Eckert Office Hour: Tuesday 11:30-12:30 e.mail: eeckert@umbra.org Prerequisite: Placement Exam. All students will take a short test the last day of the first week of the semester. This exam is used solely for the purpose of placing students in the most suitable 110 section. Course Materials: Required Text: - a Course Reader that contains the materials to be covered in the course will be made available. - A. Rossi-M.G. Socci Grammar Notes for English-speaking students.le Monnier Editore; Supplementary Text: selected exercises and readings from various textbooks and workbooks will be handed out periodically. Dictionary: students are strongly recommended to purchase an English/Italian, Italian/English dictionary. The library also has a number of dictionaries available for consultation. Course Structure: One week of intensive language instruction (20 contact hours) 12 regularly scheduled weeks in which the class meets 6 hours per week Course Description: Perugia is a wonderful laboratory for learning the Italian language, and the structure of the Italian language program reflects this urban reality. The first week of intensive language instruction immerses the student in the Italian language and culture, and introduces them to local routines and life in Perugia, where the opportunity to use the language abounds. This immersion further orients the students to studying Italian in Italy, where the communicative approach with Italian only in classroom is practiced in full. Lastly, the week sets the rules and rhythm for the semester and helps to instill an enthusiasm for the Italian language and culture. The specific goals of the introductory course is to give students a basic lexicon to interact with everyday life, events and of their new host country, while at the same time teaching them the key building blocks of Italian grammar. The central objectives are therefore to provide students with the necessary tools by which they can engage little by little with the local community in a meaningful way, and to stimulate students to observe and reflect upon various

2 aspects of the new culture surrounding them. Course will include exercises and homework assignments to develop and improve grammatical knowledge; reading and listening ; and games, role-playing, and interviewing in both pairs and groups both within and outside the classroom. Course Outcomes and Objectives: At the end of the semester, students should reach the level A2+ of the Common European Framework in the four basic competencies: listening, speaking and interacting, reading, and writing. In practice, the student will be able to: Recognize and use words and expressions of daily and common use; Participate in conversations at a basic level in everyday situations (talking about oneself, asking information, giving and receiving instructions, shopping, reading notices, etc.) Read short texts (menus, signs, announcements, timetables, notices, recipes, short newspaper articles, etc.) Write short passages on arguments of daily life and about one s own direct experiences) Identify and use correctly several basic grammatical units. These include: articles, nouns, adjectives, and their agreements; the present indicative of regular, irregular and reflexive verbs; the passato prossimo; direct pronouns; the indicativo imperfetto; the futuro semplice, and the condizionale semplice. Course Guidelines and Policies Attendance is essential for learning a language, and, therefore, a maximum of only three absences is allowed. Each additional absence, unless it is for a very serious and documented reason, will lower the student s final grade by one notch: e.g., with four absences an A- will be lowered to B+, with five absences to a B, and with six absences to a B-. More than 8 absences will result in an automatic failure of the course. Homework. Students will be regularly assigned exercises, including short essays, and are expected to complete all assignments on time. It is important that students complete the readings assigned for each class in advance of the class meeting. Students are welcome to bring questions about the readings to class in preparing for discussion of the material. Essay assignments will include compositions, summaries, short articles, personal letters and mock s, each of which will be written for a different audience. Please remember that late homework cannot be accepted. Exams. There will be a Mid-Term and a Final exam (see below). All exams will include grammar exercises (in the form of multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank questions and sentence transformation exercises), a reading comprehension exercise, and a short writing and listening comprehension activity. In addition, an Exit proficiency exam will be administered at the end of the course. Quizzes. Two quizzes will be given during the semester (see below). The purpose of the quizzes is to help students maintain a steady pace in their acquisition of new vocabulary. Oral Exam. Each student will be asked to prepare and deliver a short presentation in Italian. The presentation will be based on one of the topics covered during the semester. Topics will be assigned at the beginning of week 10; presentations will be delivered on week 11. Co-curricular Activities. We encourage you to participate in optional that help to develop your conversational skills outside the classroom and offer an opportunity to socialize with classmates, professors, and Italian and international students here in Perugia! Tandem is a social gathering amongst Umbra students, Italian and international students,

3 and other young Italians. Tandem appointments will be announced later in the semester. Tandem is a wonderful way to meet new friends and to practice your Italian in exchange for tips on English!
