41 La fase 1 Who should apply? The SME instrument caters for two ideal applicant profiles: 1. An SME that has been created a few years ago with the aim to commercialise knowledge developed through R&D in order to meet a societal demand or to fill an identified and already researched market niche; or 2. A dynamic young or mature SME that has identified a new market opportunity and has developed a concept to exploit it through an innovative product or service 41

42 La fase 1 What is fundable in Phase 1? Technology watch: previous projects / previous IPR (freedom to operate analysis) Market and or business model testing and assessment Partners search, if needed. Full development of a commercialisation strategy or a preliminary draft of an innovation business plan. In other words: Provide a satisfactory answer to the question: how this business will be a success? A detailed work plan for a Phase 2 application. This is required if the result of a Phase 1 grant shall lead to a Phase 2 (co)funding application. - Other related tasks 42

44 Il formulario Summary Briefly summarise your project and intended business concept, highlight the technical and/or innovative achievements and future challenges. Describe the expected product/solutions and the commercial potential. Describe the potential users/customers and their needs and how these needs are met through the outcome of the project, if it eventually becomes fully funded. Include in the description also the expected European dimension of the business concept. Include a brief description of the intended outcome of Phase 1, and your intentions regarding potential Phase 2 funding. max ½ A4 page 44

Describe the industrial/economic/social problem to be solved and/or business opportunity you intend to address. Describe the specific objectives for the feasibility study, including the elaboration of a business plan, which should be clear, measurable, realistic and achievable within the duration of the project. Objectives should be consistent with the expected exploitation and impact of the project. 45

Concept and approach Explain how your innovative solution will solve the problem and/or use the business opportunity. Describe the current stage of development of the innovation. Where appropriate, mention key milestones that led to the current stage (e.g. prototype, field trials, pilot studies with intended end-users and/or potential clients). 46

Explain the envisaged solution (products, processes, services etc.) and highlight the advantage of your (expected) solution with respect to competing solutions; how does it provide more added value to potential customers? Provide a preliminary comparison with alternatives solving the same or similar problems. If appropriate, compare to state-of-theart research and known commercial initiatives. This could include costs, environmental benefits, ease-ofuse or other features. 49

How does the proposed work in Phase 1 of the SME instrument fit into the overall plan to reach market? 54

Refer to the results of any patent search carried out. Have you conducted a freedom to operate analysis, and if yes what has been the result? Outline the status and the strategy for knowledge protection. If by patent, has a patent application already been filed or is there potential for patent application? 55

57 Il formulario IMPLEMENTATION Work plan Work package and deliverable Please provide the project plan comprising one work package with one deliverable (i.e. elaboration of the feasibility report including a business plan) Definitions: Work package means a major sub-division of the proposed project. In the case of the SME instrument phase 1, there is only one work package describing the work to be done for the feasibility assessment. Deliverable means a distinct output of the project. In the case of the SME instrument phase 1 the output is the feasibility report, including a business plan. 57
