In 2007 he received his Ph.D. in Philosophy of Law (curriculum: Law and Society) at the University of Milan, discussing a thesis on fundamental rights and new reproductive technologies. Between 2006 and 2007 he spent a year as visiting researcher at the Hoover Chair of Economic and Social Ethics of the Catholic University of Louvain-la-Neuve, where he worked under the supervision of prof. Philippe Van Parijs. Since 2007 he is post-doctoral research fellow in philosophy of law at the University of Milan, where he works under the supervision of prof. Alessandra Facchi. He is one of the organizers of the Permanent Seminar on Subjects and Conflicts of Rights (since 2005) and of the Reading Group in Political Philosophy (since 2009). In the academic years and he taught, together with prof. Federico Gustavo Pizzetti, a seminar course in Bioethics and Biolaw for students of the Faculty of Poliical Economic and Social Sciences. In 2013 he obtained the National Scientific Qualification for the position of Associate Professor in Philosophy of Law. He is a member of the Scientific Committee of Phenomenology and Mind (published by the University Vita-Salute San Raffaele) and Assistant Editor of the Rivista di filosofia del diritto/journal of Legal Philosophy (published by Il Mulino). He is a member of the Italian Society for the Philosophy of Law. He collaborates with the Centro Einaudi of Turin and is one of the founding members of its Comparative Politics and Public Philosophy Lab directed by prof. Maurizio Ferrera, that promotes dialogue between scholars in political science and philosophy and publishes a series of working papers. Since 2008 he collaborates, as a tutor and, lately, as a professor, to the non-academic Master in Civic Education directed by prof. Maurizio Viroli and organized by ETHICA (Asti) with the support of the James Madison Program of Princeton University. His research focuses mainly on the principles of public ethics that model and/or should model legislation and public action in such fields as market regulation, fiscal and social policies, the regulation of medical practice and research and criminal law (in particular as it restricts individual freedom). More specifically he devoted a large part of his research to the idea of equality and its implications, since his degree thesis up to more recent works on equality of opportunity, that is the topic of his first book (2011a, cf. 2008a, 2009c, 2013b, 2015a)*, State neutrality (see 2010b, 2010d), basic income (see 2012b, 2012c) and the foundations of redistributive fiscal and social policies (2015b, 2015c). He is now finishing a book on egalitarianism and is under contract with the Italian publisher Laterza for an anthology of classical texts on equality. As regards the issues of the regulation of medicine and criminal law he worked on such topics as abortion, IVF, and eugenics (v. 2004a, 2007a, 2010a, 2012a, 2014a, 2014c). While mainly interested in contributing with original arguments to the debate on the topics that have been mentioned, he also devoted some work to contemporary classics of philosophy and legal theory such as John Rawls, Jürgen Habermas and H.L.A. Hart (see 2009b, 2009d, 2010c, 2013a, 2013e) and is one of the editors of a book on contemporary theories in sociology of law (2009a), to which he contributed with the chapter on Habermas. Finally, he is interested in the legal treatment of sexual orientation and gender identity over time and in the history, claims and strategies of the LGBT movement. * References are to the list of publications below.
