3 Abstract We present here a new high resolution regional P-wave velocity model for the lithosphereasthenosphere system beneath the Italian region (Central Mediterranean). A new map of the orust/rnantle diseontinuity (Moho) and a P-wave velocity model are here derived by integrating results from high resolution detailed Local Earthquake Tomography (LET), with results from 30 years of Controlled Souree Seismology (CSS) investigations, and with Receiver Function studies. The tomographie model is obtained by inverting 166,000 P g and P n arrival times large part of whieh have been automatieally pieked and eonsistently weighted with an advaneed automatic pieking system. The resolution of the obtained velocity model is eonsistently higher and the grid spaeing eonsistently smaller than in previous tomographie works targeting the same region. We are now able to image the eomplex geometry of this part of thc subduction-collision system betwecn the Eurasian and African plates adding impartant details tu the overview derived by the teleseisrnie tomography. The boundary between the Adriatic and the Tyrrhenian plates at Moho level is dcfincd all along the Italian peninsula, thus eomplementing surfaee and deep information about the dip and shape of the subducting Adriatie platc. We solved the ehallcnge of produeing high quality observations and assigning eonsistent error estimates to the inereasing amount of data eolleeted, by establishing, by the specific new software paekage WavEx, a new INGV digital waveform data base, easily aeeessible through the

We suggcst that our 3D model may be used as regional 3D reference model for Italy, with benefits for earthquakes loeation, tomography, foeal mechanisms and CMT determination, loeal best ID model ca1culation, and for crustal corrections in high-resolution teleseismic tomography.

5 Riassunto In questo lavoro presentiamo un nuovo modello tomografico regionale di alta risoluzione delle velocitri delle onde P ehe rappresenta il sistema litosfera-astenosfera nella regione Italiana (Mediterraneo Centrale). Abbiamo ottenuto una nuova mappa della Moho c un modello di velocitzi V p integrando i risultati di una tomografia localc (LET) di alta risoluzione eon i risultati di 30 anni di investigazioni con Sismica Attiva (CSS) e eon gli studi di Receiver Function. Il modello tomografieo e ottenuto dall'inversione di 166,000 tempi di arrivo di fasi P g e P n la maggior parte dei quali estata letta e aeeuratamente pesata attraverso l'uso di un sistema avanzato di Picking automatieo. Abbiamo infatti risolto il problerna di produrre osservazioni di tempi di arrivo e di polaritzi di alta qualitzi e di attribuire in maniera consistente una stirna di errore alla crescente quantitzi di dati sismici rcgistrati costrucndo, attraverso un softwarc disegnato appositamentc, un nuovo databasc di forme d'onda digitali registratc dalla rete sismica dell'ingv, facilrnente aeeessibilc attraverso internet (http)/wavcs.ingv.it), sulle quali estato applieato il sistema di Picking autornatieo. La risoluzione del rnodello di velocitri ottenuto eeonsistenternente piu alta e la spaziatura dei nodi eonsistentcrncnte piu piccola rispetto a preeedenti lavori di tornografia nella stessa regione. In basc ai risultati ottenuti siarno in grado di produrre immagini della eornplessa

6 10 Riassunto geometria del sistema eollisionalejsubduttivo ehe eoinvolge la plaeea europea e la placca africana aggiungendo dettagli importanti alle conoscenze derivate dallc tomografie tclesismiche. In particolare epossibile traeciare l'andamento del eontatto fra la placca tirrenica e quella adriatica lungo tutta 130 penisola. italiana completando cosi le informazioni di superfiele e di profondito sulla pendcnza e 130 forma della placca adriatica in subduzione. L'analisi del nostro modello 3D ne suggerisce l'uso come nuovo modello 3D regionale di riferimento per l'italia, nella soluzione di problemi geofisici come la localizzazione di terremoti, 130 tomografia sismica, il ealcolo di meccanismi focali e di CMT, 130 determinazione del miglior modello ID loeale e per il calcolo delle eorrezioni erostali nella tomografia telesismica di alta risoluzione.
