2 Basic Information For Everybody What s the United Kingdom? The United Kingdom is the union of Great Britain (England+Scotland+Wales) and Northern Ireland. The capital city is London; people speak English. How can I get to the United Kingdom? You can get to the U.K by plane, by train through the Eurotunnel and by car or coach and ferry.

3 What do I need to go to the U.K? You need your documents (identity card or passport) and some pounds ( ) Do I need to change the time of my watch? Yes, because there is a different time zone. For example: in Italy 12:00-1 hour 11:00 in the U.K. What's the weather like in the U.K.? It isn't cold because of the Gulf Stream but it is changeable (rain, sun, wind, fog

4 sometimes in the same day) so it is always better to have some type of waterproof clothes and keep yourself prepared What are the best months to travel to the U.K.? The best months are from April to September. These months generally have the most pleasant temperatures and less rain. July and August are the warmest months. The sunniest parts of Britain are along the south coast of England. Warmest and coldest months Rainfall

5 What kind of tourist are you? What do you like best? Here are four profiles with specific information about the different aspects of the United Kingdom, the things you can find there and the opportunities for a special holiday PROFILE N 1: The Nature Lover What kind of landscapes can I see and visit in the U.K? You can see mountains in Scotland, in the north of England and in Wales. The tallest mountain is in Scotland, its name is Ben Nevis and it is 1344 mt tall.

6 In the UK you can't take photos of glaciers because there aren't any. You can find and visit hills in the south west of England, but if you want to spend some time in the countryside you can go to the south east of England. If you like the sea you can visit and take photos from the coasts. They are all around Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The most beautiful coast is in the south along the English Channel. It is tall, white and rocky (the White Cliffs).

7 Can I visit National Parks in the U.K? What kind of wild animals can I see? You can visit a lot of National Parks all around Great Britain. In these National Parks you can take photos of: - birds: owls, hawks, eagles, woodpeckers. - land animals: foxes, deer, wild horses, squirrels, rabbits, hedgehogs, polecats, weasels, badgers.

8 PROFILE N 2: The Food Lover What kind of cereals can I find in the U.K.? You can find wheat, oat and barley so you can bake different kinds of bread, cakes and biscuits. From these cereals you can also obtain a very famous alcoholic drink called whisky. It s made above all in Scotland near Glasgow. Agricultural crops

9 What kind of fruit and vegetables can I find? You can find potatoes and beets but also carrots and onions (they all grow under the ground). You can find apples and pears but the most popular kind of fruit are berries: strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries. You can also find walnuts and hazelnuts. What kind of meat can I find in the U.K.? Sheep and mutton meat is very popular. You can see a lot of sheep in Scotland and Wales. Scottish sheep have got a black face. We can have milk, cheese and wool from them.

10 Cattle is also very important (= cows, bulls, calves,...) for meat and milk, butter and cheese. Pork meat (from pigs) and poultry (= chickens, hens, turkey) are also popular in homes and restaurants kitchens.

11 What kind of fish can I find? Cod is the most popular fish and it is famous for the recipe fish & chips. Salmons are found in Scotland where they go to lay eggs. Where can I have a good lunch or dinner? You can go to a restaurant and you can choose to eat British food but also Indian food, Chinese, Japanese, Mexican... Pubs are typically British. They are a mixture between a restaurant and a bar. You can go to the bar room only if you are 18 years old or over. Families or

12 teenagers can have soft drinks or food in the garden or in other rooms.

13 Everywhere you can also find fast food and take away restaurants. Some special British food is: Roastbeef and Yorkshire pudding (England) Haggis (Scotland) Cock-a-leekie soup (Wales) Christmas pudding (U.K.) Irish stew (Northern Ireland)

14 PROFILE N 3: The Businessman/Businesswoman How can I use my money for business? You have a choice among soil and subsoil resources but you can also choose industries and, above all, services. Which soil and subsoil resources can I find? You can find woods from which you can have timber. In the subsoil it is possible to find oil in Scotland in the North Sea. In the north of England there is a lot of coal and in other parts of the UK you can find iron, tin and lead.

15 If I want to buy a factory what kind of industries can I choose from? You can choose among the mechanical industry (cars, planes and ships) and the chemical industry, (medicines); a type of local factory is the wool one especially in Scotland (tweed and tartan) and in Wales. What about the services? They are the most important way of investing money you can choose to put your money in finance (banks and insurance companies)

16 or in tourism (hotels, restaurants, gadgets/souvenirs, tour guides and language schools).

17 PROFILE N 4: The Art Lover What kind of works of art and architecture can I find in the UK? In the UK there is an enormous choice of works of art to see and visit. This is because this country has a long and rich history so it is possible to find evidences from the Prehistoric Age as Stonehenge; from the Roman times as the Hadrian s Wall

18 and the cities of London and Bath; from the Vikings as the town of York from the Middle Ages as castles and cathedrals.

19 In the following ages there are palaces as Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament, museums as the British Museum and art galleries as the National Gallery.

20 In modern times new interesting buildings are skyscrapers as the Gherkin and the Shard - the tallest in Europe (72 floors 310 mt) and the London Eye the famous panoramic wheel.

I grafici sono stati riprodotti dagli alunni sotto la guida della prof. Moncalero che ha curato anche la gestione delle informazioni geografiche. Le immagini sono state ricercate a casa dagli alunni (motore di ricerca google immagini - immagini pubbliche disponibili) e portate su chiavetta a scuola per il trasferimento sul testo definitivo.
