Forma: o Generally, nouns that end in -o are masculine, for example: amico, libro, panino. o Those that end in -a are feminine, for example: università, limonata, studentessa. o Nouns that end in -e can be either masculine or feminine, for example: pane (m.), classe (f.). 1

2 2. Plural of nouns (plurale dei nomi) o In Italian, there are four different endings for plural nouns depending on the final letter of the singular form. Regular nouns in Italian form the plural as following. The indefinite article (l articolo indeterminativo) Uso: o The indefinite article, meaning a and an, has different forms in Italian depending on the sound that follows and on the gender of the noun modified. The definite article (l articolo determinativo) Use: o The definite article, the, agrees in number and in gender with the noun it modifies. o It is used to talk about specific persons, places or things. In a series, it is used before each noun. Dove sono il gatto e il cane. Ho comprato la farina e lo zucchero. Specific concept Chi è? È l avvocato. Who is he? He is the lawyer. Nonspecific concept Chi è? È un avvocato. Who is he? He is a lawyer. o Nouns that are used in a general sense also take the definite article. L arte è interessante, ma mi piacciono anche la scienza. Art is interesting, but I like science as well. o The definite article is generally used with the names of languages, except after parlare. Mi piace studiare le lingue straniere, in particolare il portoghese e il francese. I like studying foreign languages, especially Portuguese and French. Non parlo greco. I don t speak Greek. o The definite article is used with the courtesy titles signora, signorina, signore, with professional titles such as, dottore, professore/professoressa, etc., when talking about a person. However, it is not used when speaking directly to a person. La signora Bianchi è un amica di mia zia. But: Buon pomeriggio, signora Ferrari. o Recall that the article of the title is dropped when used in direct address : Il signor Rossi non c è? Buon pomeriggio, signor Rossi. Forma: 3

Qual è il tuo film preferito? Da notare: Quale (singolare) vs. Quali (plurale) Qual + vocale Quanto? (How much?) 6

7 Adjective: How much/many + noun Quanto caffè vuoi? Quanta pasta mangi? Quanti ragazzi hai invitato? Quante persone ci sono? Quanto specifies quantity. It agrees both in number and gender with the noun. Adverb: How much + verb Quanto costa la limonata? Quanto costano le limonate? Quanto in this case specifies the price of something. 8. Asking questions (fare domande) o The interrogatives (interrogativi) explained above allow you to request specific kinds of information, for example, who, what, when, etc. However, there is another question strategy that elicits a yes or no response. o This is formed with the normal intonation pattern for questions without changing the word order, or by putting the subject at the end. Domanda Amanda ha ragione? Ha ragione Amanda? Risposta Sì, Amanda ha ragione. No, Amanda non ha ragione. o To say right?, doesn t he/she?, aren t you?, etc., use either no?, vero?, or non è vero? 8 o Italian possessive adjectives mio (my), tuo (your), suo (his/her), nostro (our), vostro (your), loro (their) are almost always preceded by a definite article. The article and the possessive adjective agree in number and in gender with the possession, not with the possessor. È la bicicletta di Valerio? Sono le amiche di Valentina? È il computer dei ragazzi? Di chi è il gatto? Di Francesca? Sì, è la sua bicicletta. Sì, sono le sue amiche. Sì, è il loro computer. No, è il mio gatto. Filippo is looking for his cell phone. o A possessive adjective referring to a relative is not preceded by a definite article when it occurs before a singular, unmodified noun. Nostro figlio abita a Milano. Mia madre è professoressa. Tuo padre insegna letteratura. Our son lives in Milan. My mother is a teacher. Your father teacher literature. o Plural nouns always take a definite article, as does loro + noun (with the nouns mamma, papà, nonna, nonno, either form is acceptable). I nostri figli abitano a Milano. La mia mamma è professoressa. OR Mia mamma è professoressa. Il loro padre insegna letteratura. 8

L aggettivo BUONO Uso: o The adjective buono (good) can be placed before or after the noun it modifies, with no change in meaning. o Before the noun, its singular forms correspond to the indefinite article forms un, uno, una, un. o Plural forms are the same both before and after a noun. Jennifer Lopez è una donna molto bella. Jennifer Lopez is a very beutiful woman. Luca si è alzato molto presto. Luca got up very early. Jennifer Lopez è una donna bellissima. Luca si è alzato prestissimo. Forma: o To form adjectives or adverbs with this suffix, drop the final vowel and add on the suffix. Bello bellissimo Felice felicissimo Vero verissimo o If the original word ends in co and is pluralized to chi (stanco = stanchi), and h is added to preserve the hard sound. Stanco stanchissimo Bianco bianchissimo o But if the original word ends in co and is pluralized to ci (simpatico = simpatici), an h is not required. Simpatico simpaticissimo o If the word ends in go, an h is always added. Lungo lunghissimo 10

11 9.5. Molto/Tanto o Molto can be used either as an adverb, meaning very, or as an adjective, meaning much (pl. many, a lot of). Adverb (no agreement) Giulia è molto simpatica. Adjective (normal agreement) Giulia ha molte amiche. o In expressions with avere + noun, molto is translated as very in corresponding English expressions. However, it is an adjective and must agree with the noun in such expressions. Hanno molta fame. Hai molta paura? They are very hungry. Are you very afraid? o Tanto has the same meaning and features as molto. It also means quite. Giulia è tanto simpatica. Giulia ha tante amiche Troppo o The word troppo (too much, too many), like molto and tanto, has both adjectival and adverbial functions. Adverb (no agreement) La giornata è troppo lunga. La lezione è troppo difficile. Adjective (normal agreement) Ho fatto troppe cose ieri. Ci sono troppi studenti nell aula Poco o The word poco (few, little), like molto, tanto and troppo, has both adjectival and adverbial functions. Adverb (no agreement) Il libro è poco interessante. I telegiornali sono poco interessanti. Adjective (normal agreement) Faccio poche cose oggi. Ci sono pochi tavoli in questa aula. 11

12 9.8. Lo stesso o The structure of lo stesso (the same) agrees in gender and number with the noun. Singolare Maschile Io faccio lo stesso compito. Femminile Gloria parla la stessa lingua. Plurale Voi fate gli stessi compiti. Parliamo le stesse lingue The indefinite adjective ALTRO (other) o Altro is often used with the indefinite article to mean another. It is an indefinite adjective that agrees with the noun it modifies. Maschile (singolare) un altro Prendo un altro panino. Femminile (singolare) un altra Prendo un altra brioche L aggettivo dimostrativo QUESTO (this/these) o Questo (this/these) can be treated just like any other adjective, and can also be used as a pronoun. L aggetivo: Singular Plural Masculine questo cappello (this hat) questi cappelli (these hats) Feminine questa giacca (this jacket) queste giacche (these jackets) o In the singular, the final vowel should be dropped before a word beginning with a vowel. questo impermeabile = quest impermeabile (this rain coat) questa estate = ques estate (this summer) 12

14 10. Il partitivo (partitive articles) o The preposition di + definite article means: some/any (this is one possible partitive). Vorrei del formaggio. = di + il formaggio I would like some cheese. Chi vuole dello zucchero nel tè? = di + lo zucchero Who would like some sugar in the tea? Ho comprato della frutta? = di + la frutta I bought some fruit. Vuoi dei piselli? = di + i piselli Do you want some peas? o Mass singular nouns use un po di to express a little bit of/a bit. o A partitive is also a way to pluralize an indefinite article. For example: Questa è una pera verde. Queste sono delle pere verdi Il partitivo 2 (altre forme del partitivo) o With count nouns (that is, those that can be put into plural), the following forms can be used: 1. di + article or 2. alcuni/e (+ plural) or 3. qualche (+ singular) For example: delle mele, dei professori, alcune banane, alcuni studenti, qualche barca. o With mass singular or non count nouns (that is, those that do not normally have a plural form), the following forms can be used: 1. di + article or 2. un po di For example: dello zucchero, un po di carne Il partitivo negativo o The negative partitive is not expressed overtly. Vuoi delle banane? Do you want some bananas? No, non voglio le banane. No, I do not want any bananas. 14

15 Prendiamo un po di zucchero? Shall we take a bit of sugar? No, non prendiamo lo zucchero. No, we do no take any sugar. o Nessuno can be used optionally as a negative partitive structure. Hai mangiato alcune fragole? Avete dei biglietti? No, non ho mangiato nessuna fragola. No, non abbiamo nessun biglietto. o This structure, however, cannot be used with noncount nouns. Vuoi un po di pane? Volete della carne? No, non voglio il pane. No, non vogliamo la carne. 15
