A differenza dei giovani australiani, che anche quando vanno a scuola hanno spesso lavori stagionali, i giovani italiani che continuano gli studi dopo la scuola dell'obbligo, di solito, non lavorano né durante l'anno scolastico, né durante l'estate e continuano ad essere mantenuti dai genitori. Non si tratta solo di un problema di mentalità: è anche vero che molti giovani non lavorano durante le vacanze perché in Italia è molto difficile trovare un lavoro stagionale. Anche per quanto riguarda il lavoro che un giovane cerca una volta che ha finito gli studi, ci sono molte differenze tra la situazione di un italiano e quella di un australiano. Dopo l'università, una larga percentuale dei giovani rimane in attesa di un'occupazione per lungo tempo. Oltre ai problemi di un mercato del lavoro in recessione, infatti, i giovani devono fare i conti con problemi di mentalità. Per un italiano, il posto di lavoro deve essere stabile per essere davvero soddisfacente. Egli cerca nel lavoro per prima cosa la sicurezza che non dovrà né cambiare occupazione né trasferirsi in un'altra città. Se trova un'occupazione che gli garantisce questo tipo di stabilità, la preferisce anche ai possibili benefici economici di una carriera più elastica. 5 OVERSEAS EXCURSIONS 7 Procedures and Standards - Overseas Excursions 7.1 Approval An overseas excursion must have the endorsement of the principal and, when more than one school is involved, the principals of all participating schools. In addition, overseas excursions must be approved by the regional director on the recommendation of the school education director Approval for overseas excursions cannot be assumed At least nine months prior to the date of planned departure principals must alert their school education director of their intention to organise an overseas excursion, and seek approval to continue using the form Notice of Intention to Plan an Overseas Excursion found as part of the Overseas Excursions Advice and Application Pack at Appendix Once approval to proceed has been granted by the school education director, principals should familiarise themselves with the Overseas Excursions Advice and Application Pack (Appendix 6). Applications to travel overseas, contained in the pack, must be forwarded by the principal to the school education director at least four months prior to the date of the planned excursion Approval will generally only be given to excursions that occur substantially in vacation time Overseas travel will not proceed if the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has recommended against travel. Advice regarding travel to particular countries is on the DFAT web site. Regional directors must approve overseas travel of student groups. Teachers in schools need to prepare a submission for their regional director to receive approval. Regional directors usually refer to advisories published by DFAT (Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade) when considering such submissions. 7 VIVA IL CINEMA ITALIANO! The Italian Film Festival Sydney 26 October-13 November Australia s fascination with Italy is set to continue with the 2006 ITALIAN FILM FESTIVAL this October and November, with the largest and strongest selection in the event s seven-year history announced by Palace Cinemas. Alongside a programme of award-winning contemporary films that will all make their Australian premieres at the event, the Festival will feature the largest collection of films from legendary director Michelangelo Antonioni, ever screened together nationally in Australia. The selection this year consists of films that are tremendously accomplished, entertaining and really accessible to Australian audiences, said Antonio Zeccola, Artistic Director of the Festival, and Managing Director of Palace Cinemas. Many have recently screened in Venice, Cannes and Berlin, where they drew great critical acclaim. I m also particularly excited about the Antonioni retrospective. His films have been an inspiration to international audiences for more than a generation. The Festival will open in Melbourne on October 25, and Sydney on October 26 with the Australian premiere of popular actor and director Carlo Verdone s My Best Enemy (Il mio miglior nemico), before touring nationally. My Best Enemy is a delightful generational comedy that re-unites Verdone with his Manual of Love co-star Silvio Muccino. The film was a huge critical and boxoffice success on its Italian local release earlier this year. Other contemporary films to screen include: The Beast In The Heart (La bestia nel cuore) Christina Comencini s moving family-secrets drama, also known as Don t Tell, was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2006 Academy Awards, and stars the luminous Giovanna Mezzogiorno; CURRICULUM K-12 DIRECTORATE TERM 4,

8 The Caiman (Il caimano) The stunning new film from Cannes Palme d Or winning director Nanni Moretti (The Son s Room, Dear Diary) tackling Italian politics and love as seen through the eyes of a failing film producer; Crime Novel (Romanzo criminale) From the writers of the acclaimed The Best Of Youth, Michele Placido's absorbing gangster epic was nominated for the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival and won eight 2006 David Di Donatello (Italian Academy) Awards including Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor and Best Cinematography; The Wedding Director (Il regista di matrimoni) The new film from legendary auteur Marco Bellocchio (Good Morning, Night) stars Sergio Castellito as a famous film director who inadvertently winds up in Sicily filming a princess s wedding. Other announced titles include: The Days Of Abandonment (I giorni dell'abbandono) Viva Zapatero! Mario s War (La guerra di Mario) Along The Ridge (Anche libero va bene) The Family Friend (L amico di famiglia) The Michelangelo Antonioni retrospective will include fifteen feature films, and four programs of shorts and documentaries, and is the most extensive presentation of his work ever assembled for Australian audiences. Included is Antonioni s first feature film Chronicle Of A Love (Cronaca di un amore) (1950), his biggest success: the trilogy The Adventure (L avventura) (1960), The Night (La notte) (1961) and The Eclipse (L eclisse) (1962) and his most famous international English-language films Blow-Up (1966) and Zabriskie Point (1970). 9 TERM 3 SUCCESSES Community Languages Congratulations to Mirella Di Marco and the students of Orange Grove Public School whose work, along with 2 other schools, was chosen for the poster competition commemorating 25 years of Community Languages. Out-of-School-Hours Programs Congratulations to Antonella Ponti and Rosanna Presello who won the Minister s Award for excellence in teaching. Both Antonella and Rosanna completed the Community Languages Teaching Certificate with the University of NSW gaining High Distinctions. Mock Speaking Exams On Saturday 26 August, mock speaking exams were held at the International Grammar School for Stage 6 Continuers. The day was very successful with students expressing their gratitude for this invaluable preparation prior to the speaking exams. We would like to repeat the Mock Speaking Exams next year, but it cannot happen without teachers who are willing to be examiners. 10 I wish to thank the teachers from the International Grammar School for initiating the day with very special thanks to Rosina Tortorella and the teachers who gave up their time to work with the students. The day would not have been possible without them. More information about the Mock Speaking exams will be included in the Term 1, 2007 issue of DIMMI. Full-immersion weekend with Ca Foscari September The intensive three-day workshop that culminated in some participants taking the CEDILS exam on the fourth day was inaugurated by the newly appointed Consul General of Italy, Dott. Latteri. His presence was most appreciated especially as it was one of his first contacts with the Italian community. The presenters, Dott.ssa Elisabetta Pavan and Dott. Michele Daloiso from Ca Foscari, University of Venice, conducted the day giving the participants the opportunity to discover: a range of games the theory behind the use of games their purpose in the classroom the sequence required in a lesson plan and how to structure a lesson or a unit of work. Some notions that formed the content of the workshop: Insegnare una lingua significa insegnare a comunicare in una lingua straniera e comunicare va al di là della conoscenza e dell uso di un sistema linguistico, implica la capacità di saper interagire con successo all interno della cultura oggetto. Quando lo scenario in cui il docente si trova ad operare è un Università straniera variabili ben precise entrano in gioco, quali l insegnamento a giovani adulti, la necessità di rispondere ai loro bisogni, a diverse motivazioni, alla loro autonomia e responsabilità, caratteristiche che li portano ad essere capaci di decidere autonomamente e di assumersi le responsabilità conseguenti alle proprie decisioni. Come esplicitato in Balboni (2005), obiettivo del processo di insegnamento acquisizione dovranno essere la centralità dello studente e la conoscenza dell italiano; l insegnante facilitatore dell apprendimento maturerà velocemente la consapevolezza di quanto i giovani adulti possano imparare in un lasso anche breve di tempo se adeguatamente motivati e provvisti di una guida adeguata, funzioni, queste, facilitate dall interesse che gli argomenti di carattere culturale suscitano negli studenti. Saper comunicare in italiano con italiani è un evento che non avviene nel vuoto: esistono elementi ben precisi che devono essere presenti, così come le persone coinvolte devono possedere determinate competenze e conoscenze perché l atto comunicativo abbia successo. Insegnare italiano come lingua straniera, quindi, supera la padronanza della competenza linguistica: nella classe di lingua vanno coinvolti in maniera attiva docente e discenti, devono entrare tutti i linguaggi, verbali e non verbali, così come non si deve prescindere dall insegnamento di una precisa consapevolezza culturale. 11 Performances For Schools The NSW Department of Education and Training is committed to developing children s appreciation, enjoyment and participation in the arts in all its forms as part of their education. It acknowledges that only professional performers and practitioners practising their craft at a high level of educational and artistic competence can provide students with opportunities to experience live performances and presentations. To ensure the artistic and educational integrity of these performances and to meet its charter to protect the young people in its care, the Department of Education and Training strongly recommends that all schools accept only those performances that have been authorised to perform in schools and colleges through the Performances For Schools program. To Find A Performance from the list of authorised performances, please go to our online database of over 200 performers and programs available to NSW government schools. This information also appears in the Authorised Performances For Schools Directory. Printed copies may be purchased by downloading and returning a Directory Order Form. To further assist you in preparing for your visiting performance, we have prepared some Guidelines for Schools. Please feel free to download this document for use in your school. Schools that host or attend an authorised performance also play a vital role in the ongoing success of the Performances For Schools Program. The feedback we receive from schools attending performances helps ensure that artistic and educational outcomes continue to be met and that performance programs remain current and relevant. 13 Un giorno in Italia is a journey through Italy presented in a fun and enjoyable manner and a way of showing the rich legacy that Italy embraces. The program uses a number of different elements such as music, songs, and masked characters from the Commedia dell Arte. Visual material is also incorporated in order to provide students with a glimpse of what Italy is all about. Students are given the possibility to broaden their understanding and perception of Italy, its history and traditions by participating in this fascinating and entertaining excursion. This performance can be conducted at your school any Wednesday or Friday during the school year. Cost depends on number of students, (minimum 100 students per performance) however it includes: performance, a fruit juice, brioche and a booklet for each student. Note: All audio visual and sound equipment is to be provided by the school. 14 Italian Festa on Norton March 25 th 2007 Co.As.It. is pleased to announce that in 2007 we will be joining the Leichhardt Chamber of Commerce as Cultural Partners of the Italian Festa on Norton. The event is an important opportunity for Italian-Australians to celebrate our language and culture. Co.As.It. believes the Festa is a great way to showcase the wonderful Italian work currently being done in NSW schools. A number of activities will take place throughout the festival. We would like you as teachers of Italian to participate by being involved in: CO.AS.IT. WINDOW - SHOWCASING THE WORK OF STUDENTS Send one representative item of work from each stage in your school. A selection of these will be on display in the Co.As.It. window and library on the day and for a period before and after the Norton Street Festa.
