5 Moole, origins Origins Moodle was the creation of Martin Dougiamas, a former WebCT administrator at Curtin University, with postgraduate degrees in Computer Science and Education. Martin's later Ph.D. studies examined "The use of Open Source software to support a social constructionist epistemology of teaching and learning within Internet-based communities of reflective inquiry" and this research has strongly influenced some of the design of Moodle, providing pedagogical aspects missing from many other e-learning platforms. 5/41

20 SCORM SCORM is a collection of standards and specifications adapted from multiple sources to provide a comprehensive suite of e-learning capabilities that enable interoperability, accessibility and reusability of Web-based learning content. Shareable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) is an XML-based framework used to define and access information about learning objects so they can be easily shared among different learning management systems (LMSs). SCORM was developed in response to a United States Department of Defense (DoD- AICC) initiative to promote standardization in e-learning. 20/41

24 SCORM 2004 Manifest SCORM rd Edition Manifest Basics Content Example (MBCE) Version 1.0 The Manifest Basics Content Example (MBCE) builds foundational knowledge on the key concepts that apply to a Manifest and the SCORM rd Edition. A Manifest is an extensible markup language (XML) document that contains a structured inventory of the contents of a package. The Manifest is also the place where content developers define the sequencing rules of the content. 24/41

25 Moodle, content types Assignment - Use this option to do one of three things: Offline assignment assumes the assessed activity happens offline but the teacher still grades it here so students can see their grade. Online text assignment allows students to enter their assignment online using the default text editor. Upload file assignment requires you to upload a file, teachers can then provide feedback and grades. Book - Use this option to set up indexed multi-page study material, which is ideal for presenting linear content (think PowerPoint). Chat - Use this option to allow participants to have a real-time synchronous discussion via the web. Choice - This option is very simple - the teacher asks a question and specifies a choice of multiple responses. It can be useful as a quick poll to stimulate thinking about a topic; to allow the class to vote on a direction for the course; or to gather research feedback. Dialogue - This option provides a simple communication method between pairs of users. A teacher can open an dialogue with a student, a student can open a dialogue with a teacher, and (optionally) a student can open a dialogue with another student. A teacher or student can be involved in many on-going dialogues at any time. Forum - This option is an online discussion among participants and teachers. Forums can be structured in different ways, and can include peer rating of each posting. The postings can be viewed in a variety for formats, and can include attachments. By subscribing to a forum, participants will receive copies of each new posting in their . A teacher can impose subscription on everyone if they want to. In addition, you can make a forum a graded activity. 25/41

26 Moodle, content types Glossary - This option allows teachers and participants to create and maintain a list of definitions, like say a dictionary of terms specific to course content (Fig. 21). The entries can be searched or browsed in many different formats. Journal - This option is a very important reflective activity. The teacher asks the student to reflect on a particular topic, and the student can edit and refine their answer over time. This answer is private and can only be seen by the teacher, who can offer feedback and a grade on each journal entry. Lesson - This option allows a series of pages to be entered. Each page can have a question at the end, and can lead to any other page. This module can create a series of pages which can be presented in a linear fashion, like a slide show, or in a non-linear, branching manner, or a combination of the two. It can be graded, with questions, or ungraded and used simply as a resource. Quiz - This option allows you to design and set quiz tests, consisting of multiple choice, true-false, and short answer questions. These questions are kept in a categorized database, and can be re-used within courses and even between courses. Random questions may be drawn from a question pool. Survey - The survey module can be used to conduct surveys of your students. Surveys can be anonymous, and you can limit survey responses to one time, or allow multiple responses. Wiki - The Moodle Wiki module enables participants to work together on web pages to add, expand and change the content. Old versions are never deleted and can be restored. opic=3 26/41

45 Web of Services (aka Web 2.0) TrackBack, PubSub and bi-directionalism on the web Bob Wyman, writing at As I May Think, has made the case for TrackBack's great significance in overcoming a major shortcoming of the web: TrackBack allows writers to build links from the blogs or items about which they write back to their comments. The technology exists in order to overcome a fundamental limitation of the web as we know it web links are uni-directional. Thus, while it is easy to link from your blog to an entry in another blog and thus easy for readers of your blog to navigate to the other blog, HTTP provides no way for readers of the other blog to discover your link to that blog. For someone to be able to "trackback" from an item in one blog to all the other blogs that refer to it requires either the use of a protocol like TrackBack or a service like PubSub.com that builds the "back links" automatically. This important posting goes on to make a number of points, including this about PubSub.com:... the ability to subscribe to "Referenced URI's" offered by PubSub.com allows blog owners to see *all* references to their blogs whether or not those who created the references were even aware of what TrackBack is. So, if you're trying to find out the full list of people who comment on your blog, the PubSub.com subscription is the best and easiest way to go. PubSub.com gives you "automated TrackBack" without requiring any work on the part of those who reference your site. You can even use our "automated TrackBack" to discover "trackbacks" to blogs that don't support TrackBack or to Web Sites, FTP files, etc.... It should be obvious that what we've done here is much more important than simply automating a feature of blogs. What we've done is enabled the construction of a two-way, bi-directional web of links between blogs and from blogs to other web resources identified by URI's. Although HTTP only supports unidirectional, one-way links, PubSub.com basically "patches" in the back-links automatically to construct a bi-directional web of links. If you'd like to see the full web of sites that link into your blog, or other URI, all you have to do is ask PubSub.com to collect the back-links for you. To do that, use our "Advanced" Subscription page and create a subscription to the "Referenced URI" of your choice. I would not have found Bob Wyman's posting had he not left a TrackBack to my earlier posting about... TrackBack. 45/41
