2 GAIA an alliance for Bologna The GAIA urban forestation project is aimed at combatting climate change by planting new trees in the Bologna area. Urban greenery plays an important role among the possible measures for protecting and offsetting climate change. Plant biology contributes to the absorption of emissions and other pollutants, thus improving the quality of the air, revitalizing the urban environment and reducing the heat island effects typical in cities. The project, which has been created by Bologna Town Council in collaboration with Cittalia, the Fondazione Anci Recerche, Impronta Etica, the Institute of Biometeorology, CNR and Unindustria Bologna, is founded on partnership between the public and private sectors, i.e. the town council and local businesses. Participation of the latter is on a voluntary basis and involves compensating for the emissions they themselves produce. The need to plant new trees to improve living conditions in the city goes hand in hand with the growing interest businesses have in following a path towards a sustainable environment. This means they want to collaborate in finding methods and tools to put into operation the use of urban forestation as a means of controlling the environment. GAIA also wants to involve the community in the project through an Ethics Committee made up of Chairmen from the different quarters of the city. This committee will have the duty of guaranteeing that the project is managed correctly and follows the pre-set objectives as well as co-operating with residents to decide on areas to be planted. GAIA s objective is to enrich Bologna s green areas with 3,000 new trees. The GAIA Management Group has been set up to control the partnership model and procedures for the selection and planting of green areas. The Group consists of the G. Marconi Airport, Bologna, the Coop Adriatica, Enel, Gruppo Hera, Gruppo Unipol, La Perla, Manutencoop and M. Casale Bauer. This nucleus of businesses has been with the project since the beginning and supported the pilot stage when 116 trees were planted in the Villa Angeletti park, the courtyard of the Palazzo d Accursio and in the Roveri industrial estate. A further 11 businesses have joined the project, subscribing to the experimental phase. They are: Life GD, Interporto, Bologna Fiere, Granarolo, Mec-Track, Cadiai, STS, BRT S.p.A., Indica Srl, Piccoli Motori srl and PS Mobile srl. This has enabled 1000 trees to be planted in other city parks. TREES Compensating for emissions: an opportunity for local businesses. ton Company what it has compensated Gruppo Hera Gruppo Unipol Enel Manutencoop Aereoporto Bologna COOP Adriatica M.Casale Bauer Every business has an impact on the environment because its activities emit and other pollutants which are then transformed into gases adding to the greenhouse effect. These emissions can be measured using scientific calculations to determine the carbon footprint of every process, product or service. The carbon footprint is an indicator of the amount of raw material and energy consumption and it helps to identify waste, inefficiency and potential areas of improvement. Using this indicator it is possible to identify strategies for reducing emissions and compensating for what cannot be eliminated by using methods such as planting trees. This compensation process has undoubted advantages for the environment and for people s health and offers great opportunities to businesses in terms of innovation and market competitiveness as well as providing an opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to solidarity. GAIA offers its members the tools and support necessary for identifying the most suitable compensation measures for each individual business. There are many sectors in which action can be taken: from the internal production process to the individual product and service, from energy consumption to an office for business trips, from the publication of journals and leaflets to the organization of events. The projected specification for trees used in the GAIA Project is 3 tons with an average life of 50 years. The national average however, is based on a value of 0.7 tons as the average absorption of a tree. 3 Green areas selected for the GAIA Project. The green areas chosen for the GAIA Project have been selected from all the areas belonging to Bologna Town Council. The areas of choice can be divided into urban parks, hillside parks and local green areas which are multi-functional in that they provide healthy recreation. There are also historical interest gardens, special areas which provide a unique service, for example school gardens, botanic gardens etc. as well as heritage areas which have not until now been green areas but which can take a significant number of trees. The latter will not be accessible to the general public but will mean a significant contribution in terms of revitalizing the territory and absorption of emissions. Green urban areas have different functions which have been taken into account in their evaluation: ecological-environmental; health; their contribution to the psychological and physical well-being of the public; need for protection; necessary care of all neglected or sensitive areas in the territory such as riverbanks, escarpments, areas at risk of landfall; social and recreational; cultural and educational; aesthetic and architectural. 4 Trees absorb carbon dioxide in the atmosphere through a process of photosynthesis. They use it to grow and then release oxygen. They are also capable of intercepting and holding various pollutants, both gases and in particle form, which when inhaled cause serious health problems. Using a precise scientific approach the CNR Institute of Biometeorology has identified the trees with the highest potential for absorbing pollutants and least risk of provoking allergy. They analyzed the following eco-physiological characteristics: absorption of, potential dust capture, potential absorption of gassy pollutants, emission of organic bird compost and potential ozone production. Calculations to estimate storage were done on 24 species which, on the basis of scientific knowledge and the requirements of Bologna town council, were suitable for urban planting. The analyses provide a useful tool for the public-private partnership as they are useful both to businesses for determining their capacity to compensate for their activities (carbon footprint) and for public bodies for evaluating the quality and quantity of reductions obtained by planting green areas ALLORO Albero o arbusto sempreverde (h. max 12 m) FRASSINO COMUNE (h >25 m) KOELREUTERIA (h 8-15 m) BAGOLARO Pianta di II grandezza (h 15 / 25 m) FOTINIA RED ROBIN Arbusto o piccolo albero sempreverde (h. max 5 m) LIGUSTRO Arbusto sempreverde (h. max 3 m) CERRO (h > 25 m) 30 anni in città: Kg 50 anni in parco: Kg GELSO BIANCO MELO DA FIORE Pianta di IV grandezza (h m) CILIEGIO GINKGO (h > 25 m) accrescimento lento OLMO COMUNE (h >25 m) OLMO GIAPPONESE (h > 25 m) ORNIELLO /lento SAMBUCO Pianta di IV grandezza (h 2.5 / 8 m) accrescimento lento SOFORA DEL GIAPPONE Pianta di II grandezza (h m) accrescimento lento TIGLIO NOSTRANO (h > 25m) TIGLIO SELVATICO Pianta di II grandezza (h 15 / 25 m) VIBURNO TINO Arbusto sempreverde (h. max 3 m) MIRABOLANO
5 Partnership tools There are various documents and aids related to the GAIA project which can be consulted on the website and which are there to ensure that things are done correctly. There is also support available for the businesses which decide to enter into partnership with the council. They are helped to identify the methods of compensation most suitable for their needs in line with the contribution they want to make and the activity they carry out. For this reason two documents have been realized, uno for Municipalities and one for companies. In the first part of both benefits of the partnership for cities and for business are explained in details, and the minimum requirements for the repeatability of GAIA. The process is distinguished in the two documents addressed to Municipalities and companies, and it is organized in order to guide step by step the reader in the different operative phases required, by describing them in detail. Each phase is composed of a number of steps that can be implemented in a different way according to the features and the needs of the local context. The six requirements of GAIA need to be maintained in any case. At the end of each phase a list of the outputs expected is given, and in correspondence to some steps there is a list of suggestions useful for the implementation of the activities forseen.
