6 SRI LANKA: the report All those Italians who participated in the collection of donations for the victims of the tsunami of December 26, 2004; the Un aiuto subito Committee of Corriere della Sera and Tg5, RAI, Telecom Italia, Tim, 3, Vodafone and Wind, who collected funds for the populations stricken by the tsunami through the single number 48580, who chose to entrust the donations collected to the Civil Protection Department and who supported our work by participating in the meetings of the Donors Committee; the institutions of the Republic, the members of Parliament, the foundations, associations, civil protection volunteer organisations, the schools, health agencies, professional bodies, departments of the Armed Forces and the State Police Forces, the municipal governments, the provinces, the regions, and the companies who entrusted the donations they made or collected to the Department; the members f the Trustees Committee, the Audit Commission, and the verification working group who performed their functions in a spirit of great cooperation with the Department; the members of Parliament and of the Government, the authorities, Italian diplomatic representatives in Colombo, and those Italian citizens who followed our work and visited our construction sites in Sri Lanka; the journalists and television operators who wrote, described and broadcast informational reports on what we were doing in Sri Lanka with the donations entrusted to us; the Firefighters, the volunteers of the civil protection organisations, of the Regions, of the health agencies and the technicians of the government agencies and companies who participated in the emergency rescue operations in Southeast Asia and ensured the complete operability of the Advance Medical Posts and field hospital set up by Civil Protection; the experts in cooperation and humanitarian aid and the professionals who collaborated with the Department, providing their services at the temporary Mission Structure in Colombo; 308

7 The Civil Protection Department wishes to thank the directors and staff of the NGOs, agencies and institutions who carried out the projects in the General Programme; the Department personnel who worked in Sri Lanka in the emergency phase, in direct project management, in relations with the implementing partners, and in the area of administration and accounting; the Sri Lankan personnel who worked with us at the Mission; the personnel in Rome, in the Operations Room, the COAU, the various offices and sections of the Department who worked for the success of the mission in Sri Lanka in all its phases. the witnesses who offered us an account of their experiences; the Sri Lankan companies that worked for us; the boys and girls who performed their civil service in Sri Lanka; the Government and authorities of Sri Lanka who accepted our aid, enabling us to get it to the populations stricken by the tsunami and cooperating in the completion of the projects; the heads of the health and school facilities, of the local communities, the microfinance institutions, and the religious communities who dialogued with us, helping us to carry out projects best suited to the real needs of the beneficiaries; the men, women, children, old people and youths of every ethnic and religious group whom we encountered in these years in every area of Sri Lanka where we worked, who greeted us with smiles and gave us their thanks. 309
