comprehension, speaking and writing tasks. Writing is formally assessed only in one unit in the Intermediate 1 course. Detail of this is in the NAB package for the Language in Work unit. Centres will wish to consider the likely progression routes of students when deciding to what extent writing should be developed and practised. Each of the packs does not constitute a complete course that would cover a whole session as this was not the intention. The material has been designed in response to requests for illustration of the type of course work likely to be suitable for students operating at the level of Intermediate 1. Most centres will have existing resources of a similar nature which can be used to prepare students for the assessment requirements of the Intermediate 1 units and course. Another support material at Intermediate 1 is the Accelerated Beginners Pack (issued in February 2000). This was produced for centres dealing with able beginners who are perhaps starting a new language and who might reach Intermediate 2 level relatively quickly. In contrast, the material in this pack is for students who are likely to be going through a complete Intermediate 1 course probably over a complete session. However, centres are free to use this material as they see fit with students following various progression routes. Tapes to accompany the Listening texts are being produced and will be issued later. Alberto, their son meets you at the airport. Questions 1 Mio padre non ha potuto venire perche lavora. Ci trovara a casa alle sei. His father is not with him. Why not? Mi alzo alle dieci e vado prendere un caffé al bar, cosi faccio colazione cogli amici. Generalmente si mangia dei biscotti con un cappucino. Pranzo verso mezzogiorno e se fa bel tempo faccio due passi in campagna con i genitori. Se piove comunque vado al cinema a vedere un film. Preferisco vedere un film che fa ridere. Alle cinque ritorno a casa per fare i compiti. Generalmente devo fare on po di matematica e d inglese. L inglese e abbastanza facile ma la matematica e sempre molto difficile. Si cena sempre alle sette la sera con tuta la famiglia. Mio fratello non cena con noi, e troppo piccolo, ha soltanto due anni. Mangiamo due o tre piatti, degli spaghetti, dei ravioli o della minesrta, poi per secondo della carne o della frittata, poi un dolce. Quanto mi piace il dolce, sopratutto il gelato. Ask each other questions to find out the maximum amount of information about the others in the group. The kind of information you could attempt to discover about the others could include: Name Age Brothers and/or sisters Do they live in a house or a flat Are they all full-time at school or do they also attend college What are their favourite subjects What would they like to do after school (when they leave) What are their hobbies What do they do at weekends Modern Languages: Italian Intermediate 1 Personal & Social Language 7

12 Italian: Intermediate 1 - Speaking Personal and Social Language You are going to Italy as an au pair and having already written to the family you decide to prepare a cassette to introduce yourself and give some information about your life here in Scotland. Your tape could include the following: Introduce yourself, name age etc. Talk a bit about your family and school Talk a bit about your hobbies and interests Explain what a normal week would consist of i.e. time you get up/when you eat/what you would eat and what you do at weekends. Both the assistant and the customer use Lei the polite for of tu meaning you. For example: La messa dentro Lei iera Lei mi ha detto che la batteria dura dalle sei alle otto ore. Pisa ha la sua torre pendente, Roma il colosseo e Milano ha il suo Duomo.Il duomo indica la chiesa principale di una citta: per esempio il duomo di firenze, il duomo di Siena, il duomo di.. insomma, ce ne sono tanti.l architettura spettacolare del Duomo di Milano e conosciuta in tutto il mondo.la Piazza del Duomo e il cuore della citta di Milano. Non e soltanto un luogo d incontro per tanti Milanesi e una meta obbligatoria per i turisti ma e anche lo sfondo ideale per fotografie di modo. L Italia occupa uno dei primi posti nel mondo della moda, nomi come Versace, Armani e Prada sono riconosciuti in tutto il mondo.parole come stile ed eleganza sono sinonime con l abbigliamento di marca italiana.e non e solamente per l alta moda che L Italia e sopratutto Milano sono conosciuti.forse avete comprato un paio di scarpe DIADORA o ELLESSE.Anche questi sono prodotti italiani. Come sapete Milano si trova nel nord dell Italia.D inverno a Milano se non piove, nevica o sicuramente c e la nebbia. D estate si sta benissimo a Milano pero ci sono tanti turisti e gli alberghi sono pieni. Milano allora non e soltanto una citta industriale ma anche una citta turistica.
