2 Orso (meaning bear in Italian) was a mutt that used to live outside the Hotel Gritti Palace in Venice. Joe Allen, New York restaurateur, loved that dog. According to him, the story was that the dog belonged to a gondolier, but that you would see him everywhere. The concierge at the Gritti Palace used to feed him, and the dog struck up a friendship with everyone who stayed at the hotel including Joe. Orso died the same month that Joe opened the original Orso restaurant in west 46th street in 1983 and a picture of him was hung on the wall so that he would never be forgotten. He rests under a flagstone outside of the Gritti Palace.
