A un pixel del file grafico da stampare corrisponde una goccia sempre uguale. Scala di grigio (GS): la testina viene pilotata in modo da generare in stampa gocce di dimensione differente e pari velocità. Il numero di dimensioni di gocce contemporanee che si riesce a fare identifica il numero di livelli di grigio. A un pixel del file grafico da stampare corrisponde uno dei livelli di grigio possibili. A quantità (Q): la testina viene pilotata in modo da farla lavorare in binario a frequenza variabile in funzione del peso di liquido da depositare, compatibilmente con la velocità del materiale in ingresso. A un pixel del file grafico da stampare corrisponde un treno di gocce sempre uguale ma il numero di gocce emesse dipende dalla quantità richiesta dall operatore in macchina.
