1 Università degli Studi di Cagliari Dipartimento di Lettere, Lingue e Beni culturali STORIE DI TERRACOTTA 1 Call for papers Giornate di Studio Internazionali QUELLO CHE LE TERRECOTTE CI DICONO LA POLISEMIA DELLA COROPLASTICA NEL MEDITERRANEO ANTICO Cagliari, novembre 2022 Il convegno intende essere la prima di una serie di occasioni di discussione e di confronto per studiosi interessati allo studio delle dinamiche del sacro, con un focus particolare sul valore rivestito in questo ambito dalla coroplastica votiva nel Mediterraneo antico. Questa classe di materiali, estremamente versatile, presenta infatti una valenza polisemica che si manifesta in maniera più o meno diretta a seconda del linguaggio formale adottato, del contesto di rinvenimento e dell associazione con altri reperti. In questa prima occasione si è scelto volutamente un tema di ampio respiro, che permetta di ragionare sulla vasta gamma di significati attribuiti agli ex voto fittili e sulle relative informazioni ricavabili dall esame del linguaggio iconografico e iconologico, del contesto di pertinenza (di ambito cultuale, ma anche funerario) e delle implicazioni sociali legate a questa classe di materiali. Risultano fondamentali anche le riflessioni sugli aspetti materiali e tecnici, a partire dall analisi delle dinamiche produttive con i relativi risvolti di carattere economico, le indagini archeometriche condotte sui reperti, fino ad arrivare

2 agli interventi di restauro atti a preservarne l integrità o a tentare di restituirne il valore originale. A questi temi si ricollega quello della decontestualizzazione delle terrecotte per ragioni espositive o collezionistiche e della commercializzazione degli ex voto in epoca moderna, con le relative implicazioni a livello normativo e di tutela dei beni culturali. Sulla base di questi spunti di riflessione, il convegno si articolerà in aree tematiche nell ambito delle quali la polisemia delle terrecotte verrà affrontata dalle seguenti prospettive, senza escludere la possibilità di accogliere eventuali ulteriori idee di approfondimento: - Gli ex voto fittili come strumento di comunicazione rituale alla luce del dato iconografico e iconologico Quest area tematica è dedicata ai significati rituali e votivi delle terrecotte, ricostruibili sulla base dell analisi degli aspetti iconografici e iconologici. Le immagini veicolate dalle terrecotte possono essere considerate come un documento complesso dotato di un ampia rete di rapporti all interno del contesto storico e culturale nel quale gli ex voto fittili vengono utilizzati. L analisi di questi aspetti consente di ottenere molteplici informazioni, fra le quali i diversi significati che una iconografia può assumere in base al contesto, l atteggiamento religioso dei dedicanti e l ambito di appartenenza delle divinità destinatarie. - Tra produzione e dedica: committenti, artigiani e contesti di provenienza In quest area tematica si porrà l attenzione sull importanza del contesto sociale e produttivo all interno del quale gli ex voto fittili si inseriscono. Testimonianza delle pratiche religiose e delle tendenze artistiche del periodo di inquadramento, le terrecotte rappresentano un importante indicatore di dinamiche socio-culturali ed economiche. L esame di questi manufatti e del contesto di provenienza permette infatti di risalire non solo alle tipologie e alle fasce sociali di appartenenza dei committenti, di volta in volta coinvolti nella dedica, ma anche ai meccanismi relativi ai processi produttivi, alla diffusione di tecniche e forme artigianali e all attestazione di maestranze itineranti e matrici, attraverso le quali vengono veicolate idee e repertori iconografici. - Aspetti produttivi e tecnici: dall argilla al prodotto finito Quando si parla di produzione non si può prescindere dall esame degli aspetti più tecnici legati a questa classe di manufatti. Per questo motivo, questa area tematica si focalizzerà sugli impianti produttivi e sulle informazioni tecniche desumibili dalle analisi archeometriche, relative ad esempio ai bacini di captazione delle argille, alle tecniche di fabbricazione e di cottura, alla presenza di pigmenti o sostanze organiche, ecc.. - Gli ex voto e il loro valore attraverso il tempo: dalla ricezione alla ricettazione Questa sezione è incentrata sul valore, non solo economico, che le terrecotte votive assumono dopo il loro utilizzo come ex voto fittili. Si terranno in considerazione il loro riuso in altre epoche dell antichità, la commercializzazione nel mercato antiquario che porta anche alla produzione di falsi, ma anche i diversi modi in cui le terrecotte vengono recepite o rielaborate in epoca moderna e contemporanea. Saranno ben accette anche presentazioni di contesti nuovi e/o inediti, nei quali i reperti coroplastici rivestono un ruolo importante, o nuove ipotesi interpretative su temi già noti. Gli studiosi interessati a presentare un contributo possono inviare un abstract di 300 parole max. (corredato di titolo, recapito e breve nota biografica dell autore) al seguente indirizzo

3 entro e non oltre il giorno 20 giugno L'accettazione delle proposte sarà comunicata via alle persone interessate entro il mese di agosto Le presentazioni potranno avere una durata massima di 20 minuti. Il convegno si terrà presso il complesso della Cittadella dei Musei sede staccata del Dipartimento di Lettere, Lingue e Beni culturali dell Università di Cagliari, fatta salva la possibilità di utilizzare una piattaforma telematica nel caso l evoluzione dell attuale situazione sanitaria lo richiedesse. Per i relatori non sono previste quote di iscrizione e, sebbene l organizzazione non possa farsi carico di eventuali rimborsi, verranno indicate strutture convenzionate presso le quali poter soggiornare a prezzi agevolati. È prevista la pubblicazione degli atti, previa fase di valutazione con doppio referaggio cieco dei singoli contributi. 4 University of Cagliari Department of Humanities, Languages, and Cultural Heritage STORIE DI TERRACOTTA 1 Call for Papers International Conference WHAT CAN TERRACOTTAS TELL US: COROPLASTIC POLYSEMY IN THE ANCIENT MEDITERRANEAN Cagliari, 10 th -12 th November 2022 This conference is planned as the first in a series of scholarly events dedicated to the study of votives, with a special focus on the role of figurative terracottas in the ancient Mediterranean. These highly versatile artifacts had a polysemic value that was manifested relatively directly by the formal language used, by their contexts of their discovery, and by their association with other votive objects. For this first event, a wide-ranging theme was deliberately chosen that enables multiple explorations into the vast range of meanings that can be attributed to terracotta votives by an examination of their iconographic and iconological language, of their relevant contexts, and of the social implications associated with this class of objects. Topics that consider the material and technical aspects of terracottas also will be included, such as analyses of production dynamics and their related economic

5 implications, archaeometric investigations conducted on terracottas, restoration interventions aimed at preserving their integrity, or attempts to restore their original value. Related to these issues is that of the decontextualization of terracottas for exhibition or collection purposes and the marketing of terracottas in the modern era, with its relative implications in terms of legislation and the protection of cultural heritage. Based on these insights, the conference will be divided into thematic areas within which the polysemy of terracotta will be addressed from the following perspectives, without excluding the possibility of accepting any further ideas for further study: - Votive figurines as a means of ritual communication based on iconographic and iconological data This thematic area is dedicated to the ritual and votive meanings of terracottas, which can be reconstructed on the basis of the analysis of their iconographic and iconological aspects. The images conveyed by terracottas can be considered as a complex document with a wide network of relationships within the historical and cultural context in which these clay offerings are used. An analysis of these aspects can yield multiple layers of information, including the different meanings that an iconography can assume based on its context, the religious attitudes of the dedicators, and the orbit of belonging of the recipient deities. - Between production and dedication: clients, craftsmen and contexts of origin In this thematic area, attention will be paid to the importance of the social and production context within which these clay votive offerings were inserted. As a testament to the religious practices and artistic trends of the period of classification, terracottas represent an important indicator of sociocultural and economic dynamics. In fact, the examination of these artefacts and their context of origin allows us to trace not only the typologies and social groups to which their dedicants belonged, but also the mechanisms relating to production processes, the diffusion of techniques and artisanal forms, and the attestation of itinerant workers and moulds through which ideas and iconographic repertoires were disseminated. - Production and technical aspects from clay to the final product When it comes to production, one cannot ignore an examination of the more technical aspects related to this class of artifacts. For this reason, this thematic area will focus on production facilities and on the technical information that can be deduced from archaeometric analyses on clay sources, manufacturing and firing techniques, the use of pigments, or organic substances, etc. - Votive offerings and their value through time: from interpretation to illicit trade This section focuses on the value, not only economic, that votive terracottas take on after their original use as clay offering. Their reuse in other periods of antiquity, and their presence in the antiquities market that also lead to the production of forgeries, will be taken into consideration, as well as the different ways in which terracottas were received, or reworked, in modern and contemporary times. Presentations of new and unpublished contexts with terracotta finds, or new considerations on known themes will also be welcome. Abstracts of about 300 words should be submitted by June 20, 2022, to the following address coroplastica2022cagliari@gmail.com in Word format. Please include the title of your paper, your name, affiliation, if any, and your address. Notifications of acceptance will be circulated in August 2022.

6 Presentations should not exceed 20 minutes. The conference will take place at the Cittadella dei Musei - Department of Humanities, Languages, and Cultural Heritage of the University of Cagliari, with the possibility of an online meeting should the ongoing health situation require it. There are no registration fees. The University of Cagliari is responsible for any reimbursement for travel or lodging, but the organizers can provide a list of hotels and B&Bs with reduced prices. The publication of the proceedings is planned, pending recommendation of the individual papers by a double-blind peer review process.
