IIl Carnevale Romano The Roman Carnival L origine del Carnevale romano si può far risalire ai riti dell antica Roma in onore di Saturno, quando ogni sorta di trasgressione era concessa al popolo. La chiesa cattolica, nei secoli, ha sempre permesso la celebrazione del Carnevale tanto che nel 400 fu introdotta come festività da papa Paolo II Barbo. Soprattutto nel setteottocento, il carnevale romano divenne famoso a livello internazionale per la sua bellezza e per la grande partecipazione popolare. I più grandi artisti dell epoca, come, Mne De Stael, Goethe e Dickens. hanno avuto modo di vedere e immortalare questa festa, tramite poesie, acquarelli, racconti. Travestimenti, stravaganti pettinature e riti bizzarri, caratterizzavano il rituale carnevalesco di Roma. Tra i momenti più suggestivi: la gara dei moccoletti per cui i romani si aggiravano per le strade della città con una candela in mano, e la corsa dei Berberi, cioè dei cavalli berberi. Etimologicamente la parola carnevale deriva dal latino "carnem levare", popolarmente tradotto "carne-vale" perché anticamente indicava il banchetto di abolizione della carne che si teneva subito prima del periodo di astinenza e digiuno della quaresima. Oggi il Carnevale è, per lo più, una festa riservata ai bambini con molte attività a loro dedicate. Poi, negli ultimi giorni grassi, giovedì 11 e martedì 16 febbraio, la città sarà animata da spettacoli, sfilate e feste in maschera per tutti. IIl Mezzogiorno a Roma Noon in Rome Nei secoli scorsi la gente comune, per sapere che ore fossero, faceva affidamento sui rintocchi che battevano dall'alto delle chiese. Ma quest'ultime anziché suonare le campane all'ora esatta, spesso sbagliavano, essendo il calcolo del tempo ancora impreciso. Mancava dunque un riferimento cronologico ufficiale per tutta la città. E anche vero che in quei tempi "il mezzogiorno" era considerato un riferimento puramente astronomico: le ore del giorno venivano scandite a partire dall'ultima funzione religiosa. Solo verso la metà del XIX secolo, anche a Roma il mezzogiorno cominciò ad essere considerato il riferimento dal quale contare ufficialmente le ore. Papa Pio IX introdusse, infatti, l'uso di annunciare pubblicamente il mezzogiorno in tutta la città con un sistema curioso: dal 1 dicembre 1846, ogni giorno alle ore 12 un cannone faceva fuoco dalla cima di Castel S.Angelo. Nel 1903 la cerimonia venne prima trasferita a Monte Mario, e un anno più tardi sulla cima del Monte Gianicolo. Il cannone si fermò durante la seconda guerra mondiale, ma nel 1959, il 21 Aprile la cerimonia riprese e, da allora, non è stata più sospesa. Secondo il rituale, su una piccola terrazza, sopra la città, tre soldati caricano un obice con un colpo a salve, e dopo un breve conto alla rovescia fanno fuoco, alle ore 12 in punto. Il Cannone del Gianicolo. www.wikipedia.org Acouple of centuries ago ordinary people in order to find out what time it confided in the tolling of the bells from the many churches of Rome. But the churches did not ring the bells on the exact hour they would often ring at different times, as the calculation of the time was based on imprecise methods. Thus the city needed an official chronological reference for the entire city. In fact, back in those times noon was considered as a purely astronomical reference: the hours of the day were beat from the time when the religious services finished. It was not until the 20th century that Rome started to look at noon as reference from which the hours were officially counted and thus the religious criteria were slowly replaced. Pope Pius IX introduced a curious system for the entire city after which noon was publicly announced: from December 1st 1846 every day at noon a cannon was fired from the summit of the Castle S. Angelo. In 1903 the ceremony of the cannon shots of midday was transferred first to Monte Mario, and the following year to the summit of Monte Gianicolo, the highest spot in Rome. The cannon stopped during WW II but in 1959, on April 21st the ceremony was resumed and from that point on it has not been suspended. According to tradition, three soldiers who stand on a small terrace load a howitzer and fire it at exactly 12 o clock noon. The roar is so strong that it can be heard all over downtown Rome. 10
