In corrispondenza della loro confluenza, si assiste a un ampia trasformazione urbana: abitazioni, negozi, uffici e attività culturali stanno progressivamente rimpiazzando gli stabilimenti industriali che caratterizzavano Il porto. Il Musée des Confluences di Coop Himmelb(l)au fa parte di questo processo di riconversione, di cui rappresenta una delle centralità per collocazione e programma funzionale. Vincitore di un concorso indetto nel 2001 e cantierizzato a partire dal 2010, il progetto si sviluppa sull ultimo istmo di terra che divide i due fiumi, una stretta penisola triangolare. Pensato come museo di tecnologia, biologia ed etica, il Musée des Confluences, più che contenitore di oggetti, aspira a essere luogo dove esperire la conoscenza, rendendola accessibile e comprensibile a tutti. Il progetto prende forma a partire da una duplice tensione: da una parte tra città e natura, dall altra tra esperienza e conoscenza. Questa doppia relazione si traduce in un volume sospeso su un basamento e articolato in due elementi: il cristallo e la nuvola. La scelta di sollevarlo da terra ha l obiettivo sia di lasciare libera la visuale dalla città verso il fiume, sia di creare uno spazio pubblico coperto, ponte d incontro tra scienza e società. L area posta tra le sponde dei fiumi e l architettura sospesa si compone di una serie di rampe e livelli che annullano e frammentano le differenti quote in una sequenza dinamica di eventi spaziali. Il basamento, con i suoi auditorium, gli archivi e i laboratori, diventa parte del paesaggio materico e sfaccettato del terreno, sopra cui si elevano il cristallo e la nuvola. Verso la città, il cristallo, composto da superfici vetrate inclinate, accoglie i visitatori all interno di un foyer pubblico che permette l accesso alle esposizioni e alle attività del museo, serbate all interno della nuvola. Sotto una scocca metallica si distribuiscono su cinque livelli sale espositive, atelier, uffici e spazi per la ristorazione, collegati da un sistema di connessioni fluido e senza soluzione di continuità. Il concetto di conoscenza si concretizza attraverso l uso di materiali e tecnologie contemporanei e una struttura estremamente complessa che permette l apparente sospensione del volume. Ma non solo. La ricchezza e l articolazione degli spazi pubblici e di connessione tra le sale espositive comunicano l idea di un sapere non più settoriale, ma che si evolve nelle aree ibride, sfocate, sovrapposte, cui l architettura dà forma attraverso la penetrazione, la deformazione e la mutevolezza. Caterina Testa The French city of Lyon has been shaped by the rivers Rhône and Saône, which course through it. Once a bustling industrial port, the seedy neighbourhood on the peninsula formed at the confluence of the rivers is now in the process of becoming a new residential, retail and business district. Designed by Coop Himmelb(l)au, the aptly named Musée des Confluences is a central feature of the revitalization process on account of its location on the triangular isthmus of land between the two rivers, and for its functional programme. The project was adjudicated the contract in 2001 but construction started only in Conceived as a museum of technology, biology and ethics, the building aims to be more than a mere container of exhibits, rather a place for experiencing knowledge where information is made accessible to a broad public audience. The programme is posited on a dual tension: between the city and nature, on the one hand, and between experience and knowledge, on the other. This dual relationship is given material form in a building raised above the ground and made up of two components: a crystal and a cloud. Raising the building off the ground allows unobstructed views and access from the city to the river. It also creates a covered public space, an ideal bridge linking science and society. The area between the riverbanks and around the hovering architecture has a series of ramps and slopes that dissolve the natural gradient and create a dynamic sequence of spatial events. The building s podium, above which the crystal and cloud hover, houses auditoriums, archives and laboratories and is an imposing multi-facetted part of the landscape. Facing the city, the crystal - a multifaceted glazed volume - welcomes visitors into a huge public foyer leading to the exhibition and activity areas of the museum proper located inside the cloud. A metal carapace-like roof protects five exhibition levels, workshops, offices and catering facilities all connected by a continuous-flow circulation system. The extremely complex structural frame makes the building appear suspended in mid-air. Here, state-of-the-art technology and materials give tangible form to the very concept of knowledge - knowledge that today is no longer sectoral but developed in hybrid areas where lines of demarcation have become blurred. This is given material expression with the variety and articulation of the public and exhibition spaces linked by a seamless distribution system in an architecture whose hallmark is penetration, deformation and changeability.
