Our engineering departments are specialized in the engineering of the following aspects: - the line - the reinforced and prestressed concrete elements - the manufacturing system for their production They can also execute preliminary, definitive and executive track system engineering, based on the relative technical specifications and sector standards in force in the country of execution. I nostri reparti ingegneria sono specializzati nella progettazione su differenti livelli: - della linea - dei manufatti in calcestruzzo armato o precompresso - dell impianto produttivo per la loro produzione Sono inoltre in grado di realizzare la progettazione di massima, definitiva ed esecutiva dell armamento, sulla base delle specifiche tecniche e della normativa di settore vigente nel Paese, realizzando diverse soluzioni. 05 During the engineering stage all the specific characteristics of each section of the route are taken into consideration and the best choice of track system for each section is highlighted from the very beginning, based on indications such as: - axle load - gauge - presence of viaducts - limited spaces - the need to dampen vibrations - noise emission abatement requirements - presence of uneven routes and/or tight bends - presence of depots/workshop Nella progettazione vengono tenute in conto le specifiche caratteristiche di ciascun tratto del tracciato e viene evidenziata fin da subito la scelta ottimale dell armamento per ogni tratta, sulla base di indicazioni quali: - carico per asse - scartamento - presenza di viadotti - spazi ridotti - necessità di attenuazione delle vibrazioni - esigenza di contenimento del rumore - presenza di tracciati irregolari e/o curve strette - presenza di deposito/officina

6 06 In particular, a great deal of attention is given to the question of vibration damping. Vibration is a phenomenon common to all rail transport systems, specially ballastless ones, which, if not adequately controlled, can have a significant impact on housing, hospitals and other vibration-sensitive buildings. With a view to developing sustainable urban transport, the implementation of solutions to limit vibration levels is an essential aspect and we adopt various solutions to isolate them at source to different levels: There are two options available: - starting with the chosen superstructure system, the adoption of a series of solutions which, in a modular manner, increase the capacity to counteract vibrations, from a minimum to a maximum level; - immediate adoption, for sections which are particularly vibration-sensitive, of a different system to the main superstructure which by its very nature has a greater capacity to dampen vibrations. This is why we have the capacity to develop different track systems which can be used along a single route, depending on the specific needs of each section. In particolare, grande attenzione è rivolta al tema del contenimento delle vibrazioni, fenomeno che coinvolge tutti i sistemi di trasporto su rotaia, in particolare quelli di tipo ballastless, e che può impattare significativamente, se non controllato, su abitazioni, ospedali ed altri edifici sensibili. Nell ottica di uno sviluppo sostenibile del trasporto urbano, l adozione di soluzioni che limitino il livello delle vibrazioni è un elemento molto importante e varie sono le soluzioni che adottiamo per isolarle alla fonte, a diversi livelli. Due sono le strade possibili: - a partire dal sistema di armamento scelto, adottare una serie di soluzioni che aumentano in modo modulare la capacità di contrasto delle vibrazioni, da un livello minimo a uno massimo, - adottare direttamente, per tratti particolarmente sensibili, un sistema diverso da quello principale che per sua natura porta già con sé una maggiore capacità anti-vibrazionale. Da qui la nostra capacità, per uno stesso tracciato, di progettare sistemi di armamento diversi, in base alle necessità di ogni tratta.

7 The choice of the best solution to apply starts directly with an estimate of vibration levels which is analyzed using semianalytical models (PiP model) followed by detailed analysis which use the most advanced models for predicting vibrations (FEM models). Engineering will take into consideration all these variables. From the construction of its first tramway line, in Rome in 1995, (ATAC- Via Principe Eugenio and via Napoleone III), WEGH Group has experience in the adoption of these tools and suitable solutions for vibration damping. 8 The engineering phase also takes into consideration variables which are not strictly technical, such as the life cycle cost of the track system, the times required for installation and the need for skilled labour or manpower which is not available locally. Once the best track system solution has been selected, the team of engineers designs the individual elements, identifying the best system of local production and is also able to design the production facility, including warehouses and production lines. PRODUCTION Our experience of products and processes allows us to work alongside the client in the production of the tramway track system, transfer the necessary know-how for the manufacturing of the elements in situ or directly manufacture the components. 9 09 LAYING WEGH Group has many years of experience in the laying of ballastless systems and the more traditional ballasted tracks. The project is engineered to reduce operating times on the line to an absolute minimum, manufacturing the elements and most of the construction steps in the production plant. 12 TRACK AXIS ARIANNA T-SLAB SYSTEM Arianna is a ballastless system made using prefabricated, prestressed reinforced concrete slabs which are laid on a foundation with the insertion of a special bedding slab which ensures that the slab track is resting on an even and uniform surface, compensating for any irregularities in the foundation. ARIANNA T-SLAB SYSTEM Arianna è un sistema ballastless costituito da piattaforme prefabbricate in calcestruzzo armato precompresso appoggiate su una fondazione di base, con l interposizione di uno speciale massetto di allettamento, che garantisce alla piattaforma un appoggio regolare e omogeneo, compensando le irregolarità della fondazione. Straight type section / Sezione in retto TOP OF RAIL TRACK AXIS 12 Curve type section / Sezione in curva TOP OF RAIL This is an ideal solution to be adopted when considering an investment above all in terms of life cycle cost because it requires very little maintenance over time compared to other track system systems. Arianna does not need the traditional maintenance operations concerning: - ballast tamping - levelling - cleaning and renewal (an important aspect, especially in stations) Si tratta della soluzione ideale da adottare quando si pensa all investimento soprattutto in termini di ciclo di vita, perché richiede nel tempo poca manutenzione rispetto ad altri sistemi di armamento. 13 It is particularly indicated when line realization times are particularly tight, because it can be laid very quickly within a known time schedule, a feature which is particularly beneficial in the tramway sector as it helps reduce any inconvenience to other road users to an absolute minimum. Furthermore, Arianna also offers the advantage of guaranteeing a route which is transitable for both pedestrians and normal road traffic making it a particularly valid option for those areas where tramway and road intersect. It can easily be laid by local, adequately trained, workers and is not affected by any geometrical inaccuracies which may be present in the support infrastructure. The Arianna system is available in the standard version as well as the Arianna+ version. While the standard version meets anti-vibration characteristics comparable to a traditional ballast system, the Arianna+ version has been designed specifically for those cases where high performance is needed in terms of vibration damping in key points of the route, for example, where it passes near housing, where historical and urban heritage needs to be safeguarded. È adatta nei casi in cui i tempi di realizzazione della linea siano particolarmente stretti, perché permette di posare in modo rapido e con tempistiche note, caratteristica particolarmente apprezzabile in ambito tramviario in quanto consente di limitare al minimo i disagi arrecati al traffico veicolare. Inoltre, Arianna ha il vantaggio di garantire la pedonabilità e la carrabilità del tracciato; pertanto è particolarmente utile nelle intersezioni tra sede tramviaria e sede stradale. Ben si presta ad essere posata da manodopera locale, opportunamente formata, e non risente di eventuali imprecisioni geometriche presenti nell infrastruttura di supporto. Il sistema Arianna è proposto in versione standard e nella versione plus. Mentre la versione standard risponde a caratteristiche antivibrazionali paragonabili al ballast, la versione Arianna+ è studiata per i casi in cui siano necessarie elevate prestazioni per ridurre le vibrazioni, in punti nevralgici del tracciato, per vicinanza con il centro abitato, rispetto del patrimonio storico e urbanistico. 14 FLOATING SLAB SYSTEM CONTINUOUS SUPPORT The floating slab system continuous support is the best solution in those cases where vibrations dispersed to the surrounding area need to be reduced to an absolute minimum. Straight type section / Sezione in retto TOP OF RAIL TRACK AXIS 14 Curve type section / Sezione in curva TOP OF RAIL TRACK AXIS This makes it the perfect solution for those sections where the tramway runs alongside historical monuments, densely populated areas, buildings of architectural and artistic value, hospitals and city centres in general. This is a type of track system with slabs of reinforced concrete cast in place, with prefabricated elemens embedded in them and a continuous elastomeric bed placed under the cast concrete. Questo lo rende perfetto per i tratti in cui il tram scorre in prossimità di monumenti storici, centri densamente abitati, palazzi dal valore architettonico ed artistico, ospedali, centri storici in genere. Si tratta di una tipologia di armamento con un solettone in calcestruzzo armato gettato in opera, con elementi prefabbricati annegati all interno e un materassino elastomerico continuo collocato al di sotto del getto.

16 CAST-IN-PLACE SYSTEMS BOTTOM-UP and TOP-DOWN WEGH Group also offers cast-in-place tramway track system solutions following two different types of intervention: Bottom-Up and Top-Down. This is a solution which is adopted when the space available is limited, both in height and width, as is often the case on viaducts. 17 It can be carried out with continuous foundation casting or with individual concrete elements. With adequate insertion of an elastomeric bed underneath the cast-in-place work, it provides medium-high vibration damping. In the Bottom-Up laying method, work begins with casting the foundations to then proceed with installing the rails and relative fasteners whereas in the Top-Down method work is carried out in the opposite direction, starting with anchoring of the rails and fasteners to then proceed with the casting. Può essere eseguita con getti di fondazione continui o con elementi discreti in calcestruzzo. Con l opportuno inserimento di un materassino elastomerico sotto al getto in opera, dà la possibilità di un contenimento medio-alto delle vibrazioni. Nella metodologia di posa Bottom-up si parte dal getto della fondazione per arrivare al montaggio dei binari e degli attacchi; nella metodologia Top-Down, al contrario, si parte dall ancoraggio di binari e attacchi per poi realizzare il getto in opera. 18 SLEEPERS and SWITCH BEARERS with BALLAST The traditional track system using ballast and prestressed concrete sleepers is the best solution when initial investment has to be kept as low as possible. Furthermore, ballast has the special feature of naturally being more suitable for draining off rain water as well as reducing noise emissions. Characteristics of prestressed concrete sleepers include durability and, because they are prefabricated in a production facility, the quality is higher and better controlled. However, ballast, by nature, has a tendency to shift: this means that frequent maintenance operations have to be carried out to tamp the ballast and adjust rail geometry over time. TRAVERSE e TRAVERSONI con BALLAST Il sistema di armamento tradizionale con ballast e traverse in c.a.p. è la soluzione ottimale quando si richiede un investimento iniziale il più contenuto possibile. Il ballast inoltre ha la peculiarità di favorire naturalmente il drenaggio dell acqua piovana, oltre che l attenuazione del rumore. Le traverse in c.a.p. hanno caratteristiche di durabilità e qualità elevata e controllata, grazie alla prefabbricazione in stabilimento. Why chose one of our at-grade crossings? quick and fixed installation times on the worksite limit any disruption to traffic (and therefore any inconvenience to circulation and businesses) and guarantee observance of the estimated costs; the prestressed concrete elements are made and preassembled in the production plant to guarantee a high and controlled level of quality for the safety of users; the use of a monolithic structure instead of the traditional connection joints used in multiple component systems makes it possible to reduce vibrations; maintenance and layout of track geometry is easy and with no need to break up the road; urban utilities (broadband, pipelines, etc.)are housed in special dedicated areas on the slab and therefore are easily identified should maintenance work need to be performed on the utilities; the surface finishes of the at-grade crossings can be selected to fit in with the surrounding urban design. 23 SOME REFERENCES ALCUNE REFERENZE TEB, Bergamo-Albino Tramway (Tramvia delle Valli) WEGH Group built the superstructure for the whole 24 km of line, using various types of superstructure solutions depending on the specific needs of each section. The solution most widely used was the traditional ballast type, including the insertion of an elastomeric bed in the centre of the city to meet vibration damping requirements. Where the tramway crosses the road, a system using prefabricated reinforced concrete slabs was adopted and laid on a foundation with the insertion of a special bedding slab designed to make the crossings transitable for road traffic. Furthermore, in certain points (a number of viaducts and in the Borgo Palazzo tunnel, right in the city centre) a built-on-site system (Bottom- Up or Top-Down) was chosen due to the limited amount of space available, both in terms of height and width. Finally, in the so-called Orobica tunnel, a floating slab tramway system continuous support was used to further reduce vibrations due to the close proximity of the gas pipeline. WEGH Group also designed and built the vehicle maintenance shed. TEB, Metrotramvia Bergamo-Albino (Tramvia delle Valli) WEGH Group ha realizzato l armamento su tutti i 24 km della linea, utilizzando diversi tipi di armamento a seconda delle esigenze specifiche di ogni sezione. La soluzione più largamente utilizzata è quella tradizionale su ballast, con l interposizione di un materassino elastomerico in centro città per rispondere alla necessità di ridurre le vibrazioni. In corrispondenza degli incroci con la sede stradale si è fatto ricorso ad un sistema di piattaforme prefabbricate in calcestruzzo armato appoggiate su una fondazione di base, con l interposizione di uno speciale massetto di allettamento, atte a garantire la carrabilità. Inoltre, in alcuni punti (alcuni viadotti e una galleria, quella di Borgo Palazzo in pieno centro città) è stato scelto un sistema in opera (Bottom-Up o Top-Down) per la presenza di spazi ristretti, sia in altezza che in larghezza. Infine, nella galleria cosiddetta Orobica è stato utilizzato un sistema massivo flottante per ridurre ulteriormente le vibrazioni a carico del vicino gasdotto. WEGH Group ha anche progettato e realizzato la rimessa per la manutenzione dei veicoli. 23 ATM, Milan-Cinisello Balsamo Tramway The route, measuring 8.7 km in all, runs entirely along an embankment. To build it WEGH Group used both a traditional ballast superstructure and ballastless systems. In particular, the ballastless sections involved using a continuous reinforced concrete slab, built on site using the Bottom-Up method. In certain, particularly sensitive points, a special elastomeric bed was inserted under the superstructure to reduce the disturbance caused by vibrations on the surrounding buildings. ATM, Metrotramvia Milano-Cinisello Balsamo Il tragitto, per una lunghezza complessiva di 8,7 km, corre interamente su rilevato. Per la sua realizzazione WEGH Group ha utilizzato sia armamento tradizionale su ballast che sistemi ballastless. In particolare, le sezioni senza ballast prevedono una platea continua in calcestruzzo armato, realizzata in opera con il sistema Bottom-Up. In alcuni punti particolarmente sensibili è stato inserito uno speciale materassino elastomerico al di sotto dell armamento, con lo scopo di ridurre il disturbo causato dalle vibrazioni agli edifici circostanti. To speed up laying times, thus minimizing the inconvenience to road traffic, as well as to limit vibrations and the resulting disturbance on surrounding buildings, a ballastless system was chosen (Arianna and floating slab) with the insertion of a special elastomeric bed. The surface finish, made using prefabricated asphalted slabs in certain areas and paving in others, is completely removable to guarantee quick and easy inspection and maintenance.
