2 L evoluzione del mondo contadino dagli anni 50 ad oggi Francesco Cassani fu uno dei forse quattro o cinque interpreti reali dello sviluppo della meccanizzazione agricola italiana, certo fra i più coraggiosi e avveniristi, anticipatore delle esigenze future di un agricoltura quale solo da pochi anni si va realizzando. Our journey goes from the romanticism of the story in black and white to the modernity of the Internet and social media.

3 Il trattore e la famiglia contadina: Immagini di un cambiamento La struttura e l evoluzione della famiglia agricola in Italia sono intimamente connesse con lo sviluppo delle nuove tecnologie e con il progressivo processo di meccanizzazione e motorizzazione dell agricoltura stessa sviluppatosi nel nostro Paese. Fino agli inizi del Novecento l agricoltura italiana era prevalentemente tradizionale, basata principalmente sul lavoro manuale e sulla trazione animale. In quello stesso periodo, però, cominciarono ad essere importati macchinari e attrezzature agricole, che consentirono di diminuire il lavoro umano e di aumentare la produttività dei campi (come, ad esempio, seminatrici, falciatrici, mietilegatrici...). Successivamente, dagli anni Venti, alcuni imprenditori italiani, tra i quali Francesco Cassani, iniziarono a produrre trattrici, motori e attrezzature che diedero un forte impulso alla motorizzazione dell agricoltura stessa. Fu, però, solo a partire dal secondo dopoguerra, negli anni Cinquanta del Novecento, che la motorizzazione dell agricoltura divenne dirompente, producendo effetti importanti sia dal punto di vista dell aumento della produttività agricola (con un incremento esponenziale dei trattori e degli attrezzi agricoli motorizzati, come le motofalciatrici), sia dal punto di vista sociale e culturale. Anche la famiglia agricola risentì di questa vera e propria rivoluzione tecnologica, che modificò la struttura sociale e le prospettive della famiglia stessa. Essa, infatti, era sempre stata una struttura tradizionalista, adattata allo specifico territorio rurale, ma con un forte legame comunitario e senso di appartenenza sociale; era una struttura gerarchica, necessariamente numerosa e allo stesso tempo rigida, poiché si basava sui ritmi delle colture tradizionali e sulle convenzioni sociali della comunità agricola. Il processo di meccanizzazione prima e, soprattutto, di motorizzazione poi, modificarono tutto ciò. La presenza di macchine agricole venne prima osteggiata, in quanto toglieva lavoro ai braccianti agricoli e ai contoterzisti, ma, a partire dalla fine degli anni Cinquanta, si rese necessaria per sopperire alla mancanza di manodopera conseguente alla forte emigrazione in città: i figli dei contadini cercavano maggiore fortuna nelle fabbriche, abbandonando così i campi e allentando i legami con il loro territorio di origine. Il materiale selezionato dell Archivio Storico SAME (tra cui depliant, calendari, cataloghi, fotografie e house organ), illustra da una parte la trasformazione della famiglia agricola, dalle prime innovazioni relative alla meccanizzazione del lavoro nei campi all introduzione del trattore, e, dall altra, il valore dato dalla famiglia stessa al nuovo mezzo, il trattore, che diventa il centro delle attività lavorative e inserisce la stessa all interno della modernità. The tractor and the agricultural family: Images of changing times The structure and evolution of the Italian agricultural family in Italy are intrinsically connected with the development of new technologies and the progressive process of mechanisation and motorisation sweeping through agriculture in Italy. Up until the start of the 20 th century, agriculture in Italy was predominantly traditional, based mainly on manual labour and animal traction. It was at this time, however, that agricultural machinery and implements (such as seeders, mowers, reaper binders etc.) were first imported into Italy, which reduced the amount of human labour needed and increased the productivity of the land. Subsequently, in the 1920s, a number of Italian entrepreneurs, among whom Francesco Cassani, began producing tractors, engines and implements which contributed substantially to mechanising agriculture in the country. It was, however, only after the second world war in the 1950s to be precise that mechanised agriculture truly took off, with significant ramifications not only in terms of increased productivity (with an exponential increase in the number of tractors and mechanised agricultural machines such as motor mowers), but also from social and cultural perspectives. The agricultural family was also affected by this very real technological revolution, which altered the social structure and prospects of the family itself. The agricultural family had always been traditional in structure, suited specifically to its rural territory but with strong ties with the community and a deep sense of being part of society. It was a hierarchical structure, numerous by necessity and rigidly ordered, as it was based on the rhythms of traditional crops and adhered to the social conventions of the farming community. The process of mechanisation and, later and to a much greater extent, the introduction of motorisation in agriculture, changed all of this. While reviled at first, as they took work away from manual agricultural labourers and contract farmers, from the 1950s, agricultural machines became a necessity to make up for the labour shortage caused by the mass exodus away from rural areas and towards cities: the children of farmers went in search of better prosperity in the factories, leaving the fields behind and loosening their ties with their original territory. The material selected by the SAME Historical Archive (including leaflets, calendars, catalogues, photograph s and the company s own house organ) illustrates this transformation of the agricultural family on the one hand, from the earliest innovations in mechanised farm work to the introduction of the while on the other reveals the value attributed by the agricultural family to this new tool the tractor which was to become central to the work of the family and would carry the family itself into the modern age.

Una vera rivoluzione tecnologica resa sempre più necessaria per la crescente mancanza di manodopera causata dall emigrazione in città. Ad andarsene sono soprattutto le nuove generazioni mettendo così in crisi la struttura numerosa e gerarchica da secoli alla base della famiglia agricola. As the gap in the supply of manpower widened due to emigration to cities, an authentic technological revolution became ever more necessary. 5 Il boom economico e le nuove macchine Il miracolo economico, iniziato a metà degli anni 50 ha il suo culmine, il cosiddetto BOOM, negli anni tra il 1958 e il È in questi anni che si modificano radicalmente i modelli di vita della società contadina, a partire dalla famiglia. Accanto a quella allargata o PATRIARCALE, tipica del mondo rurale e ad esso funzionale, fa la sua comparsa la famiglia ristretta a pochi membri o NUCLEARE (marito, moglie e pochi figli). Se in città l avvento degli elettrodomestici facilita molto i lavori affidati alla casalinga, in campagna la diffusione del trattore rivoluziona la gestione delle aziende agricole. It was in those years that the lifestyle models of farming society radically changed starting with the family. The extended or PATRIARCHAL family, typical of the rural world to which it was functional, was joined by the small family with few members, a.k.a. NUCLEAR, (husband, wife and a few children). While in the city the advent of electrical appliances made housewives tasks much easier, in the country the spread of the tractor revolutionised the management of farming enterprises. Anche nelle aree agricole, pur risparmiate dall ondata dei movimenti di protesta, l introduzione di macchinari sempre più evoluti porta un sostanziale cambiamento di abitudini, per cui i ruoli tradizionalmente distinti fra uomo e donna si uniformano, determinando una partecipazione maggiore e più diretta della donna alla vita dell azienda e alla sua conduzione. Gli anni 70 Social Transformations and Technical Innovation The central figure of this decade was the woman, protagonist of the clash of opinions that changed the face of Italian society. Although agriculture was not targeted by the wave of protest movements, the introduction of ever more advanced machinery led to a substantial change in customs; therefore, the roles traditionally distinguished as male or female became uniform. This brought women to participate more, and in a more direct way, in company life and its management. FOTO STUDIO) La specializzazione dei ruoli e dei mezzi Negli anni 80, l agricoltura italiana rivede ancora una volta il suo assetto, anche in seguito al varo delle prime politiche europee e al passaggio delle competenze in materia agricola alle regioni. Scompare definitivamente la mezzadria, e i proprietari terrieri devono fronteggiare la massiccia invasione di prodotti agroalimentari provenienti dall estero a prezzi assai inferiori. La risposta si chiama specializzazione (ortofrutta, viticoltura) e un grande supporto, in questo, è fornito da una serie di macchine di nuova concezione, ricche di innovazioni tecnologiche. FOTO STUDIO) Gli anni 80 Specialisation of Roles and Vehicles In the 1980s, Italian agriculture changed its orientation once again in the wake of the passing of the first European policies and after agricultural competency went to the regions. Sharecropping ended for good, and landowners had to face the mass invasion of food and agricultural products that came from abroad at much lower prices. The answer was specialisation (fruit and vegetables, viticulture), and a series of newly conceived machines rich in technological innovation greatly aided this cause. S inverte finalmente anche il trend dell esodo agricolo e rurale. Le nuove generazioni, e in particolare le donne, guardano per la prima volta all azienda agricola di famiglia come un opportunità e una sfida, da vincere investendo sulla qualità. Partendo dalle persone (aumentano le iscrizioni alle facoltà di agraria, con specializzazioni e master di alto profilo), per arrivare alle colture e ai macchinari. The base principle was a tried and true concept strength lies in numbers. Finally, the agricultural and rural exodus trend turned around. For the first time, the new generations and especially women looked to the family farming enterprise as an opportunity and a challenge to be achieved by investing in quality. Enrolment in university Agriculture Departments increased, with specialisations and high-profile master s degrees. Now people would be the foundation, building up to include cultivation and the machinery. Serve una nuova cultura del lavoro agricolo e nuovi strumenti tecnologici in grado di supportarla. Una nuova alleanza tra l uomo, la sua famiglia, i suoi mezzi e la sua terra, intesa ormai non più solo come campo, ma come pianeta. Gli anni 2000 The New Millennium and Going Back to the Earth In the new millennium, we face a scenario in which the new urgencies to bring together with those of production and employment for the family and the company are environmental. Emphasis is on management of the territory, use of resources and safeguarding the landscape. We need a new farm work culture and new technological tools to back it. We are talking about a new alliance between man, his family, machinery and the earth no longer taken to mean just the field, but planet Earth.
