10 NOTIZIE BIBLIOGRAFICHE ESSENZIALI BAT WATER MONITORING SYSTEM For presentation at the ASTM Symposium on Field Methods for Ground Water Contamination Studies and Their Standardisation, 2-7 February 1985, Cocoa Beach, Florida Bengt-Arne Torstensson and Andrew Petsonk A HERMETICALLY ISOLATED SAMPLING METHOD FOR GROUND WATER INVESTIGATIONS Abstract Ground water studies are often associated with use of actions which can lead to introduction of errors or contamination. For instance, transfer of liquids from a bailer to a laboratory vial can permit volatile chemicals sampled from water in open well to escape, or can give rise to external contamination or human contact whith fluids. A set of devices, the BAT Groundwater Monitoring System, has been developed which specifically eliminates these and other difficulties. All individual elements of the system are hermetically sealed, permitting in situ conditions (eg. pressures and dissolved gases) to be mainteined. Hydraulic interconnections and fluid transfers are achieved through use of hypodermic needles, flexibile septa and internally generated pressure gradients. The system permits pressurized sampling of both liquids and gases from virtually any depth in ground waters, open or sectioned-off wells, and piping systems as well as directly from surface waters. Ground water may be extracted in situ from either the saturated or vadose zones of soil or rock formations. Samples are taken in the field with the same presterilized and preevaquated vials that will be sent to the lab; no further transfers, pumps or piping mechanism are required. Since the samples are sealed and presurized, the total gas content will remain the same as that the sampling site, and the samples can truly be said to be rapresentative of the in situ conditions. The in situ system also contains additional above-ground components for use in ground water investigations. These measure ground water pressures or soil suctions, perform tests of hydraulic conductivity, and allow tracer tests to be run. All these devices use needles and septaa to access the only below-ground piece of equipment. This, a permanently installed and sealed filter tip, contains no electronics, and only a single moving part: a flexibile septum. KEYWORKS Ground water, surface water, sampling, monitoring representative samples. INTRODUCTION Standardization of ground water studies require attainment of a hight degree of control over as many phases of the studies as possible. The developements of large body of protocols for specific chemical analyses performed in the laboratory (eg.epa methods 601, 602 "1" etc.) has provided a much needed boost in this direction. Similar protocols are sorely lacking in other areas of ground water investigation, although some progress has been made in preparing guidelines for ground water monitoring point location, construction and sampling procedures. This paper presents a family of devices, the BAT Groundwater Monitoring System (2), which was developed specifically to address many of the above concerns. In particular this system allows to: 1) use simple, standard, reliable, in-ground ports for performing ground water studies: 2) install test ports using standardized, controlled procedures; 3) use of the ports for a variety of different tests, using a range of temporarily connected adapters: 4) perform all tests in a hermetically isolated enviroment, allowing exacting control over most test variables; and 5) transfer samples and/or other test data directly to the laboratory, using techniques analogous to those used to do the test in field. DESCRIPTION OF THE METHOD Pag 10 di 10
Tests which may be performed using the ermetically isolated method include sampling of pore liquid and gas, measurementof pore pressures and tensions, in situ measurement of hydraulic conductivity, and tracer testing. The manner in whic the system is applied is illustrated in Fig.1. It may be seen that all links in the chain connecting ground water via a test adapter to the laboratory are isolated from the external physical, chemical and human envirnment. Note that the technique shown in Fig.1 allows use of several kinds of access ports, test adapters, laboratory procedures and transfer devices. However, all of these are interconnected using the same types of standardized mechanisms. The means by which this is accomplished is shown in Fig.2. It may be seen that the equipment facilitates transfer of liquids, gases and pressures via a system of hypodermic needles and septa located in the various devices. As mentioned above, a variety of test adapters have been developed for use with this system, and these are discussed in the section whic follow.as well, two different means of providing an access port to ground water have been utilized, and these are also described below. EQUIPMENT Components of the ermetically isolated system have been designed to use one of two types of ground water access ports. One port is a sealed filter tip placed in situ in soils at the end of an extension pipe; the other is a conventional (monitoring) well or other borehole. Certain adapters have been developed for use with each of these access methods. In situ sampler The in situ ground water sampling mechanism fits into the system concept as shown in figure 3. It consists of three basic components: (cf.figure 4) A) a permanently installed, sealed filter tip wihich is the attached to an extension pipe: B) a disposable, double-anded hypodermic needle: and C) a presterilized, evacuated sample vial of glass. Both the filter tip and the sample vial are sealed with a specially developed septum.the vial is mounted in a portable sampling probe together with the needle. When lowered down the extension pipe ( Fig.5.), the probe connects the cap of the filter tip, causing the ends of the needle to penetrate the septa in the tip and the sample vial, respectively. The hypodermic needle provides a temporary, leakproof hydraulic connection between the filter tip and the sample vial. Due to the vacuum in the vial, ground water and/or gas is therefore drawn from the formation via the filter tip into the vial. Some fluid must be purged from the system prior to actual sampling. However, since the tip is in direct contact with formation fluids, and contains only a wery small volume itself, the amount required to be purged is also minimized. When the probe is disconnected from the filter tip, the septa in both the filter tip and the sample vial automatically reseal. A special mechanism causes the needle to first be disconnected from the sample vial, ensuring no loss of sampled fluid and/or pressure.tests have shown that the septum in the filter tip can be pierced hundreds of times without loss of its automatic selfsealing capability. The basic in situ system is designated for one-inch nominal inside diameter extension pipes, and permits use of sample vials having a volume of 35 ml. By use of larger diameter pipes (eg.1-1/2 and 2 inch ) the sample volume can be increased to between 150 and 500 ml. There are also a number of special add-on adapters which facilitate use of the in situ sampler. For instance, sample vials may be cascaded using double-ended vials.both two-and three-vial chains have been tested. (This technique is described below for the well "Hypoprobe" sampler). To aid metal analysis, an adapter carrying a 0,2 or 0,45 um pore-size Millipore filter may be inserted between the transfer device and the sample vial. Injection of a minute amount of acid into the evacuated vial just prior to sempling can also aid sample preservation for such analyses. Filter tips BAT filter tips have been developed in a variety of configurations and materials (Fig.6): a) The standard filter tip has been designed with special consideration given to requirements for both (i) high chemical inertness and (ii) adeguate mechanical strenght. It has a body of thermoplastic and a filter of higt density polyetilene, sintered ceramic or porous PTFE. The Pag 11 di 11
ceramic filter has an air entry value which permits sampling and pressure measurement in the vadose zone. b) The stainless steel (ASTM 316 H ) tip provides additional installation strenght c) The eavvy duty tip has its filter moulded inside the body of stainless steel or brass. This tip is designed for use in coarse soils like gravels,t ills etc. d) The probe tip is used for special purposes, e.g. sampling and pressure measurement in thin soil layers. As mentioned above, a filter tip is attached to an extension pipe, and is normally installed by pushing it under a static load down to the desired depth. The heavvy duty tip can be driven into the soil using a light hammer. Installations can of course also be made in predrilled holes. Well Hypoprobe sampler The ermetically isolated method also encompasses a sempler for wells as shown in Fig.7. A detail of the sempling apparatus itself appears in Fig.8. In use an evacuated, prestesterilized sample vial is placed into the sampler housing. This housing also contains a septum at its lower end, and a double ended hypodermic needle. A piston at the upper end of the housing is connected by a lenght of tubing to a hand pump at the surface. When a small air pressure is applied through the tubing, the piston expands, forcing the ends of the needle to penetrate the septa in the vial and at the base of the sampler housing Flow is initiated immediately, and continues until the vial is filled and pressurized. By opening the tubing at the surface, the piston contracts, allowing the vial to reseal. Using a vial that has been sufficently evacuated, it will be visibly filled by the sampled liquid.if, however, total elimination of head space is desired, a configuration similar to that mentioned for the in situ sampler may be used (Fig.9). Two sample vials are cascaded together using an additional hypodermic needle and septum. Upon completion of sampling (Fig.10 ), the lower vial (A) will be entirely full, with all head space restricted to the upper vial (B). This tecnique may also be utilized when it is desiderable to obtain simultaneous, duplicate samples. Two versions of the well sampler are currently in use, one for "shallow" ( up to 200 meters below the water table level) and one for "deep" (down to 200 meters) applications. Where appropriate, these samplers may be used in either open or sectioned-off wells, or in surface waters. The difference between the models is mainly based on the materials used in construction of the device. Other applications The in situ BAT system allows connection to the filter tip a host of devices for performing a variety of tests other than sampling. Adapters has been developed for: a) measurement of pore pressures and tensions, b) in situ measurement of hydraulic conductivity (2,5,7,). The latter device may also be used for tracer and hudraulic fracture testing. The pore pressure adapter is seen in Fig.11. It uses a silicon strain gauge type pressure transducer, connected to a singleended hypodermic needle via a liquid-filled chamber. By lowering this adapter down the extension pipe to the filter tips, pressures and/or tensions may be sensed almost instantaneously, with a resolution of 0,001 m.h2o. The permeameter (Fig.12), performs rapid discrete measurements of both saturated and unsaturated hydraulic conductivities. It uses a transducer to measure the rate of change in gas pressure as liquid flows into or out of the otherwise closed test chamber. This rate reflects the flow rate in accordance with Boyle's low. A detailed discussion of the theory and application of this device is found in (7). Data required for computing the hydraulic conductivity may be collected either manually or automatically. The results are usually initially analyzed in the field simultaneously with data generation. (Fig.13) Pag 12 di 12
EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Field testing of sampling devices The sampling mechanism described above have been field tested at a number of sites. Deep well sampler Tests of the deep well sampler are being carried out within the framework of the Swedish programme for disposal of high level nuclear waste in cristalline rock. These tests are part of a project to characterize the chemistry of deep ground waters. The ability to analize for dissolved gases at great pressures was a preliminary factor motivating selection of this instrument (3). n use, two deep samplers are employed within a packer section, which is part of a package of downhole test equipment. The packers seal off a test section which is then pumped. After pression recovery, the samplers are activated, and pressurized water samples are recovered. The two samplers are activated simultaneously, or separately at different test sections. Data from this project has not yet been released for publication. Shallow well sampler Tests with the shallow well sampler were conducted under the auspices of The Earth Tecnology Corporation at two facilities in California being investigated for limited subsurface contamination by various organic compounds.parallel, duplicated samples were obtained from purged monitoring wells using both a conventional Teflon bailer and an Acrylic versioin of the BAT sampler. These samples were analyzed using EPA methods 601 and 602 for volatile and aromatic organics. Results for the detected compounds of interests are listed in Tables 1 and 2. It may be seen that in all cases, samples taken using the 35 ml. size BAT well sampler led to analysis result comparable to those for bailed samples (40 ml.size). Most interesting, however, are the results from Site P (Table 1). Here the BAT samples showed levels of most detected volatile compounds were 20 to 35 percent higher than would have been assumed from the bailed samples. For one parameter, the increase was 77 percent. This data therefore verifies the ability of the ermetically isolated method to reduce loss of volatile organics due to atmospheric contact. Actual levels of volatiles are probably even higher than those detected here, since the sample vials contained some head space ( a result of incomplete evacuation), and no head space analysis was performed. In situ sampler The in situ sampler was also used at both of these sites. Prior to installation at Site P, determinations of stratigraphy were done using a static cone penetration test The selected positions of the filter tips relative to the wells and generalized lithologies are shown in Fig.14. Samples were analyzed using EPA methods 601 and 602, and these results are also indicated in Tables 1 and 2. There are obvious differences between the samples gathered in situ and those extracted from well water. While in general many of the same parameters were detected, the levels of material identified are not in good agreement. This discrepancy is due primarily to the discrete nature of the in situ filter tips compared to the integrated effect of a screened well. In the heterogeneous type of soil at Site P shown in Fig.14, additional filter tips or "chemical sounding" would be required to accurately locate the source of each of the contaminant constituents This effect can become even more pronounced in highly stratified soils. It is also interesting to note that the slight contamination of the soil at Site S was only diascovered using the hermetically isolated sampling methodology, and that similar levels where noted at two different locations (see fig.14) Again this is most probably due to soil heterogenities. The ability of the in situ sampler to extract water from the clay soil at this site underscores its usefulness in locating what was probably a remnant of an older, single occurrence spill.a number of other testing programs using the in situ sampler have published results. Torstensson (2) used the device to analyze flow conditions in a glacial clay sequence at Verka, Sweden. This data was used to verfy assumptions about the age of pore water in the clays, and confirmed that wery little flow had occurred since deposition of the sediment some 6000 years ago. Chloride levels in samples from various depths correlated well with other data for rates of deposition and times of transgression/regression of the proto-baltic sea waters. (cf.fig.15.) Pag 13 di 13
The Swedish State Power Board has used the in situ system to investigate the content of methane in the pore water in several peat bogs in Sweden. This study (4) concluded that in situ system provided reliable and highly reproducibile results. Haldorsen (5) have used the in situ device to obtain samples from unsaturated agricoltural soils in Norway. This work, together with pore tension and unsaturated hydraulic conductivity measurements, is intended to, among other things, provide data for a model of nitrogen migration. Laboratory testing of sampling devices The in situ filter tips have undergone a large body of lab tests to determine the degree, if any, of their influence on sampled waters. Both the raw materials composing the tip have been tested, as well as the assembled system. Tests related to inorganic constituents were carried out at the Royal Institute of Technology of Stockholm, Sweden (6). These tests have demonstrated that for properly prepared filter tips: 1) most simulated ground water solutions do not leach material from the tip. 2) components of the solutions are not attenuated by the filter or tip in significant amounts, and 3) backflushing the filter tip with distilled water, in the lab or in the field, removes all traces of previously sampled material. Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey is currently investigating organic materials in this regard. Extensive tests of different septa have also been carried out,in order to determine a material composition which will have optimum characteristics with respect to both chemical inertness and self-sealing capability. CONCLUSIONS The above description has illustrated the underlying principles and benefits associated with use of a hermetically isolated sampling methodology. Such a technique allows great control over factors which could influence sampling results, and inhibits the introduction of additional factors. In the comparative case study presented above, the result of use of this tecnique is dramatically seen. The isolated sampling methodology clearly identified the more extensive degree of contamination present, and showed that to minimize costs associated with possible cleanup operations, the location of the strata which contributed to this situation needed to be more clearly defined. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The authors wish to acknowledge the efforts of the numerous individuals and organizations who have been and continue to be involved with evaluation of the ermetically isolated sampling method. In particular, we would like to thank The Earth Technology Corporation for contributing field data to this report. Pag 14 di 14
