2 Direct Object Pronouns: A Brief Review A. Review the main parts of grammar 1. Noun = Person, place, thing 2. Verb = Action word 3. Pronoun = Takes the place of the noun B. Review of the three main parts of a sentence. 1. Subject = Doer of action 2. Verb = Action word in the sentence 3. Direct Object = receiver of the action C. The Order of Things Generally, a sentence in English and Italian is ordered in the following way: Subject Verb Object. For example: Dario guarda la televisione. Subject Verb Direct Object D. The Person, Number and Gender of things As we have seen, in grammar speak, Subjects, Verbs and Objects have a person, number and gender attached to them. 1. How do we know if something is masculine or feminine? a. The gender of Italian nouns is usually provided by the last vowel: i. o = masculine singular i = masculine plural ii. a = feminine singular e = feminine plural b. There are times that the last vowel does not provide a clue, then look to the article: i. il, lo = masculine singular la = feminine singular ii. i, gli = masculine plural le = feminine plural iii. un, uno = masculine singular una = feminine singular c. If these two do not provide a clue, then you will need to look it up in the dictionary or on 2. How do we know if something is singular or plural?

How do we know, if it is a FIRST, SECOND or THIRD person? 1 st => Always involves the I 2 nd => Always involves the YOU 3 rd => Always involves the HE - SHE - IT Adam Rule: If no I or You it must be third person!!! E. Subject Pronouns Pronoun => Takes the place of a noun Subject Pronouns Singular Plural ENG. Direct Object When using the subject pronoun, the NOUN for the subject is removed. Dario = subject => 3 rd Singular => Lui Lui guarda la televisione. S V D O

Direct Object La televisione = D.O. => 3 rd, singular, feminine => La Present Tense: Lui guarda la the DO goes before the conjugated verb Lui la guarda. Future Tense: Lui guarderà la the DO goes before the conjugated verb Lui la guarderà. Passato Prossimo: With the Passato Prossimo there is a twist: The 1:3 as 2:4 rule For Example: Dario ha guardato la televisione. (1:Dario) [2:la] (3:ha) [4:guardata] => Dario la ha guardata = Dario l ha guardata.

5 The following exercises ought to be completed under test like conditions to determine whether you have thoroughly understood the topic. A. In this exercise all you are going to do is translate the sentence into Italian according to the model. Example: Mara gave her keys to Dario. This breakdown is done in order to translate the sentence into Italian. Mara = Subject, 3 rd Singular Feminine Gave = Verb, Passato Prossimo tense, avere verb because there is a direct object, 3 rd sing. Keys = Receiver of the action the object being given Direct Object, 3 rd pl. feminine. o Her = adjective that goes with keys since keys is feminine plural, her will be too. To Dario = A Dario ANSWER: Mara ha dato le sue chiavi a Dario. 1. I will watch television at home this evening. [At home = a casa] 2. She will lend her car to Dario. [To lend = prestare] 3. They watched us play last evening. [Play = giocare] / [Last evening = ieri sera] 4. You guys read the book in school. [In school = a scuola] 5. He eats pizza on Wednesdays. [On Wednesdays = every Wednesday = Ogni mercoledì] Please scroll down to review the answer. B. Rewrite the sentences using the Direct Object Pronoun according to the model. Mara ha dato le sue chiavi a Dario. 1. Mara = Subject, 3 rd Singular Feminine 2. Ha dato = Verb, Passato Prossimo tense, avere verb because there is a direct object, 3 rd sing. 3. Le chiavi = Receiver of the action the object being given Direct Object, 3 rd pl. feminine. => Le a. Le sue = adjective that goes with keys since keys is feminine plural, her will be too. 4. A Dario = in grammar speak this would be an Indirect Object No need to worry about this! Answer: Step One: Remove the Direct Object noun and replace with the Direct Object Pronoun le. Mara ha dato le sue chiavi a Dario. = Mara ha dato le a Dario Step Two: Rewrite placing the Direct Object Pronoun le in the proper place. Mara le ha dat a Dario Step Three: Apply the 1:3 to 2:4 rule (1: Mara = 3rd singular) le (3: ha = 3rd singular) dat a Dario. Mara (2: le = 3 rd feminine plural) ha (4: dat = feminine plural = date) a Dario. ANSWER: Mara le ha date a Dario.

6 B. 1. Io guarderò la televisione a casa stasera. 2. Lei persterà la sua automobile a Dario. 3. Loro hanno guardato noi giocare ieri sera. 4. Voi avete letto il libro a scuola. 5.
