6 Il passato prossimo with avere The passato prossimo tense is used to describe an action in the past that happened once. It is formed using the auxiliary/helping verb (avere or essere) and the past participle of the verb you re talking about (usually ending in ato, - ito or uto). So if you want to say I ate, you need: Ho + mangiato (auxiliary) (past participle) MAKING THE PAST PARTICIPLE You make the past participle or are and ire verbs by starting with the infinitive (the verb when it s not joined up to anyone) and cutting off the re andare andare andato dormire dormire dormito -ere verbs usually end in uto but are a bit more tricky as there are lots of irregular ones. The ones you need to know at the moment are: prendere (to take) preso think ho preso il sole - I sunbathed. leggere (to read) letto. Ho letto I read avere as auxiliary verb Most verbs use avere (to have) as their auxiliary, for example: ho mangiato I ate hai mangiato you ate ha mangiato he/she ate abbiamo mangiato we ate avete mangiato you all ate hanno mangiato - they ate The ending of the past participle doesn t change if the auxiliary verb is avere. 6

8 Il passato prossimo with essere The verb andare (to go) uses essere (to be) as its auxiliary. To say I went, you need Sono + andato (auxiliary) (past participle) Unlike the verbs which use avere as their auxiliary, you need to change the ending of the participle when you re using essere. Therefore, if you re a girl, you would say sono andata I went (female) I went (male) We went (all female) We went (mixed or all male group) sono andata sono andato siamo andate siamo andati sono andato/a I went sei andato/a you went è andato/a he/she went siamo andati/e we went siete andati/e- you all went sono andati/e they went The mnemonic SUPERSMART VAN can help you to remember the verbs that take essere as their auxiliary. Stare, Uscire, Partire, Essere, Rimanere, Salire, Morire, Arrivare, Restare, Tornare, Venire, Andare, Nascere And don t forget reflexives! There also need essere as their auxiliary. 10 The future tense il futuro semplice You use the future tense to express what will happen. To form the future of regular are, -ere and ire verbs: 1. Remove the e of the infinitive ending > finir- 2. For verbs ending in are, change the a of the infinitive ending to e > ascoltare > ascoltar- > ascolter- 3. You then add the future ending for the person you are talking about. 16 Use the sentences to complete the rules for di: di + il = di + la = di + l = (use for a destra di, a sinistra di) 4. The bed is to the right of the wardrobe 5. The lamp is to the left of the bed. Now use your notes to write at least five of these sentences into Italian about your bedroom and where things are. Remember if it s vicino a, accanto a, di fronte a, davanti a, you need al/alla/all. If it s a destra di, a sinistra di, use del/della/dell and if it s tra, dietro, sotto or sopra you just need the il/la/l. 16

20 Translate the following into Italian (you will have to translate a similar passage in your exam) Usually I go on holiday to the mountains because it is fun. I like skiing with my family. Last year I went to France for four days with my friends. We travelled by coach and we stayed in a hotel. It was very relaxing! Next Christmas we are going to go to Rome! I am going to speak lots of Italian and I will visit the Vatican and the Colosseum. Highlight the Italian that you didn t know to help you focus on this for the exam. 20
