2 INATTESE MERAVIGLIE Un viaggio alla scoperta delle scuole di TCF e del Pakistan un paese che guarda con slancio al futuro I fotografi hanno donato a Italian Friends of TCF le proprie opere raccolte nella mostra Inattese meraviglie e sono tutte in vendita. I proventi saranno devoluti a sostegno delle scuole di TCF a Karachi e Lahore. UNEXPECTED MARVELS A journey of discovery into TCF schools and Pakistan, a country which looks passionately towards the future The photographers have donated their images, collected in the exhibition Unexpected marvels, to Italian Friends of TCF and their works are all for sale. Proceeds from the sale will be entirely donated to TCF schools in Karachi and Lahore. 1

I suoi lavori trovano riscontro in numerosi premi, tra i quali: Premio Canon Giovani Fotografi, Lens Culture International Exposure Award, Julia Margaret Cameron Award, International Photography Awards. Ha esposto in diversi festival internazionali. I suoi lavori sono pubblicati regolarmente su testate come Marie Claire, Vanity Fair, Panorama, L Espresso, IL, Foto 8, Vision, Private, Burn. Il suo ultimo libro, Out of Tibet, è stato pubblicato Dewi Lewis Publishing. Italian photographer Albertina d Urso has dedicated years to social and humanitarian reportages. Her works were rewarded in several awards, such as Canon Young Photographers Award, Lens Culture International Exposure Award, Julia Margaret Cameron Award, International Photography Awards. She was exhibited worldwide in several international festival. Her work is regularly featured in magazines like Vanity Fair, Marie Claire, Panorama, L Espresso, IL, Photo 8, Vision, Private, Burn. Her last book, Out of Tibet, has been released by Dewi Lewis Publishing. 2

4 Gli studenti del Cowasjee Campus di Karachi attraversano il ponte che connette lo slum, conosciuto come Mosquito Colony, con la scuola. Students of Cowasjee Campus in Karachi cross the bridge that connects the slum area known as "Mosquito Colony" to the school Nazia, 12 anni e Shazia, 8 anni, studentesse dell Infaq Campus a Rehri Goth. Hanno altri otto fratelli, tra i 6 e i 16 anni, ma nessuno, a parte loro, è mai andato a scuola. Nazia and Shazia, age 12 and age 8, students at Infaq Campus, Rehri Goth. 5 I bambini provenienti dai villaggi della zona arrivano all Infaq Campus, Rehri Goth, Karachi, Sindh. Children from the small local villages of the area arrive at Infaq Campus, in Rehri Goth, Karachi, Sindh Bisna Iqbal, 19 anni, ha studiato all Infaq Campus di Rehri Goth. Al momento frequenta il college. Vorrebbe diventare infermiera. Ha tre sorelle più piccole che come lei studiano. Suo padre è disabile e sua madre è l ostetrica del villaggio. Bisna Iqbal, age 19, is a former student of Infaq Campus in Rehri Goth. At the moment, she is attending College. She would like to become a nurse. She has three younger sisters who are also studying. Her father is disabled and her mother is a midwife in the village. She sustains herself as a polio worker and works also for the Aga Khan Foundation hospital. Children from the small villages of the area leave their homes in the early morning to reach TCF schools in Nathoki and Minhala Unzila, 14 anni, studentessa del Cowasjee Campus. Ha vinto il torneo studentesco di volano. Tutto il quartiere è molto fiero di lei. Suo padre guida un risciò. Ha nove fratelli, ma il maggiore, finito in un brutto giro, è stato ucciso. Vorrebbe continuare a studiare e andare al college, ma al momento i suoi fratelli sono contrari. Unzila, age 14, student at Cowasjee Campus. She won the student Badminton Tournament. Her neighborhood is very proud of her. Her dad is a rickshaw driver. She has nine brothers, but the eldest ended up in the wrong circle and has been killed. Sheikhupura, the poor and rural area where Atlas Honda Campus is located Fiza, ex studentessa TCF del Cowasjee Campus di Karachi. Al momento sta frequentando il college. Ha aperto un salone di bellezza nel mercato vicino casa. All inizio lavorava in casa, ma suo padre l ha aiutata ad avviare il suo nuovo negozio nel mercato che si trova proprio vicino al suo banco della carne. Ha già due collaboratrici, tra cui sua sorella minore che fa henna painting. Fiza, age 17, is a former TCF student of Cowasjee Campus in Karachi. She is now studying in College. She opened a beauty salon in the market near her house. She started working at home but later her father helped her start her own business in the market located right next to his meat selling stall. 9 Abdul Wahab, studente della scuola primaria "Dr Amir ud Din Trust" a Kahna. Il padre è deceduto e sua madre lavora tutto il giorno. Vive con la nonna e la aiuta a gestire un negozio. Abdul Wahab, a student of the primary school "Dr Amir ud Din Trust in Kahna. His father had passed away and his mother works full time. He lives with his grandmother and helps her run a shop. 12 Shahida, 25 anni, è una ex studentessa di TCF. Si è laureata in medicina e adesso sta facendo l'anno di apprendistato al "National Institute of Child Health". E' una futura ginecologa. Shahida, age 25, former TCF student. She graduated with a degree in medicine and now she is doing a year long internship at the National Institute of Child Health. Dopo il college, è stata insegnante per due anni, durante i quali ha anche conseguito un master. Ora è la preside del Mobilink Campus a Nathoki. Sadaf Nousheen, age 27, former TCF student. 11 Zunaira Akbar, ex studentessa TCF. Ha ottenuto i voti migliori di tutta la scuola e ha ricevuto una borsa di studio per il college. Vorrebbe studiare ingegneria, possibilmente all estero, e diventare ingegnere. Ha dieci fratelli e suo padre è morto. Insieme alla sorella Saniya cuciono vestiti e danno ripetizioni ai bambini del loro villaggio. Zunaira Akbar, former TCF student. She had the best results of her school and won a scholarship to attend College. She would like to study Engineering, possibly abroad, to become an engineer. She has ten siblings and her father passed away. 12 Javeria Yousuf, 25 anni, ex studentessa TCF, ha continuato gli studi al college e conseguito un master. Ora è insegnante di matematica ed economia al Shirin Sultan Dossa Campus 3 a Minhala. 13 Kasbano dice che dovrebbe avere 35 anni, ma non ne è sicura. E addetta alle pulizie all Infaq Campus. Sua figlia Seema è l unica della famiglia che frequenta la scuola. 15 KARACHI E LAHORE: FERMENTO METROPOLITANO E CONTEMPLAZIONE Karachi and Lahore: metropolitan vivacity and contemplation Foto di Photos by Alessandro Belgiojoso Alessandro Belgiojoso Nato a Milano nel 1963, vive e lavora tra l Italia e l estero. Nel 2005 espone allo Studio Visconti di Milano la mostra Paesaggi Mentali. Dal 2006 focalizza il suo lavoro su tematiche relative al concetto di confine e la sua transitabilità. Nel 2007 presenta il libro Corea, un viaggio impossibile? presso Forma, Milano, dove tiene una mostra di fotografie scattate nel Nord e nel Sud della Corea. Il progetto ha preso parte al Padiglione della Corea. Nel 2012 pubblica per Hermès e i tipi di Silvana Editoriale la monografia fotografica Inafferrabile Milano. Nel 2017 ha pubblicato ADSI 12 per l Associazione Dimore Storiche Italiane e InLombardy per Regione Lombardia. Collabora attivamente con le principali riviste Italiane di architettura. Alessandro Belgiojoso was born in 1963, in Milan. He lives and works in Italy and abroad. In 2005 he held the exhibition Mental Landscapes at the Studio Visconti Gallery, in Milan. Since 2006 his work has focused on the concept of boundary and the urge to overstep its limits. In 2007 at Forma Foto, Milan, he exhibited a body of work taken in North and South Korea, and presented his book Korea, an Impossible Journey? The project was key to the Korean Pavillion. In 2012 he publishes for Hermès and the Types of Silvana Editorial the photographic book Inafferrabile Milano. In 2017 he published ADSI 12 for the Italian Historical Housing Association and InLombardy for Lombardy Region. He actively collaborates with leading Italian Architectural magazines. 14

Aga Khan Trust for Culture lavora dal 2007 al recupero del centro storico dentro le antiche mura di Lahore dove si usano esclusivamente le antiche tecniche di costruzione. Ilyas Kala extracts earth from the excavation site which is later filtered to search for artefacts at the 17th century Wazir Khan Chowk. Since 2007, the Aga Khan Trust for Culture has been conserving the historic quarters within the old Walled City of Lahore using exclusively traditional techniques of construction. 002IMG_8265 IL PADIGLIONE REALE THE ROYAL PAVILLION Dewan-e-Khas, nel Forte di Lahore (Shahi Qila in lingua Urdu), è uno dei padiglioni destinati ai dignitari e agli ospiti reali. Fu costruito dall imperatore Mogul Shahjahan, all apice del suo regno nel corso del XVII secolo. Dewan-e-Khas, one of the royal pavilions at the Shahi Qila (Lahore Fort) was constructed by the Mughal Emperor Shahjahan at the peak of his reign during the 17th century. An exchange of glances between a driver of a public transport and a driver of a tourist bus with which we visited the center of Karachi. 006IMG_2307 TONALITA CROMATICHE SHADES OF COLOR Le infinite tonalità di uno stesso colore danno un idea della complessità del lavoro alla base della tessitura artigianale degli shawls pakistani nel famoso Atelier Bunto Kazmi di Karachi, dove le tele, montate su grandi telai, vengono ricamate per mesi a mano con antiche tecniche tramandate per generazioni. The endless shades of the same colour tone gives an idea of the complexity of the artisanal work seen on Pakistani textiles and shawls at the renowned Atelier Bunto Kazmi of Karachi. Le lavoratrici raccolgono il materiale in sede e nelle loro rispettive case lo lavorano e creano i sacchetti in carta stampata a mano. Questo sistema permette alle donne di emanciparsi col lavoro, rimanendo però nel perimetro domestico per la cura della famiglia. A meeting amongst female staff at the head office of the foundation RLCC-APWA in Karachi. The workers collect the material at the headquarter which are then taken home to make hand printed papers. 23 015IMG_2770 MARE DI PLASTICA SEA OF PLASTIC All esterno dell Infaq Campus nel villaggio di pescatori Rehri Goth, all estrema periferia di Karachi, la plastica, che si sta diffondendo esponenzialmente con l introduzione dei prodotti di largo consumo in piccole confezioni dal basso costo, non riesce ad essere smaltita dal sistema fognario già molto stressato dall esplosione demografica. Outside the Infaq Campus in the village of fishermen Rehri Goth, at the periphery of Karachi, a sea of plastic residue is expanding exponentially with the introduction of low-cost products and packaging. It cannot be disposed off by the already heavily choked sewage system. 016IMG_9267 TEXTURE 1 IL SOFFITTO TEXTURE 1 THE CEILING Sheesh Mahal, il palazzo degli specchi in lingua Urdu, all interno del Forte di Lahore, era dedicato a Mumtaz Mahal, moglie dell imperatore Mogul Shahjahan. La lavorazione dei soffitti è in madreperla, incastonata con migliaia di specchi multicolori finemente intagliati. Sheesh Mahal (the Palace of Mirrors) inside the Lahore Fort was dedicated to Mumtaz Mahal, the wife of Mughal Emperor Shahjahan. 24 017IMG_9222 IL FORTE DI LAHORE LAHORE FORT Hathi Paer (il passaggio degli elefanti, in lingua Urdu), l imponente scalone di accesso al Forte di Lahore con 58 gradini bassi e larghi, atti a far salire gli elefanti dei cortei reali. L arrivo della corte veniva annunciato dagli eunuchi che cantavano dai balconi sovrastanti. Hathi Paer (Elephant Path) was a staircase containing 58 low and broad steps to accommodate elephants that used to carry royalty to and from the palace of the Lahore Fort. The arrival of royal members was announced by eunuchs from the balconies above. 018IMG_8740 TEXTURE 2 - IL GIACIGLIO TEXTURE 2 - THE CHARPOY La trama di un giaciglio di una famiglia di Nathoki. 25 019IMG_0410 I LOTTATORI DI WRESTLING THE WRESTLERS Il Wrestling è una pratica sportiva molto diffusa anche nella città di Lahore, con palestre all aperto e una complessa rete di combattimenti, tifoserie e scommesse. Wrestlers practice in an open-air gym in Lahore a traditional sport which uses a complex set of rules of combat, fans and betting. 020IMG_9238 GLI ARCHITETTI THE ARCHITECTS Alcuni architetti Ciqam Team dell Aga Kahn Foundation stanno mappando il complesso monumentale ipogeo nel Palazzo d estate dei Mogul del Forte di Lahore con una speciale apparecchiatura Leica. La particolare disposizione sotterranea degli ambienti e l esposizione delle finestre che attraversano dei lunghi tunnel, garantiscono la circolazione dell aria fresca malgrado il clima torrido. Ciqam team members (a project of the Aga Khan Cultural Service) carry out electronic documentation of the interiors of the Summer Palace at the Lahore Fort.
