1 The Palmetto State Bulletin Inside This Issue e Newsletter of the South Carolina State Council Volume 28 Issue 10 April 2017 CELEBRATING OUR FOUNDER The Knights of Columbus Supreme Council marked the 135th anniversary of the founding of the Order at a Mass on March 29 in St. Mary s Church in New Haven, Conn. The church is the site where Father Michael J. McGivney first gathered a group of Catholic men from the parish with the goal of providing for families of deceased breadwinners. March 29 marks the day when the organization received approval of its charter from the state of Connecticut in There is something timeless about people who are holy, because their lives speak to each new generation. Such is the case with Father McGivney, Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore said in his homily. The supreme chaplain continued that like Pope Francis example of charity today, Father McGivney was a man of mercy and charity. Concelebrating with the archbishop were Msgr. J. Peter Cullen, Connecticut state chaplain; Dominican Father Jonathan D. Kalisch, director of Chaplains and Spiritual Development and prior of St. Mary s Dominican Community; Dominican Father John Paul Walker, pastor of St. Mary s Parish; Father Joseph A. Marcello, pastor of St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Trumbull and priest-secretary emeritus to the supreme chaplain; and Dominican Father Marek Domeradzki of Poland. Father Louis Bianco was the master of ceremonies. Attending the Mass were relatives of Venerable Michael J. McGivney and Knights from Connecticut. John Walshe, greatgrandnephew of Father McGivney, and Kay Walshe, were the gift bearers for the Mass. Brian V. Caulfield, vice-postulator for the cause for the canonization of Father McGivney, served as the lector. After Mass, Archbishop Lori led supreme officers and their wives to the sarcophagus of Father McGivney located in the rear of the church, where they recited the Prayer for Canonization along with the congregation. The prayer was written in 2008, when the Vatican recognized the heroic virtue of Father McGivney and declared him a venerable Servant of God. A miracle attributed to his intercession is needed for him to advance to beatification. Allen Dear Brothers, The mere fact that you stopped to read this newsletter means you are already committed to the principles of our founder Fr. Michael J. McGivney. However, even the committed need a little motivation and training once in a while. If you were at the fourth annual South Carolina Catholic Men s Conference at Prince of Peace Church, you would have been motivated by Fr. Jeff Kirby who talked at length about our responsibility as Priest of our own Domestic Church. We also heard Steve Ray s conversion story from protestant minister to Catholic apologist. Then we were able to spend some quality time with the Lord at Adoration led by the Pastor of Prince of Peace, Fr. Smith. This was another great Catholic men s event and a chance to recharge our spiritual batteries as we head into this year s Easter Season. If you missed it I hope you consider joining us next March in the Columbia area for another great meeting with Catholic men exploring our faith. Next month is the annual State Convention being held in North Charleston. I hope to see every one of you there as we recap all the great work that was done by the Knights this past fraternal year. We will have a lot of fun, give out many awards and witness firsthand the Charity that means so much to so many children in our state as a result of your Tootsie Roll campaigns. Please register soon so that we can make our final arrangements for you, because each and every one of you is special to the Knights of Columbus organization. Also make sure you have your forms filled out and submitted so we can recognize you for your efforts. See you all next month, Vivat Jesus, Now is the time to start submitting your RSVP forms for if you have already sent a check to your seminarians. Turn-around time for is short for this time of the year but as you near the June 30th deadline it will become longer as Councils rush to meet the deadline. Remember for every $500 donated to a seminarian, you will get back a rebate of $100. Up to a maximum of $2,000 per year. As you begin your planning meetings for next year consider new ways to support the seminarians. Consider what two Councils in the upstate have done to support seminarians. Council 6076 Fr. Maurice R. Daly, at St. Paul s in Spartanburg held St. Patrick s Day dinner and dance and had a silent auction to support a seminarian that would be ordained next year. They wanted to help purchase vestments and a chalice. The silent auction was so successful that they raised $11,000 for one seminarian. Council 9575 Mary Queen of Peace at Jesus, Our Risen Savior in Spartanburg is served by 3 Adorno Fathers or Clerics Regular Minor C.R.M. This year, Deacon Andrew Fryml from JORS will be ordained at the beginning of June. The US Adorno Fathers delegation has 11 priests (9 in the Diocese of Charleston) serving in parishes in the US supporting 2 retired priests, 6 priests working in their seminaries, and 34 seminarians. Unlike our diocesan seminarians, the Adornos do not receive money from any dioceses to help with the educational costs of their seminarians. The costs come from the priest s salaries and contributions from the community. Council 9575, this year will contribute $17,500 to support both Andrew Fryml and the Adorno seminarians. Two fund raisers for them were very successful. The first was the Keep Christ in Christmas program. They sold Knight Christmas Cards and keep Christ in Christmas magnets. It was announced that all proceeds would benefit the seminarians. They placed an order for the starter kit and took orders for 3 weekends after Mass in October. When the cards came in they were distributed after Mass. At the beginning of Advent, they sold the car magnets. At the end, there was no inventory left. The profit from the event was $1,500. The second event was a Lenten Fish Fry. This event was also promoted with funds going to the seminarians and another $1,500 was raised for the seminarian fund. The seminarians appreciate all that our councils do for them by sending cards and keeping them in your prayers. The closest seminarian is 500 mile away with others in Texas or around the globe. We do not want the seminarians to feel detached from the Diocese of Charleston. Please continue to pray for an increase in vocations for the Diocese of Charleston as we approach our bicentennial as a diocese in a few years.

Time now to recruit. It is the last chance to exemplify candidates for the Assembly to be eligible for the Catholic Legacy Award and Star Assembly Award. Your Assembly deserves to be recognized for their achievements. More importantly, it is an honor to be a Sir Knight. This honor should be shared with our brother Knights. Povero, PSD, FM Worthy Grand Knights and Members of the State Council: Every Formation Degree team needs to be active on a regular basis and conduct a Formation Degree at least every other month in the district(s) they are assigned to. All teams need to be exemplifying the new Formation Degree at all exemplifications. Teams do not have to be certified on the new degree to conduct it. On the State level this means we have 11 teams and only 6 teams have completed the new degree. If the other 5 teams are not active by May 7, 2017 the State Council will be charged $250 for each team that has not held the new Formation Degree by the Supreme Council. The forms must be filled out properly with the correct team name and the word NEW on the same line as the team name. The following teams need to perform the new Formation Degree prior to May 7, 2017; Capital City Team (District 2, 7 & 12),Aiken Team (District 4), Greater Greenville Area Team (District 6, 8 & 14), Greater Charleston Area Team (District 9) and Fr. Frederick H. Suggs Team (District 16). We have had 7 Councils that have met or exceeded their goal for Admission Degrees held for this fraternal year. On the other side of the coin we have 15 Councils that have not held anadmission Degree or reported that they have held a degree as of this newsletter. The District Deputies for these councils need to find out why they have not held a degree and help them to accomplish this before the end of the Fraternal Year. 5 The Palmetto State Bulletin 5 April 2017 Fulfillment of our Lenten Journey By Deacon Bob Cox My Brother Knights, as Lent comes to an end, ask yourself, did I fulfill my duties of fasting, penance and prayer during my Lenten Journey? Be assured that the Lord was there with you the whole 40 days, and if you wandered a little bit, He nudged you back to your Lenten goal(s). He wants you to be prepared for Holy Week. Next to the Easter Vigil, Holy Thursday is the most profound and complex of all religious observances. It begins the Triduum (that is: Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday) and Holy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus with His disciples, as He established the Priesthood as we know it. During the Passover meal, Jesus established the Sacrament of Holy Communion by breaking bread and passing the cup of wine, saying This is my body, which is given for you. And, also saying, This is my blood which is given for you. Jesus tells his Disciples to Do this in memory of Me. It is our faith that we believe that those who eat of Christ s flesh and drink of His blood shall have eternal life. Of course, we also believe that the bread and wine are transformed into the body and blood of Jesus through a process known as transubstantiation; and that the Last Supper is celebrated daily in the Catholic Church as part of every Mass, for it is through Jesus sacrifice that we have been saved. Pope Francis says this about the Triduum, Jesus loved his own in the world and He loved them to the end. Jesus loved us. Jesus loves us. But without limits, always to the end. The love of Jesus for us has no limits, it is always more. He loves all of us to the point of giving His life. My Brothers, Jesus gave us a new commandment at the Last Supper, That you love one another, as I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is such an important part of our Lenten Journey. LOVE. Jesus so LOVED us, that He died on a cross for each of us, so that we might be saved and live with Him in heaven. Jesus served us while He was here with us. I am quite certain that we Knights of Columbus have served the outcast, the hungry, the poor, just as Christ did and still does. I am quite certain that we all fulfilled our Lenten Journey appropriately. In fulfillment of our Lenten Journey of fasting, prayer, and penance, may our hearts be transformed so we may gaze upon our brothers and sisters and love one another as Jesus loves us! Amen. Convention Booklet Ads The council and district ads for this year s convention program are few and far between. It is critical to the success of this convention that councils and districts get their ads in ASAP. The form States March 19 but it should have said April 19 th. So you have time, but don t delay April 19 th is the absolute deadline.

6 The Palmetto State Bulletin 6 April 2017 Ceremonials/Protocol continued from page 4 The State Officers and Ceremonial Chairman as well as the Membership Chairman stand at the ready to assist you with this task. We owe this to the fellow Catholic men that are out there and have never been asked to join or do not know what advantages there are in the Knights of Columbus membership. The attached reports show the status of each council for Admission Degrees and the District Formation Degrees for These reports do not show membership intake for councils or district they only show either Admission or Formation Degrees held. PROTOCOL With election of new officers and installations coming up we need to address the invitation of personnel to the installation of your Council. Your District Deputy must be notified as much in advanced of the installation date you want for your Council. Next you need to send invitations to any State Officers that you want to attend your installation. A letter and personnel invite must be made to your Council Chaplain or any clergy you wish to have there. Make sure when they arrive that you or someone from your Council stays with them and makes them feel at home. When a meal is involved be sure they are seated in a place of honor and go or are served first ahead of members of the council. If they are expected to say something at the installation be sure to notify them of the fact and the amount of time they have to speak. If they ask what you want them to speak on make a suggestion, otherwise leave this to their discretion. Soccer Shoot Off The Soccer Shoot Off was held on March 11th. Below are the winners. 7 The Palmetto State Bulletin 7 April 2017 BUILDING THE DOMESTIC CHURCH Fellow Brothers of the Domestic Church, This month, let s continue to explore your relationship with God, with your family, and with your parishioners. Hopefully by now, you are seeing a heightened closeness to God. As Lent is now coming to a close, don t waste the opportunity to seek sacramental reconciliation. Clean things up as we all need to do on a regular basis. I recommend monthly Confession. May s suggested guidance will soon be posted on the State Website. Again, please note that I have archived all previous monthly program suggestions. You can always go back and start fresh from the beginning as you enter into the K of C s Initiative of Building the Domestic Church. Just click on the links located at the bottom of each section. In addition to suggested guidance for your consideration in May, this month s postings in the State Website address two areas of concern which you have expressed to me. First, I was reminded that the booklet, Family Fully Alive, is heavily oriented towards Knights that have children still at home. Much of the discussion simply does not pertain to many Knights who are much older. Their children have left home and are married with children of their own. The material presented does not apply to the empty nester situation of the older Knight. I have addressed this in the Family Prayer Corner. Secondly, a concern was voiced at the Grand Knight s Workshop in February about many parishioners who don t see an active program in their parishes which promote a welcoming atmosphere. Newcomers register, go to Mass, leave for home and never get to know the other parishioners. This problem can potentially be solved by any Knight wanting to Build the Domestic Church. Check the website s Monthly Planning Items. I ll have more to suggest next month. Keep chargin!! The devil wants God to become out of sight, out of mind, as the saying goes. If there is nothing to remind us of true fatherhood, then we cannot know who God the Father is. -Fr. Stan Smolenski- Brothers, This quote is from an article written by Fr. Stan in the world renown Homiletic and Pastoral Review Magazine. If you're not familiar with Fr. Stan, he is the rector of the shrine of Our Lady of South Carolina in Kingstree. Fr. Stan is perhaps one of the worlds leading experts on St. Joseph as he is asked to speak around the globe on his favorite subject and he speaks frequently at Vatican on the Father of Jesus and the husband of Mary. We are very fortunate to have Fr, Stan here in South Carolina and he will be the honoree at the upcoming convention in May. Fr. Stan is an amazing man and wonderful speaker, I hope that you don't miss the opportunity to meet him next month in North Charleston. I hope to see each and every one of you there as we recap the year and pay tribute to one of our fine Priests. We will extend registration for a short time so you can get your delegates in place.
