5 Introduzione E recentemente stata fondata a Canberra l associazione senza fine di lucro denominata PIAR, Pubblicazioni per i ricercatori Italo-Australiani. L associazione PIAR nasce con lo scopo di promuovere la conoscenza e la diffusione delle attivita di ricerca, da quella di base e scientifica a quella applicata e tecnologica, intraprese in entrambi i Paesi, attraverso la realizzazione di testi, riviste e siti web in doppia lingua (italiano e inglese). L iniziativa e sorta nell ambito delle attivita promosse dall Ufficio dell Addetto Scientifico dell Ambasciata d Italia a Canberra e si inserisce come strumento per le associazioni ARIA (Associazione per la Ricerca fra Italia e Australia) sorte negli anni passati con lo scopo di promuovere sul territorio la cooperazione bilaterale con l Italia. Come e noto, in Australia sono attive sei associazioni ARIA, nel QLD, nel NSW, nel VIC, nel SA, nel WA e nel Territorio dell ACT. Le associazioni ARIA sono cosituite da ricercatori italiani, di origine italiana, ma anche australiani, interessati alla cooperazione con l Italia. Parallelamente in Italia, esiste una rete di ricercatori interessati, e in alcuni casi coinvolti, nelle attivita di ricerca in Australasia. In totale, al network delle ARIA, afferiscono circa 400 membri. L attivita principale dell Associazione PIAR sara la realizzazione e la pubblicazione del Bollettino della Comunita Scientifica in Australasia, rivista quadrimestrale bilingue, nata nel marzo 2001 come strumento di divulgazione delle attivita promosse dall Ufficio Scientifico dell Ambasciata. Il Bollettino si e consolidato attraverso le 22 edizioni, grazie ad articoli e rubriche d interesse per le comunita scientifiche dei due Paesi ed e' oggi considerato un riferimento importante da accademici e ricercatori italiani ed australiani interessati alla cooperazione bilaterale, ma anche ad un portale sull Europa. Il bollettino sta finalmente ottenendo il successo che aspettavamo. Le statistiche relative alla consultazione del website ci danno dei dati molto incoraggianti. Per esempio, a dicembre ci sono state mediamente 114 hits al giorno (mentre erano 90 a novembre), di cui il 30% proveniva dagli USA, il 25 non era possibile identificare il paese di provenienza, il 18% dall Italia e il 3% dall Italia e poi da altri paesi dell Unione Europea. E interessante evidenziare come grazie ai miglioramenti approtati alla gestione generale del bollettino, l intero volume in formato pdf e stato scaricato 454 volte in agosto e ben 1213 volte in dicembre. La nostra pubblicazione quadrimestrale, e diventata un apuuntamento fisso per il lettore, non avendo mai mancato una pubblicazione durante i 6 anni di attivita ; adesso, grazie ai contenuti presentati nel corso delle 22 edizioni, costituisce un importante punto di riferimento per accademici e ricercatori accademici italiani e australiani che sono interessati alla cooperazione bilaterale ed anche ad un apertura verso l Europa. Le statistiche dimostrano chiaramente che le informazioni contenute nel Bollettino sono d interesse anche per I centri di ricerca statunitensi, che cercano ulteriori informazioni sulle attivita di ricerca condotte in Italia e in Australia. Il comitato di redazione e sempre stato uno strumento insostituibile per le attivita del Bollettino. Nuovi colleghi ci hanno dato il privilegio di unirsi al gruppo gia esistente; molti di loro sono stati particolarmente attivi nel mandarci periodicamente articoli e a procurarli da colleghi e amici. La nuova associazione PIAR, in particolare, intende promuovere il bilinguismo (italiano e inglese) attraverso la realizzazione di nuovi siti web e la pubblicazione di testi, sia in formato cartaceo che elettronico, per la promozione di attivita che coinvolgono formazione universitaria, ricerca e sviluppo in tutti loro campi quali arte, letteratura, scienza e tecnologia. 6 Introduction PIAR (Publication for Italian and Australian Researchers), a new no-profit association, has been recently incorporated in Canberra. The association PIAR aims to promote awareness of basic and applied research activities, carried out in Italy and Australia, through publication of newsletters, bulletins and web-sites in both languages (Italian and English). The initiative was conceived among the activities promoted by the Office of the Scientific Attache of the Embassy of Italy in Canberra and aims to become a tool for the Associations ARIA (Association for research between Italy and Australasia), incorporated in the past years with the aim to promote bilateral cooperation with Italy. As it is known, in Australia six associations ARIA have now been incorporated, in QLD, NWS, VIC, SA, WA and ACT. Members of the ARIA associations are researchers from Italy or with Italian background, but also from Australia, interested to cooperation with Italy. At the same time in Italy, there is a network of researchers who are interested and sometimes already involved, in research activities with Australia. The ARIA network counts in total some 400 members. The main activity of the association PIAR will be the management and publication of the Bollettino della Comunita Scientifica in Australasia, which is published, since March 2001, every four months in both languages. The Bollettino is a tool to promote the Scientific Attache Office activities, which became stronger through the 22 editions, thanks to articles and columns interesting for the scientific communities of both countries. The Bollettino is now considered an important focus for Italian and Australian academics and researchers interested to bilateral cooperation, but also as a portal towards Europe. The Bollettino is obtaining the success that we have been waiting for, for some time. There is some very encouraging information from our provider on the progress of our daily visitors. For example, in December there were on average 114 hits a day (90 in the month of November) comprising of 30% from USA, 25% not identified, 18% from Italy, 3% from Australia and other countries of the UE were in the list as well. It is interesting to highlight how, thanks to the improvements in the overall management of the Bollettino, the download of the full issue of the Bollettino increased from 454 hits in August, to 1213 in December. This four-monthly publication, well established in its 6 years of activity, in which it has never missed an appointment with the reader, thanks to its contents in the course of the 22 editions, is today considered an important point of reference for Italian and Australian academics and researchers who are interested in bilateral cooperation and is also an opening towards Europe. As the statistics reveal, the informative content in the Bollettino is considered interesting even by the research centres of the United States who search for further information on the activity of research carried out both in Italy and Australia. The Editorial Committee has always been an irreplaceable instrument for the activity of the Bollettino. We have been privileged with the joining of some new colleagues that will assist along side the existing group. Many of them have been particularly active in periodically sending us articles or in providing articles from colleagues and friends. Further, the new association PIAR aims to promote bilinguism, Italian and English, designing new web-sites and publishing manuscripts, in hard and electronic format, regarding higher education, research and development in every field such as arts, literature, science and technology. 16 EVENTI Promossi dall Ufficio Scientifico dell Ambasciata d Italia in Canberra bullettin.canberra@esteri.it April 2007, Grand Pacific Hotel, Lorne Victoria The WISE Group 2007 workshop in Australia The WISE Group (Waves In Shallow Environment) is an informal association of all the best wave modellers who meet once a year to discuss the latest findings and which lines of research to pursue in the future. The group is a follow-up of the former WAM Group (WAve Modelling) who developed the WAM model, the most widely used wave prediction model, presently in use at most of the world meteo-oceanographic centres. When WAM closed his ten year expected period, the WISE Group followed up, with the attention focused on shallow and coastal water applications, but with eyes open both to the most fundamental processes and to practical applications. The group meets once a year, typically in Americas and Europe. In 2006, the meeting has been in Venice, of April, with about 60 participants. In Venice the Steering Committee has decided about the location for next year, Australia, in the person of prof. Ian Young, PO Box 218 Hawthorn, Victoria 3122, has kindly offered to host the meeting. The proposed location is the Grand Pacific Hotel at Lorne which is a nice little town at the Great Ocean Road in Victoria for which the Swinburne University is negotiating a special price. Council Chairman of the WISE Group, ISMAR S.Polo 1364, Venice, Italy luigi.cavaleri@ismar.cnr.it 4 May 2007, Australian Academy of Science - Canberra Australia Development and Evolution of Higher Cognition in Animals Each year, the Australian Academy of Science hosts as part of its Annual General Meeting, a one day Symposium on a scientific issue of contemporary broad interest. The 2007 Symposium will be on Development and Evolution of Higher Cognition in Animals. Programs and proceedings from past Symposia are available at: The convenor of the 2007 Academy symposium is Professor Lesley Rogers, Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and Australian Vice Chancellor s Committee representative of the Animal Research Review Panel. The date for the event is Friday, 4 May 2007 and it will be held in Canberra at the Shine Dome. Professor Sir Patrick Bateson from the University of Cambridge (UK) will commence by delivering the plenary address entitled: Taking the stink out of instinct. This will provide an overview of higher cognition in animals as well as relevant aspects of evolution and development. Presenters may also be interested that the Symposium is preceded by two days of scientific events and they would be most welcome to attend these sessions. At the 2007 Symposium Professor Giorgio Vallortigara, who is Professor of Psychobiology/ Physiological Psychology and Dean of Faculty at the University of Trieste, Department of Psychology and B.R.A.I.N. Centre for Neuroscience, Trieste, Italy; has accepted the invitation as one of the international speakers to present a talk addressing the science of animal neuroscience, psychology, and behaviour. Professor Vallortigara has indicated that his talk at our next Symposium in 2007 is to be entitled The cognitive chicken: Higher mental processes in a humble brain & 17 August 2007, Brisbane Convention Centre, Bilateral workshop within the First World Congress on Pathology Informatics Within the first international conference on Pathology informatics a bilateral (Italian-Australias) event will be organised on the development of the research activities applied to biomedical sciences aimed to an exchange on the national and bilateral experiences and projects. COntatto: Dr Francesco Sicurello, francesco_sicurello@regione.lombardia.it September 2007, Stradbroke Island (QLD) Nanostructured Materials for Applications in Energy and Electronics, The rapidly emerging areas of nanoscale science and technology are focussed on the design, fabrication, and characterisation of functional objects having dimensions at the nanometer length scale. New advances in this field are expected to have long range implications in a wide variety of different scientific and engineering disciplines. The importance of nanoscale science is growing worldwide and it is now widely recognised as a critical component to the future growth of the world economy. The NMAEE workshop will allow leading Italian and Australian researchers to present their activities and foster cooperation in the field of nanotechnology, focussing in the areas of electronics and energy. It would be very benefit for both countries to build scientific networks connecting scientists belonging to similar areas of nanotechnology. The respective strengths of the two nations (e.g. Quantum Computing, solar energy and water/air purification in Australia, semiconductors and optoelectronics in Italy) will be brought together, to create new synergies from which leading edge outcomes are expected. The 3 day workshop will be followed by a 2 day school on Nanotechnology, addressed to PhD and graduate students of all over Australia. Key topics will be for example: Materials, Semiconductor Nanostructures, Nanotubes, Conducting Polymers, Molecules, Applications, Quantum Computing, Nanoelectronic devices, Optoelectronics, Solar Cells, Water Purification, Nanoscale Integration, Nanofabrication Tools and Techniques. 18 Politecnico di Torino Double Australian-European Degrees in Science and Technology Lamberto Rondoni Il Politecnico di Torino sta avviando collaborazioni con università australiane che, in particolare, comprenderanno scambi di studenti di corsi di laurea, master e dottorato, a partire già dal prossimo anno accademico 2007/08. Sono allo studio programmi che portino al conseguimento di double degree, che verranno riconosciuti sia in Australia che in nell'unione Europea. Il Politecnico di Torino sta considerando la possibilità di facilitare l'inserimento in questi programmi degli studenti australiani di origine italiana. Si pensa di offrire corsi di lingua italiana a coloro che si iscriveranno ai diversi corsi di laurea o master o dottorato scelti. Gli studenti iscritti frequenteranno lezioni e laboratori sia in Australia, presso una università associata con il Politecnico di Torino, che a Torino (le lezioni presso il Politecnico di Torino saranno tenute in inglese). Diversi tipi di facilitazioni economiche sono allo studio. Attività sociali intese a familiarizzare gli studenti con la realtà italiana e con i luoghi delle loro origini verranno organizzate. Torino è una città geograficamente collocata in una regione ricca di storia, arte e tradizioni ed è collegata molto bene con tutte le capitali e le maggiori città europee (andare a Parigi in treno richiede circa 5 ore di treno, mentre bastano non più di 2 ore d'aereo per raggiungere qualsiasi altro luogo). 19 Politecnico di Torino Double Australian-European Degrees in Science and Technology Lamberto Rondoni The Politecnico di Torino is committed with Australian institutions to foster collaborations between Australian research and academic institutions and its own faculties and laboratories. In particular, exchanges of students, both at the undergraduate and graduate level, will begin in the next academic year. Programs which will lead to double degrees, awarded by the Politecnico di Torino and one associated Australian university, which will be acknowledged both in Australia and in the EU, are under consideration. The Politecnico di Torino is considering the possibility to help Australian students of Italian heritage to enroll in these programs. Those who will enroll will be given the possibility to attend full immersion Italian language courses for free, prior to the beginning of the classes. To earn their degrees, the students will attend part of the classes in the associated Australian university, and part at the Politecnico di Torino (classes will taught in English), for up to half of the program in Australia and half in Torino. Various kinds of financial support are under consideration. Social activities meant to bring the students in touch with their italian heritage will be favoured. Torino is geographically strategically placed, in a very charming region of Italy as well as of Europe, and is well connected with all European capitals and main cities (about 5 hours by train to Paris, and within 2 hours by plane from most other places). 20 XX Congresso Mondiale & Fiera Espositiva dell Energia Roma 2007 Il XX Congresso Mondiale & Fiera espositiva dell Energia è il più autorevole evento internazionale in campo energetico e si terrà per la prima volta in Italia a Roma presso la Nuova Fiera dall 11 al 15 novembre Questo appuntamento torna di nuovo in Europa dopo quindici anni. L evento è promosso la Consiglio Mondiale dell Energia (World Energy Council - WEC), la più importante organizzazione internazionale in campo energetico. Il WEC è un organizzazione non governativa accreditata presso l ONU con comitati nazionali in più di 90 paesi. La sua missione è promuovere lo sviluppo economico e l uso pacifico e sostenibile delle risorse energetiche. L obiettivo del World Energy Council è quello di monitorare lo status del settore energetico e trovare soluzioni che promuovano lo sviluppo economico dei paesi più industrializzati e in via di sviluppo. Inoltre, offrendo un valoroso contributo ai dinamici dibattiti in corso in tutto il mondo, il WEC stabilisce tabelle di marcia e modalità per assicurare un uso pacifico e sostenibile delle risorse energetiche a vantaggio dei popoli di tutto il mondo.
