Effetto Pari/Dispari meno marcato
Abbondanze dei differenti Nuclei nella Materia Ordinaria del Sistema Solare: Nucleosintesi primaria NucleoSintesi nelle Stelle Z H He Li Be B C N O 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Elementi originali nati dalla nucleosintesi primaria Elementi saltati dal processo principale della nucleosintesi [3 Carbonio + Elementi generati dalla nucleosintesi [3 C + C O
Nucleosintesi dal Big Bang (BBN) Poco minuti dopo il Big Bang si formano p, n (ed e-). I n isolati decadono n-> pe- ( n~885 s) In dipendenza dalla T e np,n e alcuni parametri di fisica delle particelle (come N ) parte dei neutroni si unisce a p: p+n 2D + MeV) (fragile, brucia facilmente) D+n 3T + (Radioattivo ~12 y) D+p 3He + 3 T + p 4He + 3 He + n 4He + A=5 non ha nuclidi nemmeno radioattivi) 3 T +4He 7Li+ 7 7 3 He +4He 7Be+ EC: Be + e Li + A=8 non ha nuclidi (nemmeno radioattivi): BBN si ferma: Be e B praticamente assenti (molti OdG meno di 7Li )
Nucleosintesi nelle stelle Nelle stelle sono creati gli elementi più pesanti fino al Fe-Ni A seguire la reazione pp che trasforma 4p He (2e+2 ) ad alta T si innesca la catena : ->84Be + -> 126C successivamente a T più elevata 12 16 48 52 C + -> O Cr + -> Fe 6 8 24 26 16 20 O + -> Ne 52 56 8 10 Fe + -> Ni 26 28 20 24 Ne + -> Mg 10 12 Ulteriori sottraggono 24 28 Mg + -> 14Si energia 12 28 Si + -> 14 36 18 36 Ar 18 40 20 44 22 48 24 Ar + -> Ca 20 Ca + -> Ti 22 Ti + -> Cr 40 44 Poi 56 56 28 Ni decade in Co e poi in 27 56 26 Fe
Energia di legame per nucleone vs A
Effetto dei Processi di SPALLAZIONE ( SPALLATION ) Frammentazione di un nucleo relativistico in un urto con protone (od un altro Nucleo) A + p A1 + A2 Etot (A) = A E0 Etot (A1) = A1 E0 Etot (A2) = A2 E0 In spallation processes the energy per nucleon is roughly conserved
Path length of cosmic rays The existence (and the relative importance) of the secondary nucleons is an indication that the cosmic rays have crossed a certain amount of column density of order of 1 interaction length H 52 g cm-2 He g cm-2 X g cm-2
Propagation of Cosmic Rays in the Galaxy For a theoretically well motivated study of the propagation one should consider the DIFFUSION of Cosmic Rays in the Galactic Magnetic Field.
Propagation in a Random Field Described as Diffusion 1-Dimension 3-Dimension
Diffusion Coefficient D
Partial Differential Equation describing Diffusion
N(E,x,t) = Density of Cosmic Rays of energy E at position x and time t [Neglecting Energy Losses] Source Diffusion Interactions Volume containing Magnetic Field Particles exiting the Volume are lost
LEAKY BOX MODEL Homogeneous Model Drop the x dependence Neglect interactions Source Escape
Hypothesis of stationarity: Hypothesis is good if escape << TGalaxy
Hypothesis of STATIONARITY Note: The observed spectrum has a different form from the injected spectrum
Escape or Interaction?
Propagation of a Secondary Nucleus that is a particle so rare (like Li, Be, B) that the direct acceleration is negligible, that is the source term is zero. For simplicity we can assume a generic secondary nucleus S that is produced only by a single primary nucleus P by spallation
intp(e) Direct Source If the source QS term is zero Escape Spallation of primary Source
Ratio Primary/Secondary measures the product ism Xesc = lesc ism (g/cm2) ism c Mean Free Path of CR in the Galaxy

Source Spectrum of Galactic Cosmic Rays The spectrum of Cosmic Ray at the accelerator has the form With = 2-2.2 E
Determination of the Escape Time Use of COSMIC CLOCKS Isotope Be-10 Half-time : 1.6 * 106 years Comparison with Be-9 (stable isotope) -1 esc/ intp da e.g. B/C; si deduce esc/ dec e quindi esc; infine si deduce <nh>
Beryllium-10 Measurements
Results on escape time The escape time are consistent with being ~1.5x10 7 y and <nh> ~ 0.2-0.3 n/cm3 Galactic density of ISM medium: <nh> ~ 1.0 n/cm3. I raggi cosmici si muovono in un volume più vasto del piano galattico
