RUTELLA SERGIO Sergio Rutella, M.D. Ph.D., has been awarded the National Habilitation to the position of Associate Professor of Hematology/Oncology/Rheumatology in December 2013. He is currently Assistant Professor of Hematology at the Catholic University Med. School in Rome, and Director of the Immunohematology and Blood Transfusion Service at the IRCCS Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital in Rome, Italy. Dr Rutella is a physician-scientist with a long-term research experience in the immunological aspects of malignant hematology and in the cellular and molecular mediators of inflammation. Dr Rutella received his M.D. from the Catholic University of Rome in 1993 (summa cum laude), followed by residency and fellowship in Hematology in 1997 (with honors) and by a Ph.D. diploma in Experimental Hematology in 2001 (with honors). To date, Dr Rutella has published 173 scientific articles (5 editorials, 26 reviews, 124 full-length papers, 18 research letters) and 11 book chapters, mainly in the fields of immune tolerance and inflammation, hematological malignancies and stem cell transplantation (cumulative I.F. [2012] = 811.256; current H-index = 40) [Google Scholar]. In 2011, he has been included among the "100 Top Italian Scientists" (area: Hematology and Medicine; http://www.topitalianscientists.org/top_italian_scientists_via-academy.aspx). Dr Rutella has gained extensive experience in the management and appraisal of research staff, and has prepared and submitted successful grant applications to National funding bodies (Italian Association for Cancer Research, FILAS, Ministry of University and Scientific Research - MIUR/PRIN). Dr Rutella has given invited seminars at academic institutions in Italy (Univ of Bologna, Urbino, Milan), France (Burgundy) and the United Kingdom (Univ of Glasgow, Univ of Southampton, Univ of Oxford) and has lectured at national and international scientific meetings.
