Cerchi d Acqua : a way out of violence This little pocket brouchure is a way to help women who live in violence condition. The Municipal discrict of Sesto San Giovanni, Equal Opportunities Councillorship and Committee, made an agreement with Cerchi d Acqua Social Onlus Cooperative, in order to contrast violence against women and their family. Cerchi d Acqua s assumption is that every woman has her own strength and resources to get out of violence. Cerchi d Acqua only operates with women s permission; privacy, anonimity,and lack of judgment are ensured. 9
Many women are violence victims Violence is the first cause of death or permanent disability for women from 16 to 44 years (OMS) and this kind of violence is mostly committed at home. Violence involves men and women as well, from differente ages, social positions, education and profession. Violence is serius and traumatic, it s an intolerable experience that annihilates personal integrity perception and causes physical, psychological and social consecuences which last in time. Violence damages physical and psychological identity and causes anxiety, fear, insecurity. Violence is often suffered in silence and loneliness with submission and impotence. 10
Many kinds of violence Physical and sexual violence There are men who beat (slaps, fists,kicks, armed assoult) there are men who force women to have sex against their will. Psychological violence There are men who force women to live in state of subjection, using persecutory and intimidatory behavior. (Threats of abandonment, abuses, isolation, obsessive observation, threat of children separation, destruction, isolation, verbal assoult and humiliation). 11
Economic violence There are men who refuse to contribute towards family expenses and manage women economic resourses. Several kinds of violence are often present in cases of abuse. The first step is to become aware of violence First of all every woman must become aware of her situation and decide to change. She s the only one who can do this necessary step. Only after an appropriate approach, and expert support, she ll be to obtain dignity and self confidence. 12
