1 PAOLO PELLEGRIN (articolo già edito sulla pagina facebook Scriptphotography). La Storia è un tempo fornito di senso. Se il significato dei giorni è cancellato, avremo un tempo sterilizzato dalle differenze, in cui l esperienza umana riflette se stessa come davanti a uno specchio vuoto. Ne abbiamo coscienza. Abbiamo imparato ad averne consapevolezza in questi mesi che, nel tentativo di contenere il diffondersi di una pandemia, ci ha visto costretti a una clausura forzata tra le mura di casa, costringendoci, nel bene o nel male, a rimodulare la gestione del tempo, degli interessi, del lavoro e persino degli affetti: un mondo improvvisamente affollato, contrapposto alla desolata solitudine del mondo là fuori, si è affacciato suggerendoci una nuova lettura dei rapporti interpersonali. Una importante fotografa italiana ha affermato che questo tempo non è fotografabile in quanto non succederebbe nulla. Con tutto il rispetto che nutro verso la fotografa, il suo parere non mi trova d accordo. Accetto tuttavia lo stimolo, la provocazione; e un affermazione che mi costringe a un ragionamento io la saluto come benvenuta. È vero, le città sono state deserte, spogliate forzatamente dai suoi protagonisti, dalle donne e dagli uomini che ogni giorno ne affollano le strade e le piazze e che grazie alla loro presenza le innervano di vita. Dove non ci sono donne e uomini non c è storia, non ci sono attività, non c è linfa, non c è racconto. Ecco la questione, il racconto. Come ha raccontato la fotografia questi giorni fatti di niente, scivolati uno dopo l altro come fumo di fumi? A differenza di altri fotografi professionisti, che imbastivano la narrazione presentandoci città deserte, scheletriche, evaporate dalla presenza umana riportando alla mente non già gli effetti del lockdown, quanto i ricordi della solitudine delle grandi città nei Ferragosto del passato mentre i fotografi amatoriali per meglio dire i medici e gli

2 infermieri fotoamatori impegnati nelle prime linee delle unità di terapia intensiva, si ritagliavano il ruolo di testimoniare da dentro gli ospedali gli effetti della tragedia, con immagini che ci sono giunte nel pieno della loro efficacia con buona pace sull opinione della famosa fotografa. Paolo Pellegrin dev essersi chiesto come la fotografia può rifornire di senso un tempo che dal punto di vista fotografico, come si obbietta, ne sarebbe privo e ha puntato l obiettivo della fotocamera girandolo dalla guerra alla sua famiglia. L isolamento, l impossibilità a muoversi assume il volto dell opportunità. Ginevra non è lontana, eppure a questo luogo tra le verdissime montagne basta poco per presentarsi come privo d orizzonte, come se l inquietudine del momento, i timori potessero trovare risposte nel disorientante silenzio della solitudine. Eppure, anche se si può desumere dalle stesse fotografie, quello di Pellegrin è tutto tranne che un diario della quarantena, quanto, piuttosto, il tentativo riuscito di tornate ad essere proprietario di un tempo sottratto alla famiglia a causa degli impegni. Un tempo ritrovato che trasuda il desiderio di intimità, che ora si offre perché sia gustata in profondità. I ritratti delle figlie, della moglie, così connesse nel luogo prescelto, svelano la vocazione a scovare nelle piccole cose il senso più universale dell appartenenza, di una vicinanza fisica che rende sterile qualunque parola d amore pronunciata a distanza. Pellegrin qui è nelle vesti di padre. Dismesse quelle del fotoreporter, e deposto l obiettivo che ha inquadrato innumerevoli rivolte ora assume il respiro di chi ha davanti a sé la più grandiosa delle esperienze: vivere lo stesso tempo della famiglia, sentire quanto più possibile le risa delle sue bambine, ascoltarne il respiro, vederle al gioco e lasciarsi conquistare dall insaziabile voglia d essere al centro dei suoi affetti, qui suggellato dal luminoso ritratto della moglie. Non è raro, ma accade, che per raccontare una storia che raggiunga la sensibilità di molti è necessario narrare le piccole cose, così che nell accenno della sincerità si trovi

3 un eco in cui riconoscersi, perché possiamo sentirci parte di un umanità dai valori condivisi. Con questo lavoro, assai distante da quelli che conosciamo e ammiriamo, abbiamo la sensazione che Pellegrin abbia voluto ribaltare momentaneamente il suo ruolo professionale, una deroga che vede lui offrire la cronaca di se stesso dopo anni in cui ha offerto eventi riguardanti altra gente, altri paesi. Questa, dunque, è la storia di un ritorno; è la storia di un fotografo che ha voluto e saputo fermare il tempo e piegarlo alla sua volontà. Forse, come si è detto, non sarà un vero e proprio diario della quarantena ma è certo che è da lì che nasce, dal desiderio di fornire di senso un tempo che ricorderemo a lungo.

If the meaning of the days is canceled, we will have a time sterilized by differences, in which human experience reflects itself as if in front of an empty mirror. We are aware of this. We ve learned to be aware of these in recent months that, in an attempt to contain the spread of a pandemic, has seen us forced to a forced enclosure our own houses, forcing us, for better or for worse, to remodel the management of time, interests, work and even affections: a world that is suddenly crowded, opposed to the desolate solitude of the world out there, has approached us by suggesting a new reading of interpersonal relationships. An important Italian photographer said that this time it ain t photographable as nothing would happen. With all the respect I have for the photographer, her opinion does not agree. 10 is true, the cities have been deserted, forcibly stripped by its protagonists, by the women and men who crowd the streets and squares every day and who, thanks to their presence, innervate them with life. Where there are no women and men there is no history, there are no activities, there is no lymph, there is no story. Here s the question, the story. How did photography say days made of nothing, slipped one after the other like smoke? Unlike other professional photographers, who based the narrative by presenting us deserted, skeletal cities, evaporated by the human presence bringing to mind not the effects of the lockdown, but the memories of the solitude of the big cities in some past August Bank Holyday while the amateur photographers to better say the doctors and photo amateurs nurses engaged in the front lines of the intensive care units, carved out the role of witnessing the effects of the tragedy from within the hospitals, with images that reached us in full effect with all due respect on the famous photographer. Paolo Pellegrin must have wondered how photography can make sense of a time that from a photographic point of view, as it is objected, would lack it and aimed the camera lens by shooting it from war to his family. Isolation, the inability to move takes on the face of opportunity. Geneva is not far away, yet in this place among the green mountains, it takes little to present itself as lacking in the horizon, as if the restlessness of the moment, fears could find answers in the disorienting silence of solitude. Yet, even if it can be deduced from the same photographs, Pellegrin s is anything but a quarantine diary, but rather the successful attempt to return to being the owner of a time stolen from the family because of the commitments. A rediscovered time that exudes

11 the desire for intimacy, which is now offered to be enjoyed in depth. The portraits of the daughters, of the wife, so connected in the chosen place, reveal the vocation to find the most universal sense of belonging in small things, of a physical closeness that renders any word of love pronounced remotely sterile. Pellegrin is here as a father. Decommissioned those of the photojournalist, and set the goal that has framed countless riots now takes the breath of those who have the greatest experience in front of them: live the same time as the family, hear the laughter of his girls as much as possible, listen to the breath, see them at play and let themselves be conquered by the insatiable desire to be at the center of his affections, here sealed by the bright portrait of his wife. It ain t uncommon, but it happens, that to tell a story that reaches the sensitivity of many it is necessary to narrate the little things, so that in the hint of sincerity there is an echo in which to recognize ourselves, because we can feel part of a humanity from shared values. With this work, very distant from those we know and admire, we have the feeling that Pellegrin wanted to temporarily overturn his professional role, a derogation that sees him offering the chronicle of himself after years in which he has offered events concerning other people, others countries. So, this is the story of a return; it s the story of a photographer who wanted and knew how to stop time and bend it to his will. Perhaps, as has been said, it will not be a real quarantine diary but it is certain that it is from there that it arises, from the desire to fill with sense a time that we will remember for a long time.
