3 the leader / better place The founder of the Monaco yard talks about the challenges of the stunning 50-metre sailing yacht better place and explains the concept of wallycità (wally-icity) which includes quality of life aboard Luca Bassani as told to emilio martinelli The course set by Better Place in the world of yacht design isn t new because it s a route that Wally has followed since its foundation. That is, to create genuine sailing yachts. I believe it s also a sincere route: in recent years, certainly yachts have been marketed as sailing craft yet were anything but. However, with Better Place, which at 50 metres is the world s longest carbon-fibre sloop, the challenge was, once again, to build a really genuine sailing boat. This was at a time when hulls of 50, 60 metres and even larger, were out there claiming to be sailing yachts. While it s true they did have sails, to me they were more big motorsailers than anything else. Their ratios of weight to sail surface did not mark them out as sailing yachts. To give you an example, let s say that in a wind of under 15 knots they really struggle to make any progress under sail alone, while in winds of over 25 knots, they have to strike some sail because they start to heel so much due to the fact that their centres of gravity are very high. They are fake sailing yachts, albeit very comfortable ones. What we wanted to create, on the other hand, was a genuine 50-metre sailing yacht that would deliver the same comfort and amenities 11

4 our desire to create not just something different, but something better resulted in better place as these very motorsailers, yet still retain the characteristics of a sailer in terms of the relationship between displacement, sail area and length along the waterline. A 50-metre yacht that would be enjoyable and functional in all the different conditions one would normally use a sailing boat. Which means anywhere between 6 and 30 knots of wind. The Better Place design came into being about five years ago, but it took four years to build her. That s quite a lengthy construction time. Even with our previous experience of the 40-metre Angel s Share, the 43-metre Esense and the 45-metre Saudada, Better Place was something of a big jump for us. It wasn t so much because of the kinds of technical problems a hull of that kind poses, but more in terms of the design and creation of the diesel-electric propulsion system. Better Place is actually the first sailing yacht to use this system and both ourselves and the Siemens engineers worked on it for a long time. The latter even had to optimise their own systems for this installation. Apart from being more efficient, reducing fuel consumption, noise and vibration, the diesel-electric system allows you to convert certain hydraulic sail controls to electric via three generators (with a total output of 705 kw). Most significantly of all, Better Place won the RINA Green Star certification for the system and the many other green solutions aboard. I personally feel the Green Star is absolutely essential, even though energy-saving and environmental responsibility at sea are part of a broader theme. However, we have to start becoming committed here in the sailing yacht world: it s the only truly environmentally sustainable transportation method. Even though there s a lot of work needs doing in the motoryacht world too. We, for instance, are developing a propulsion system that s as hybrid as possible for the WallyAce, our displacement yacht. It is partly electric and will be good for proper passage-making, not little two or three hour hops. Sustainability, reduced fuel consumption, larger volumes and more comfort were the challenges with the WallyAce which makes 12 knots, but has a duel connection with the 118 WallyPower, the metre that delivered 60-plus-knots in all seas. In both instances, as with Better Place, we had the 12

Che significa anche vivibilità a bordo La rotta di Better Place nel mondo dello yacht design e dell innovazione non è nuova, perché è la rotta di Wally fin dalla nascita. Quella di realizzare vere barche a vela. Ma credo anche sia una rotta di sincerità: negli ultimi anni sono stati spacciati per barche a vela oggetti naviganti che tali non sono. Con Better Place, lungo 50 metri, il più grande sloop in carbonio al mondo, la sfida è stata, ancora una volta, quella di costruire una vera barca a vela. E questo nel momento in cui navigano scafi di 50 o 60 metri, e anche più grandi, dotati sì di vele, ma che ritengo essere solo grandi motorsailer. Il rapporto tra peso e superficie velica non le identifica infatti come barche a vela. La dimostrazione? Con vento sotto i 15 nodi faticano a navigare a vela e sopra i 25 nodi occorre ridurre tela in quanto sbandano moltissimo avendo un baricentro molto alto. Sono finte barche a vela, però molto comode. Quello che abbiamo voluto realizzare è invece un vero yacht a vela di 50 metri con gli stessi comfort di questi motorsailer, ma con le caratteristiche proprie di un imbarcazione a vela nei rapporti tra dislocamento, superficie velica e lunghezze delle linee d acqua. Uno yacht di 50 metri che fosse godibile in tutte le condizioni nelle quali normalmente si naviga con una barca a vela. Diciamo da 6 nodi a 30 nodi di vento. Un progetto, quello di Better Place, nato circa cinque anni fa e che ha richiesto quattro anni per la costruzione. Un tempo abbastanza lungo. Anche con l esperienza di Angel s Share di 40 metri, di Esense di 43 metri e di Saudade di 45 13

6 The slogan fast and easy sailing embodies a concept that is also at the heart of this 50-metre desire to create not just something different but something better. That approach has been called Wallycità (Wally-icity) and Better Place, aside from being a genuine fast and easy sailing yacht, is also a Wally in terms of her onboard liveability. Starting with the space available on all her decks which from the cockpit to the foredeck to the flybridge area are very clean with lots of liveable spaces and no annoying and dangerous sail controls getting in the way. In the interior, the saloon has full-height windows which do away with the feeling of being in a deckhouse you feel like you re outside under a bimini top. That s one major difference between her and other sailing yachts. Then in the owner s stateroom, which has glass doors opening on to the stern terrace and enormous portholes in its walls, you are really close to the sea and never far away from it. That s a very Wally approach. Most importantly, in terms of style and feel, you always know you are on a sailing yacht. Non tanto per i problemi tecnici che pone uno scafo del genere, ma per la progettazione e la realizzazione del sistema di propulsione diesel-elettrico. Better Place è infatti il primo yacht a vela che utilizza questo sistema che ha imposto un lungo lavoro a noi e agli ingegneri di Siemens, i quali hanno dovuto ottimizzare i loro sistemi per questa installazione. Oltre a conferire una maggiore efficienza, a ridurre i consumi, il rumore e le vibrazioni, il dieselelettrico permette, grazie ai tre generatori (per complessivi 705 kw) di convertire alcuni sistemi idraulici di manovra in elettrici. Ma soprattutto il diesel-elettrico, assieme a tutte le altre soluzioni eco di bordo, ha permesso a Better Place di ottenere la Green Star dal Rina. Una certificazione che ritengo obbligatoria anche se il risparmio energetico e il rispetto ambientale in mare fanno parte di una tematica più generale. Ma occorre cominciare e impegnarsi in particolare nel mondo delle barche a vela: unico mezzo di trasporto ecosostenibile al mondo. Anche se c è molto da fare nel motore. Noi, per esempio, su WallyAce, la nostra navetta, stiamo studiando un sistema di propulsione più ibrido possibile, in gran parte elettrico e che permetta vere navigazioni e non autonomie di due o tre ore. L ecosostenibilità, i consumi ridotti, la ricerca di maggiori volumi e di maggior comfort sono gli elementi della sfida di WallyAce che naviga a 12 nodi, ma che è legata a doppio filo con il 118 WallyPower, il 36 metri varato nel 2003 capace di oltre 60 nodi con ogni mare. In entrambi i casi, così come per Better Place, si tratta della nostra volontà di presentare qualcosa non semplicemente di diverso, ma di migliore. È stata definita Wallycità e Better Place, oltre agli aspetti legati al suo essere un vero yacht a vela per prestazioni e facilità di manovra, nel solco di quel fast and easy che ritengo sia un valido slogan per definirci, è un Wally anche dal punto di vista della vivibilità a bordo. A cominciare dagli spazi sui vari ponti che, dal pozzetto a quello di prua, al flybridge, sono tutti molto puliti, con molti spazi abitabili, senza manovre che diano noia o creino pericolo. All interno del salone le vetrate a tutta altezza cancellano la sensazione di essere dentro una tuga: è come essere all aperto, sotto un bimini. E questa è una grande differenza rispetto ad altre barche a vela. Poi, nella cabina armatoriale, con la vetrata della terrazza di poppa e gli enormi oblò sulle murate, si è vicinissimi al mare e non ci si allontana mai da questo elemento. E questa è un impostazione molto Wally. Soprattutto, come stile e come sensazione, si è sempre su una barca a vela. Better Place è 15

Right now, we have the 50-metre Better Place, but we re already working on an even more comfortable 66-metre design with a very different kind of line, so it s not just a bigger boat. But we re also ready to take on a 100-metre. That wouldn t be a yacht to tackle using a conventional approach, you would have to have the courage to come up with new ideas that would replace old ones, just as we did with Better Place, which brought us to the famous Wallycità. A search for speed and easy sailing that s also safe. And then, without it being my main goal, we had the stylistic side. By attempting to create fast, simple boats, we created the Wally style. 10 We had worked closely with Luca Bassani on a great number of other projects in the past (building the WallyPower 118, and interior design for the WallyPower 64 and 70). Thanks to our knowledge and empathy with the Wally DNA and philosophy, Luca didn t hesitate to recommend us to the owner, who is highly intelligent, questions standard assumptions to check they are correct and is a pleasure to work with. The owner also briefed Wetzels Brown Partners to create a really special yacht that would take the Wally concept for outdoor living on sailing yachts to the next generation. The idea was to keep the sporty style of a Wally sailing yacht, but to add to it the luxury and comfort an owner requires on a megayacht. Our job was to push boundaries, question requirements and provide a framework for a relaxed onboard lifethe leader / better place with a philosophy of developing the Wally dna to the next generation and a particular focus on Wetzels Brown outdoor living, the studio has made better place an innovative example of understated luxury Partners by Gillian Brown as told to Désirée Sormani 19

One of the key qualities of the yacht was the connection between the outside and inside space, so the interior design had to retain and enhance that. How did we manage to fulfil the owner s wishes? By following our own philosophy, which was to encapsulate the ideas that are the DNA of a Wally and take them to the next level in this large yacht. Design cannot be expanded to fit a bigger yacht you have to add layers of detailing and larger architectural gestures to structure the layout of the interior. We wanted to connect all three deck levels and add all the living and storage functions in a way that continued the spirit of the exterior design into the interior. For example, the saloon is almost a winter garden placed over the main deck: it is not an interior space at all. Our approach to sailing yacht interior design is that you should always feel in touch with the sea, see that you are on a yacht (the hull shape is visible throughout) and have a different experience from being on land. This may sound obvious, but with yachts getting bigger, stabilisers getting better, and the carpets, marble and refined joinery of some yachts, you could be forgiven for forgetting you are afloat! Because we are trained and experienced in land architecture and commercial interior design, we approach each project from a branding perspective with a clear arrangement of space and functions. Each design decision is part of the overall concept and not about the decoration of different spaces. We have worked with Wally for over 10 years and also with other shipyards so we have developed a deep knowledge of the detailing of understated luxury. We focused on flexibility of use throughout: the saloon coffee table converts into a dining table for 8, the navigation area converts into dining for 10, the sundeck dining table converts into a sun Below: an example of the modular furniture. Abbiamo lavorato gomito a gomito con Luca innumerevoli volte (sulla costruzione del WallyPower 118, e sugli interni del WallyPower 64 e del 70) e in modo così empatico che abbiamo fatto nostro il DNA e la filosofia Wally. Per questo non ha esitato a raccomandarci all armatore, uomo intelligente, propositivo e curioso, persona ideale con cui lavorare. Il suo brief era preciso: voleva uno yacht speciale per viverlo all aria aperta secondo i parametri di generazioni future, mantenendo al contempo lo stile sportivo di un veliero Wally ma aggiungendo il lusso e il comfort di un megayacht. Il risultato doveva spingersi oltre i confini dell immaginabile, senza compromessi al relax, mantenendo ben presente la chiave di lettura di questo progetto, la relazione esterno/ interno, che doveva essere esaltata al massimo. 13 We wanted to show the shape and length of the yacht. you should feel in touch with the sea bed, the lounge in the owner cabin can also be used as a bed on the portside for long crossings, the crew dining table folds to convert into a lounge area and with furniture in the same finishes both internally and externally. We also created flexibility in the tableware, which coordinates in many combinations from unbreakable deck lunch settings (Mario Luca Giusti, Whitbread Wilkinson, Mebel Italia) for the sundeck, to crystal and porcelain for fine dining and cocktail parties (from collections by Baccarat, Christofle, Hermés, Alessi and others). One of the underlying guidelines for the whole project was to minimise weight: we sought to create good solutions that were both functional and light in all aspects of the design. The deck furnishings have carbon frames and the sundeck dining table lowers with the addition of an inflatable mattress, it converts into one enormous sun bed. Colour is a very important aspect of this yacht too: Bugatti blue is continued from the exterior concept into the owner s loft with raspberry, black and ice green in the guest cabins and calming sky blue in the crew areas. The greatest challenge, however, was space. No matter how large a yacht is there is always a limited space to fit in all the 22

An example is that in the 86-square-metre main saloon we have no solid walls and the central storage/pantry unit needed to maintain openings to give the vision through it, yet at the same time hide the structural supports, audio-visual racks and airconditioning outlets, yet still house fridges space, ice-maker and waste bin, coffee machine, sink and storage of glasses quite a challenge! And this was before finding the space for 20 fine china and glassware place settings. The challenge was also to invent storage space for the growing Main picture: the owner s suite. Semplicemente seguendo la nostra filosofia: incapsulare le idee che formano il DNA di un Wally portandole al livello richiesto per creare un grande yacht come questo. Il design non può essere espanso come un elastico a seconda della dimensione di uno yacht; bisogna aggiungere maggiori dettagli ed elementi architettonici per strutturare il layout d interni di una barca più grande. Volevamo creare un collegamento fra i tre differenti ponti e aggiungere tutte le fruizioni dello spazio vivibile e di contenimento in modo da portare lo spirito del design degli esterni anche all interno. Per esempio, il salone nella deckhouse è una specie di giardino d inverno, non è affatto uno spazio interno. Essendo a bordo di una barca a vela, volevamo mettere in mostra la forma e la lunghezza di questo yacht, far sentire il contatto con il mare, esaltare il concetto di essere a bordo di una barca (la forma dello scafo è visibile ovunque) e sottolineare la diversa esperienza dell essere a terra. Ciò può sembrare ovvio, ma con gli accorgimenti usati sui grandi yacht (stabilizzatori, moquette, marmi ecc.), spesso ci si dimentica di essere su un oggetto galleggiante. Dalla nostra esperienza nel residenziale abbiamo preso il metodo, un approccio che considera l insieme dello spazio e delle funzioni e non la mera decorazione di ambienti singoli e differenti. Abbiamo lavorato insieme a Wally per 10 anni (oltre ad altri cantieri) e questo ha sviluppato in noi una certa capacità nel considerare il dettaglio di un lusso dimesso senza esagerazioni. Ovunque abbiamo pensato alla flessibilità di fruizione: il coffee table del salone si trasforma all occorrenza in un tavolo per otto commensali, la zona navigazione si converte in area pranzo da 10, il tavolo da pranzo del sundeck diventa un prendisole, il salottino della cabina armatoriale può essere usato come letto di sinistra nelle lunghe navigazioni, il tavolino nella crew mess si piega e l area diventa una lounge per l equipaggio; i mobili poi hanno tutti le stesse finiture, internamente come esternamente, cosicché la stessa sedia può essere messa in qualsiasi ambiente. Abbiamo pensato che la flessibilità dovesse riguardare anche i servizi da tavola, le porcellane e i cristalli (selezionati tra le collezioni di Baccarat, Christofle, Hermés, Alessi, tanto per citarne alcune), per poterli usare ovunque. Il colore poi è uno degli aspetti focali di questo yacht: il blu Bugatti dall esterno si ripete nel loft armatoriale, lampone, nero e verde ghiaccio nelle cabine ospiti, nero e azzurro cielo nell area equipaggio. 23

Che a bordo non è mai abbastanza» list of technical requirements, medical supplies, lifesaving equipment and other essential items during the build while minimising the impact on guest comfort. Innovative details include the teak decking and exterior upholstery which continue from outside to inside on the main deck, so it really does function as one space. The saloon has full-height windows on all sides. The food lift is a suitcase that travels up a carbon pole a first on a yacht. TVs in the ceilings of the cabins can project art or rotate for viewing in bed. However, most impressive of all is the fact that we ve created a streamlined interior without excessive ornament or accessories that not only fits in with weight-saving principles but also the Wally philosophy of creating refined, state-of-the-art luxury. La sfida più grande nell affrontare questo progetto è stato lo spazio. Che a bordo non è mai abbastanza, nonostante in questo caso le dimensioni siano generose, per inserire tutto ciò che è necessario e che aumenta in proporzione alla lunghezza di uno yacht. Un esempio? Negli 86 metri quadrati di salone è stata una vera sfida il riuscire a nascondere il sistema d aria condizionata, quello audio-visivo, l icemaker e i bidoni della spazzatura in uno spazio senza muri solidi e con una pantry centrale dove la visuale doveva essere mantenuta libera. E tutto ciò anche prima di trovare spazio per i migliori servizi da tavola per 20 persone. La nostra esperienza in campo residenziale è emersa proprio nella capacità di inventare la maggior parte di luoghi possibili dove sistemare le apparecchiature tecniche, medicali e di sicurezza senza sacrificare il comfort degli ospiti. A bordo ci sono dettagli innovativi: il teak della coperta è un continuum così come le tappezzerie interne ed esterne; le vetrate a tutta altezza danno una sensazione di spazio proiettato all esterno, racchiuso dalle alte impavesate; il portavivande (inedito) è una valigia che viaggia lungo una barra; le Tv scendono dal cielino delle cabine e possono proiettare anche opere d arte o cambiare angolazione per vederle da sdraiati. Ma è soprattutto la semplicità senza eccessi e inutili orpelli che stupisce, perfettamente in linea con la filosofia Wally. E che conferisce al concetto di lusso un nuovo e pregnante significato. 24

18 the full-height deckhouse windows emphasise the inside/outside link that is a feature of wally Stepping aboard a Wally is a little like walking through a stargate as one really does feel instantly transported to another dimension. Better Place, the latest creature to sport the visionary stamp of the great Luca Bassani, certainly lives up to that reputation. Her interiors are by Wetzels Brown Partners and the naval architecture is by Tripp Design. Having splashed in spring 2012, the 50-metre is the largest carbon-fibre sloop in the world and hails a whole new era in terms of innovation. Her long, sleek, striking lines have a slight aggressive edge that only truly high performance yachts possess. The whole effect is underscored by a Bugatti blue livery commissioned by the owner. It was our task to develop an interior colour scheme to complement the exterior, says designer Gillian Brown. As we knew the owner enjoyed Apple products, we took our inspiration from the ipod colours. Both the strong colour and the Apple philosophy of purity in design complemented the spirit of this project. Wally chairman and founder Luca Bassani adds: Better Place introduces new concepts. These include the linking of large volumes with weightsavings, full-height windows which enhance the signature Wally insideoutside discourse and raised bulwarks. Weight distribution is perfect too: a 250-ton displacement (88 of which is ballast and spread between fin and bulb) and 11.5 tons for the rigging. This, combined with superb construction materials, a rational sail plan that delivers even in winds of under 10 knots, and push-button sail controls, make her a megasailer that s really quite easy to handle. As if this were not enough, Better Place was also designed to be as green and sustainable as possible and thus features new generation diesel electric propulsion. In fact, she is the very first sailing yacht ever to have been awarded a Green Star rating by RINA. E in fatto di innovazione apre una nuova era Salire a bordo di un Wally è come immaginare di passare lo Stargate: si è sicuri di varcare una dimensione diversa. E Better Place, ultima creatura che porta le firme di quel visionario di Luca Bassani (sempre presente nella fase progettuale), dello studio Wetzels Brown Partners per gli interni e di Tripp Design per l architettura navale, non delude certo le aspettative. Anzi. Questo 50 metri, che ha toccato l acqua nella primavera del 2012, è infatti il più grande sloop al mondo costruito in fibra di carbonio, e in fatto di innovazione apre una nuova era. A partire dalle linee esterne, allungate e un po aggressive come solo una barca a vela dalle grandi performance può avere, sottolineate da una livrea blu Bugatti voluta dall armatore. «Per gli interni è stato nostro il compito di cercare il colore giusto», precisa Gillian Brown, «e per farlo abbiamo tratto ispirazione dai colori dell ipod, conoscendo la passione del proprietario per i prodotti e la filosofia Apple, la cui purezza del design ben si complementa con lo spirito di questo progetto. «Better Place introduce concetti nuovi», sottolinea Luca Bassani, fondatore e presidente di Wally, «tra questi l associazione tra grandi volumi e contenimento di pesi, vetrate a tutta altezza che esaltano il già confermato discorso in/out tipico di Wally, le falchette rialzate.
