RECCOMMENDED: AN Italian Dictionary (Langensheidt OR Oxford OR Cassells) [Purchase one in paper format] Course Objectives This advanced-level Italian course, which meets five days a week, continues to develop the skills and to build on the work done in your first four or five semesters of Italian (or equivalent) with a particular focus on reading and writing. We will emphasize aspects of Italian history and society from the medieval period to the present by focusing on the theme of identity and belonging in Italian literature. This course also includes the review, study and practice of many grammar topics to further develop and refine your ability to use fundamental structures of Italian language in all sorts of communicative contexts. Italian history and culture are interesting and stimulating, but also very challenging and demanding. On this basis, you are required to always keep up with the study and with the daily homework. Attendance, participation and dedication are the primary elements to succeed in this course. If you study independently and attend class regularly, by the end of M301 you will be able: 1) to read, comprehend, analyze, and interpret advanced-level Italian texts from a variety of sources regarding the theme of identity and belonging from the Middle Ages to the present. You will be able to identify and use summaries and quotes from a reading to support your arguments; 2) to write coherent advanced-level analytical essays (including thesis, arguments and conclusion) on Italian literature, history and society, supporting your arguments with secondary sources; 3) to present, describe, analyze, and discuss different aspects of Italian literature, history and culture by comparing it to other cultures and expressing your opinion; Syllabus

8 Grading Guidelines for Italian M301 Participation and Preparation 10% Chapter Quizzes (3+3) 6x5 30% Critical Papers 3x20 60% 100% Final Numeric Grade Average A A A B B B C C C D D D- 59 & below F Important policies 1) Attendance - Unexcused absences. Students are allowed 4 unexcused absences. What do you think? BUT we would prefer that you had none. Daily upkeep and contributions count for a lot in this class. *Each additional absence after 4 unless excused (e.g., illness when accompanied by a medical note, family emergency, etc.), will lower your final grade by 2%. If you miss a class it is your responsibility to obtain homework assignments and notes from classmates! 2) Classroom Citizenship & Participation: Very good to excellent participation involves regular attendance but also making a concerted effort to partake in activities, using Italian to the best of your ability, and attempting to volunteer in class. Though participation in one cultural/cocurricular event is part of your course assignments, additional attendance at these events can increase your participation grade further. 3) Google Translator or any similar translation tools (human or electronic source) are NOT PERMITTED for any aspect of our courses and any evidence that they have been used will be considered an infraction of the University Honesty Policy (resulting in a 0 for the assignment and formal university consequences). Please do not even attempt this. It s just not worth it.

9 4) Cutting and Pasting from any website without proper bibliographical citation even a two- or three-word phrase is considered plagiarism. Please do not even attempt this; it too will be considered an infraction of the University Honesty Policy. See your teacher right away if you have difficulty expressing in Italian what you would like to say in your componimenti or presentazioni. 5) Phones: You can be smart without a smart phone. The use of smart phones (or any other phones) in class is strictly forbidden. All your texts or calls or social media can wait 50 minutes. Assignments and Assessments 1) Writing Assignments: Your goal for the semester is to learn to write critical papers in Italian. Your instructor will provide you with a detailed description of this component of your grade. 2) Quizzes: you will have 6 quizzes; three of them will regard content and three grammar.. 3) In-Class Participation: In-class participation is absolutely fundamental to your success in this class. Each student is expected to share with the class both questions answered for homework and in-class analytical questions on a daily basis. We are all here to share our thoughts and learn from each other; don t be shy!
