The end-user ESSs 13 End-user ESS and the role of the DSO DSO do not provide just energy transportation The DSO is the guarantor of the power quality (limits or values within which the voltage characteristics must remain at any point of delivery) and of the quality of service. Generation + ESS can do the same, with same performances? YES, but with higher costs. So, we expect that the most parts of the end-user ESS will be grid connected and used for the self consumption enhancement. The DSO will transport less energy (nothing, in the extreme cases) to the customer with ESS, but it will remain the responsible for the power/services quality. 14
Self consumption enhancement The impact on the distribution network The estimation of the energy exchange profiles is becoming crucial for network operation, particularly in case of strong penetration of dispersed generation. Load forecast Generation forecast (forecast of solar irradiation, wind speed, cloud, rain, wind gusts etc.) The self consumption enhancement may complicate the generation forecast without any benefits on the reduction of the morning and evening peaks. 15
