(pol.) o To form the past participle with verbs ending in ciare or giare: mangiare Noi abbiamo mangiato la pizza. We ate pizza. cominciare Io ho cominciato i miei compiti. I started my homework. o In other past participles, an i is added to retain the soft sound: conoscere Lei ha conosciuto Antonia anni fa. She met Antonia years ago. o Note: conoscere in the passato prossimo means to meet someone for the first time. 3 2.3. Il passato prossimo (con essere) o Some verbs are conjugated with the auxiliary verb essere rather than with avere in the passato prossimo. Verbs conjugated with AVERE Angela ha scritto una lettera. Angela wrote a letter. Verbs conjugated with ESSERE Giovanni è venuto qui ieri. Giovanni came here yesterday. Voi avete già mangiato. Loro sono partiti alle 20:00. You (pl.) have already eaten. They left at 8 pm. o The past participle is formed in the same way: -are = ato, -ere = uto, ire =ito. o There past participles, like adjectives, agree in number and gender with the subject. o Verbs of motion (e.g. andare, venire, partire), lack of motion (e.g. restare, stare, rimanere), and change of state (e.g. nascere, morire, diventare) require the auxiliary verb essere. Paolo è andato a scuola. vs. Paola è andata al cinema. Franco e Giuseppe sono arrivati da Roma. vs. Franca e Giuseppina sono arrivate da Firenze. Masculine Plural Agreement Pattern: Laura, ti sono piaciuti gli anelli? Dottor Bianchi, Le sono piaciuti gli orologi? Feminine Singular Agreement Pattern: Laura, ti è piaciuta la collana? Dottor Bianchi, Le è piaciuta la cravatta? Feminine Plural Agreement Pattern: Laura, ti sono piaciute le collane? Dottor Bianchi, Le sono piaciute le cravatte? Sarah, did you like the ring? I verbi modali al passato prossimo o Dovere, volere, potere are irregular in the present, but regular in the passato prossimo. o The auxiliary of the modal verb is determined by the infinitive that follows. It takes avere or essere depending on which of the two auxiliary verbs the infinitive that follows would normally take. Luca ha dovuto cantare durante lo spettacolo. Il bambino è potuto venire alla festa. Luca had to sing during the show. The kid was able to come to the party. 4

5 2.6. I verbi riflessivi al passato o Reflexive verbs are conjugated with essere in compound tenses like the passato prossimo. Therefore, they also agree in number and gender with the subject. L uomo si è alzato tardi. I miei amici si sono divertiti. La donna si è alzata tardi. Le mie amiche si sono divertite.
