6 THE CLUSTERS: AN INNOVATIVE MODEL OF PARTICIPATION Expo Milano 2015 has been conceptualized with the ambition to bring the evolution of Universal Exhibitions one step further: an Expo where every program and project is developed putting the visitor experience at the center of the stage, and where the Theme is perceivable in every element of the Exposition, experienced from the very first step inside the site and in every interaction. This radical change of paradigm is particularly evident in the Cluster project. Traditionally the Countries unwilling or unable to participate in the Expositions building their own pavilion were grouped by the organizers under common structures, the joint pavilions, where the single Countries maintained inside an individual space to showcase themselves. Moreover the criteria for grouping Countries under the same joint pavilion have so far been geographical. Continental joint pavilions for Africa, Asia and South America were put in place, or others for significant regional territories and identities. However the idea behind Expo Milano 2015 is to address the theme in every element and in every project. Why not grouping Countries on a thematic basis, rather than geographical, then? Expo Milano 2015 has developed a participation model that allows Countries to select the solution that best suits their needs and projects. While maintaining the successful key elements of the tradition of Universal Expos, allowing many Countries to participate TITOLO PROGETTO

7 with their own sensibility and contribution, Expo Milano 2015 will introduce a significant innovation to the type of exhibition spaces and their placement. Countries will not be grouped according to a geographic principle but according to elements of the Expo theme Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life. Working together with the Organizer in developing a common thematic exhibition area, Countries will also retain their identity by creating their own unique exhibition space. Furthermore this solution will allow Countries from different regions and continents to collaborate together, overcoming the traditional geographical divisions of the Exhibition Areas of Expos and therefore enhancing the Universal character of Expo Milano The Clusters area will be located across the whole site, enhancing the potential dialogue with other elements like thematic areas and other Countries autonomous pavilions. Corporate organizations, local authorities, international organizations and civil society can all offer their contribution in terms of events, exhibitions, funding and supporting, catering and commercial activities. Local authorities are already collaborating in the Clusters development with their interest in developing offsite touristic itineraries in the territories that have a strong connection with the theme of the Cluster. Also the private sector will be asked to come on board and support the development of Cluster project, both financially, as well as in terms of content. Lastly International organisations are being involved by participating in the Clusters development and by contributing to the thematic elaboration, offering scientific contributions and contents. 10 GENERAL INTRODUCTION The work within the workshop began with a reflection on the concept of coffee as a theme in which the aspects of multiplicity, the variety of meaning, historical, social and geopolitical issues go far beyond the complex and even fascinating image of the drink that we all know in the world. The approach to the problem through the interpretations of various disciplines, economy, culture and history, made it possible to investigate the diffusion of coffee almost outlining a different history of the world. With this in mind we wanted to see the cluster not only as a simple aggregation of national pavilions, but as a unitary form that represents the world of coffee. It has been the search for an architectural form that can represent this multiplicity not as a metaphor, but rather as a system of public spaces that constitute the core of the cluster. This approach is born naturally in the discussion between teachers and students and has to life in no time at three project ideas that have appeared worthy of being developed and deepened. The three concepts outlined different spatial solutions and offer the opportunity to draw visitor experiences rich and complex for the public that we can summarize with the following key concepts. The Coffee in the Forest The nature origins in space fascinating, magical cover of foliage under which the coffee plants grow and mature. The image results in an architecture of roofing fragmented, of articulated and different spaces that overlook the pavilions linked by a bond borrowed from nature The Coffee Passage Coffee, culture and form of the city are linked intrinsically by urban experience in different continents. The project hypothesis proposes a passage along which visitors live the history of coffee The Gardens of Coffee The geometry of the crops suggests a system in which pavilions and gardens lead the audience in the fascinating story of the transformation of coffee from plant to drink. 11 Il lavoro all interno del workshop e iniziato con una riflessione sul concetto di caffe come tema nel quale gli aspetti di molteplicita, di varieta di significati, di vicende storiche, sociali e geopolitiche vanno molto al di la della pur complessa e affascinante immagine della bevanda che tutti conoscono nel mondo. L approccio al problema attraverso le chiavi di lettura di varie discipline, dell economia, della cultura e della storia, ha permesso di indagare la diffusione del caffe quasi tratteggiando una diversa storia del mondo. Partendo da questa considerazione abbiamo voluto vedere il cluster non come una semplice aggregazione di padiglioni nazionali, ma come una forma unitaria che rappresenti il mondo del caffe. Ne e nata la ricerca di una forma architettonica in grado di rappresentare questa molteplicita non come una metafora, ma bensi come un sistema di spazi pubblici che costituisca il cuore del cluster. Questo approccio e nato naturalmente nella discussione fra docenti e studenti e ha dato vita in pochissimo tempo a tre ipotesi progettuali che sono apparse meritevoli di essere sviluppate e approfondite. I tre concetti delineano differenti soluzioni spaziali e offrono l opportunita di disegnare esperienze di visita ricche e complesse per il pubblico che possiamo riassumere nei seguenti concetti chiave. INTRODUZIONE GENERALE The Coffee in the Forest La natura da origine a spazi affascinanti, magiche coperture di fronde sotto alle quali le piante del caffe crescono e maturano. L immagine si traduce in un architettura di coperture frammentate, di spazi articolati e differenti sui quali si affacciano i padiglioni legati da un legame mutuato dalla natura The Coffee Passage Caffe, cultura e forma della citta si legano intrinsecamente nell esperienza urbana nei vari continenti. L ipotesi progettuale propone un passage lungo il quale i visitatori vivono la storia del caffe The Gardens of Coffee La geometria delle coltivazioni suggerisce un impianto nel quale padiglioni e giardini conducono il pubblico nell affascinante storia della trasformazione del caffe da pianta a bevanda. 14 The traditional way to cultivate coffee under the shade of tropical rainforests in Central America and Africa is the basic concept of the project: the cover, which recalls the treetops, stand above the pavilions that are the metaphor of the trunks. The canopy, developed on three levels, allow the light penetrate with different intensities, resulting in changing spatiality. The path dominated by vegetation, offers the opportunity to expose and taste coffee in its many features: history, quality, production and culture. La tradizionale tecnica di coltivazione del caffè all ombra delle foreste pluviali in America Centrale e in Africa è la base del concept: la copertura richiama le chiome degli alberi e sovrasta i padiglioni, metafora dei tronchi. Il pergolato su tre livelli fa penetrare la luce con intensità differenti, ottenendo spazialità mutevoli. Il percorso, dominato dalla vegetazione, offre occasione per esporre e degustare il caffè nelle sue molteplici caratteristiche: storia, qualità, produzione e cultura. THE COFFEE IN THE FOREST

24 The various declination of variety, production and consumption of coffee is translate in architectural form through the definition of a space in continuous transformation. The sequence of the structural element, the portal, defines the generator lines of a virtual volume, that interprets the relation between inside and outside. The result is a composite and permeable system, made about two elements, that confront their-self defining a central axis, the passage, place for condivision and experience of the coffee world. Il caffè nella sue molteplici declinazioni di varietà, produzione e consumo è tradotto in forma architettonica attraverso la definizione di uno spazio in continua trasformazione. La sequenza dell elemento strutturale, il portale, definisce le linee generatrici di un volume virtuale, che interpreta la relazione tra interno ed esterno. Il risultato è un sistema composito e permeabile, formato da due corpi, che si confrontano definendo un asse centrale, passage, luogo per la condivisione e l esperienza del mondo del caffè. 25 The multiple character of coffee is transfered in architectural form with the creation of a space in continue transformation that, starting from the use of a simple structural element, the portal, tells the story of coffee in a tematic and spatial progression. The result is the creation of a permeable, variable and composite system, in which the structural skin unites different pavillion s identities into the same coffee world, and organizes tematic outdoor public spaces to expose, taste and share the product. The suggested structural succession, has the main role to generate spaces that develop in a passage. Punctual and diversified events are articulated from the public central space and take part in the creation of a way in cointinue discovery. that shows the different themes of coffee. The esploration of different way to cultivate, product and prepare this raw material guide to the final act of condivision. The coffee space transform itself in a place to live, able to welcome, giude and surprise. Il molteplice carattere del caffè si trasferisce in forma architettonica attraverso la creazione di uno spazio in continua trasformazione, che a partire dall utilizzo di un semplice elemento strutturale, il portale, racconta la storia del caffè secondo una progressione tematica e spaziale. Il risultato è la creazione di un sistema composito, variabile e permeabile, in cui il rivestimento strutturale riunisce le differenti identità dei padiglioni all interno dello stesso mondo del caffè e organizza spazi pubblici tematici ed esterni per esporre, sperimentare e condividere. La successione di elementi proposta ha come ruolo primario la generazione di spazi che si traducono in un passage. Dallo spazio pubblico centrale, si articolano episodi puntuali differenziati che partecipano alla creazione di un percorso di continua scoperta, che svela le diverse tematiche del caffè. E attraverso l esplorazione dei diversi modi di coltivazione, produzione e preparazione di questa materia prima che si giunge al rito finale di condivisione. Lo spazio del caffè diventa quindi in un luogo da vivere, in grado di accogliere, guidare e coinvolgere, stupendo, i visitatori. CLUSTER INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP COFFEE 22/23

34 The complex life of coffee, from the hard to the liquid state, its multiplicity and cultivation technique are translated into an architecture organized on a grid, introducing a concept of three levels of the cluster area: the coffee orchard/ plantations/smell/touch; the producing countries/story/experience: the public area/ taste/buy/events. Rythmic composition welcomes the visitors to come in, giving equal democratic position to each country exhibited, no front or back façade. The country names are visible in perspective from the Decumano. The ground carries a gradient colour of types of soil ideally found in these countries. THE GARDENS OF COFFEE

35 Il processo di produzione del caffé, dallo stato solido a quello liquido, e la sua varietà e tecnica di coltivazione sono trasferite in un architettura organizzata da una griglia che suddivide l area del cluster in tre livelli: il giardino del caffé, dove si trovano le piante e si può sperimentare il prodotto del caffé attraverso l odore e il tatto; l area interna privata dei padiglioni, dove essi espongono la propria storia di produzione; l area pubblica comune, dove i visitatori possono sperimentare gusti di caffé, comprare prodotti derivati e assistere agli eventi. La composizione ritmica accoglie i visitatori e garantisce una posizione equa e democratica ad ogni padiglione, il quale riporta sulla facciata principale il nome del Paese corrispondente.
