PATENTE O PATENTI ULTERIORI INFORMAZIONI A, B As to fall 2011, Prof. Gianni is co-author of over 330 scientific papers published by peerreviewed journals, with a cumulative IF over 800, and over 3300 citations. Throughout his career, Prof. Gianni has been involved in both clinical and laboratory research programs in hematology and oncology, thus playing from the beginning a role in the field of translational medicine. Among the first to apply molecular biology techniques to the study of human genetic diseases, he initially contributed to define the molecular pathogenesis of thalassemias. He then moved to the field of hematology/oncology where his laboratory experience with viral vectors and human hematopoietic stem cells has led to many successful clinical applications. In particular, his group first documented that growth-factor-mobilized hematopoietic stem cells are optimal substitutes for bone-marrow-explanted hematopoietic stem cells. Current guidelines for hematopoietic stem cells transplants (entailing the use of circulating hematopoietic stem cells for virtually all autografting procedures, and for a growing number of allografts) mainly stems from the original findings from his group. More recently, by harnessing the ability of intravenously injected hematopoietic stem cells to efficiently home into tumor tissue, his group is exploiting the ability of genetically engineered stem cells to act as anticancer agents. A pilot study with armed stem cells in cancer patients has been recently scheduled.
