3 The Passion for Life charity dinner will be held in the Palazzo Budini Gattai in Florence, in the beautiful Santissima Annunziata Square, 16th June, just a couple of days after the opening of the Volterra exhibition. Together with congress "Humor in psychotherapy", the Passion for Life program will partake in the fundraising for the Meyer Foundation, the Children s Hospital in Florence, as it did last year, in Special guest star of the evening, will be Patch Adams, the doctor who brought the smile into the hospital ward (Robin Williams played the role of Patch Adams in a successful Hollywood movie in 1998). Passion for life art sostiene il programma Passion for Life con una serata di gala per la raccolta fondi, il 16 giugno a Palazzo Budini Gattai a Firenze, nella splendida Piazza Santissima Annunziata. La cena è organizzata in collaborazione con il congresso "Umorismo in terapia". I fondi raccolti come è tradizione di Passion for Life, vanno ad un'istituzione del paese ospitante. In questo caso, come già avvenuto in occasione della mostra a Firenze del 2006, a sostegno della Fondazione Meyer, l'ospedale Pediatrico di Firenze. Ospite d'onore della serata di raccolta fondi è Patch Adams, il medico che ha portato il sorriso negli ospedali (Robin Williams ha interpretato il ruolo di Patch Adams nel celebre film del 1998).

4 Passion for life can be interpreted as an emotion. A complex and varied emotion, difficult to put into words. Probably the first image that passion for life evokes, is a positive one, but we know that often passion can also mean suffering. So maybe it is more correct to think it as an intense emotion without necessarily being either positive or negative, but simply intense. In the first moment when we look at a work of art that says something to us we feel this emotion. Our mind is not yet able to translate this into words, yet that emotion which we have felt will influence our words and all that subsequently follows. In neuroscience one talks of affective priming to describe for example a hidden stimulus, such as a fleeting image which appears on our computer screen without us having consciously seen it (the image appearing for less than a sixteenth of a second), and therefore a subliminal image; but it is still enough to impress on our retina and to reach our nerve endings. Our brain realises that something is happening, for example when we are captured by a work of art we immerse ourselves in the colours, sensations, materials and we have this intense emotion, without the need of the filtering by a critic or by reason that our mind will subsequently elaborate. This moment is well described by Malcolm Gladwell in Blink, when he tries to explain to the reader how our way of thinking can alter within a twinkling of an eye, thanks to this intuitive thinking (that faculty and experience together allow us to process complex knowledge in an instant). I am thinking of the example cited by Gladwell of an antique Greek statue bought by the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles that was subjected to extensive tests by a pool of experts and then Federico Zeri only had to briefly look at it to realise that it was a fake. After the general uncertainty of this assertion further tests proved Zeri and his instant perception to be correct. Experience, regular aesthetical and critical judgement, beauty conditioning, call it as you will, but when we see a work of art (positively influenced by passion), we cause an emotional chain of sensations. The wonderful thing is that our brain then elaborates the visual information and completes a pictorial operation taking in the suggestion of the artist and creating further images, sensations, works. A bit as Daniel C. Dennett in Sweet Dreams where he recounts looking at the Dresden painting by Bellotto for the first time and taking it for a Canaletto.

5 He describes getting impatiently closer to the painting where he was expecting to see the exquisite detail of Canaletto but on nearing the work the details that he had expected and almost believed to have seen evaporated in front of his eyes, they were just marks of colour artistically arranged. The marks suggested people but it was his brain which took on board this suggestion as being a fact. Bellotto had supplied the dabs of paint trusting that the eyes and the brains of those who looked at it would complete and amplify the work. We as the spectator continue the artist s job gathering their suggestions and the stimuli that their work gives us in order to proceed to work out, in a most personal way, their signals. And the result is often something else, disconcerting. A bit like what happens in the world of communication, a signal is made on the basis of our responses and on our reactions: Jean Noël Kapferer suggests that a message is simply interpreted, as to whether the interpretation corresponds with the intentions of who communicated it or not, is another issue. When I look at the work of the artists in Passion for Life Art (PFLart) it is like beginning a personal dialogue, reinforced by the fact that I have the fortune to know these artists personally, exalted by that sensation that I imagine pervades the collector when he manages his works of art and displays them. What makes the Passion for Life Art artists special? The philosophy behind PFLart, that has determined the success of the exhibitions organized in various countries worldwide, lies in the fact, in my opinion, that at the basis of this meeting of many different artists there is a good cause; all the rest is art, freedom. The artists that participate in PFLart exhibit their works in a prestigious context, whether it be in Italy or Mexico or wherever and simultaneously but in a way separate from the exhibition, also contribute to the two objectives of the Passion for Life program (PFL): cancer awareness and the fundraising aspect for the fight against cancer. There is not therefore the necessity to push an art critic to define their particular tendency, to group these richly diverse artists together for the sake of creating an artistic current in their production or to invent a name to describe such a movement. It is, moreover, a very difficult job to create characteristics of an art movement and have the talent to find a good name for it, such as for example, the synthesis of Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam which became COBRA.

6 I have in mind a photo from 1948 of the artists Appel, Corneille and Constant almost on each others shoulders and leaning against a painted wooded sculpture by Appel and I think that these artists are the critic s dream: the icon itself, the artist, who bothers to organise the group, trace its own language and transcribes its own ideas. When asked to comment on a SKY transmission about the Florence Biennale, Achille Bonito Oliva refused saying that there aren t eight hundred artists in the whole world. I still get frustrated today when I think about these words. Certainly not all 800 artists are Michelangelo or Leonardo da Vinci but there are so many talented artists that have every right to provide us with sensations and emotions through their work. John T. Spike taught me that today to find the best contemporary art work it is not enough to go to the right Parisian café as one would have done in the early XX century. Today in the contemporary art scene, interesting talents briefly bond at an important exhibition but they then disperse, freely, throughout the world. On the occasion of the fifth edition of the International Contemporary Art Biennial, Florence, I had the fortune to be able to discuss with Christo and Jeanne-Claude the difficulty of organizing contemporary art events. Provocatively Christo, with chosen criteria, said to me that it would be interesting to hold a Biennial, without critics, galleries and all that they sum up, but instead have an enormous exhibition where we say to the artists that they can enrol from such to such a date and they have to bring their works on a particular day, and those that don t make it in time can t participate. I took on board this challenge: I think it is a good idea to leave the choice to the public, the visitors. I then asked him but if an artists or a visitor were to be offended by a work? I was thinking of the problems, sometimes enlarged by the media who seem to enjoy underlining the contrasts between diverse beliefs and customs, instead of underlining the elements of dialogue and communications that make up art. And with the same provocateur tone, here is the net and illuminated response: if an artist or a visitor feels offended by my works well then it s his problem. Vito Abba

7 La passione per la vita può essere intesa come un emozione. Un emozione complessa e variegata, difficile da tradurre in parole. Probabilmente la prima immagine che evoca Passione per la vita è positiva, ma sappiamo che spesso passione vuol dire anche sofferenza. Quindi forse è più giusto pensare ad un emozione intensa, non necessariamente positiva o negativa, ma semplicemente intensa. Nel primo istante in cui osserviamo un opera d arte che ci comunica qualcosa, proviamo questa sensazione intensa. La nostra mente non riesce ancora a tradurre in parole quello che proviamo, ma noi già sentiamo quell emozione che influenzerà le nostre parole e tutto quello che verrà dopo. Nelle neuroscienze si parla di innesco emotivo (affective priming) per spiegare ad esempio uno stimolo mascherato, come può essere una fugace immagine che appare sullo schermo del nostro computer sotto la soglia della percezione cosciente (meno di un sedicesimo di secondo), quindi subliminale, ma abbastanza da impressionare la nostra retina e percorrere le nostre terminazioni nervose. Il nostro cervello si accorge che sta succedendo qualcosa, così come quando siamo catturati da un opera d arte, ci immergiamo nei colori, nelle sensazioni, nei materiali e proviamo un intensa emozione, senza bisogno del filtro di un critico o dei ragionamenti che poi la nostra mente elaborerà. Ha descritto bene questo momento Malcolm Gladwell in Blink, cercando di spiegarci come il nostro modo di pensare possa cambiare in un batter di ciglia, grazie al pensiero intuitivo (quell insieme di facoltà ed esperienze che ci permettono di elaborare una conoscenza complessa nello spazio di un istante). Penso ad esempio al caso citato da Gladwell dell antica statua greca acquisita dal J. Paul Getty Museum di Los Angeles e sottoposta a lunghi esami da un pool di esperti, che dopo una rapida occhiata Federico Zeri ha percepito come falsa. Dopo lo sconcerto generale, ulteriori esami hanno dato ragione a quella sua istantanea percezione. Esperienza, abitudine al giudizio estetico e critico, allenamento al bello, chiamiamolo come vogliamo, ma quando osserviamo un opera d arte (positivamente influenzati dalla passione) inneschiamo un emozionante catena di sensazioni. La cosa bella è che il nostro cervello poi elabora le informazioni visive e compie un operazione pittorica cogliendo il suggerimento dell artista e creando ulteriori immagini, sensazioni, opere. Un po come racconta Daniel C. Dennett in Sweet dreams La prima volta che [...] intravidi la Veduta di Dresda di Bellotto la scambiai per un Canaletto e avvicinandomi con impazienza mi aspettavo di gustare gli squisiti dettagli che il Canaletto metteva nelle sue navi e gondole veneziane: il sartiame, le fibbie delle scarpe, le piume nei cappelli.

8 L assortita folla che si muoveva per il ponte di Dresda alla luce del giorno prometteva una festa di costumi e carrozze, ma appena mi avvicinai, i dettagli che avrei giurato di aver visto da lontano evaporarono davanti ai miei occhi. Non vi era altro che semplici macchie di colore artisticamente disposte. Quelle macchie suggerivano persone con braccia, gambe e vestiti e il mio cervello aveva colto tale suggerimento. Bellotto aveva fornito alcune macchie di pittura confidando negli occhi e nei cervelli di chi guarda l opera per completare o ampliare il lavoro. Noi spettatori continuiamo il lavoro degli artisti, cogliendo i loro suggerimenti e gli stimoli delle loro opere per procedere ad una elaborazione, del tutto personale, dei loro segnali. E il risultato è spesso qualcosa di altro, sconcertante. Un po come accade nel mondo della comunicazione, un segnale viene elaborato in base alle nostre risposte e ai nostri atteggiamenti: come insegna Jean Noël Kapferer, un messaggio viene semplicemente interpretato, che poi l interpretazione corrisponda alle intenzioni di chi ha comunicato quel messaggio è tutta un altra faccenda. Quando vedo le opere degli artisti di Passion for Life Art (PFLart) è come se si instaurasse un dialogo personale, rinforzato dal fatto che ho la fortuna di conoscere gli artisti personalmente, ed esaltato da quella sensazione che immagino pervada il collezionista quando maneggia le opere e le dispone. Che cosa rende speciali gli artisti di Passion for Life Art? La filosofia di PFLart, che ha decretato il successo delle mostre che vengono organizzate in vari paesi del mondo, risiede a mio avviso nel fatto che alla base dell incontro di tanti artisti diversi c è semplicemente una buona causa, tutto il resto è arte, libera. Gli artisti che partecipano a PFLart portano le loro opere in un contesto prestigioso, sia esso in Italia, in Messico o altrove, e contemporaneamente, ma in maniera distinta dalla mostra, contribuiscono ai due obiettivi del programma Passion For Life (PFL): sensibilizzazione sul cancro e raccolta di fondi per la lotta al cancro. Non si avverte quindi la necessità di spingere un critico ad individuare una particolare tendenza per raccogliere l arte di artisti così riccamente diversi, tanto da poter ricondurre ad una corrente artistica le loro produzioni e inventare un nome per descrivere un movimento. E tra l altro un compito molto difficile fornire i connotati ad un movimento o avere la capacità di indovinare un nome fortunato, come può essere per me la sintesi di Copenhagen, Brussels e Amsterdam che diviene COBRA.

9 Ho in mente una foto del 1948 che ritrae Appel, Corneille e Costant, quasi uno sulle spalle dell altro, appoggiati ad una scultura in legno dipinto di Appel, e penso che questi artisti sono il sogno dei critici: l icona stessa dell artista che si preoccupa di organizzare un gruppo, tracciare un linguaggio, trascrivere le idee. Però al tempo stesso mi viene in mente quello che ha risposto Achille Bonito Oliva invitato a commentare una trasmissione che SKY stava realizzando sugli oltre 800 artisti della Biennale di Firenze: non ci sono ottocento artisti in tutto il mondo. Mi arrabbio ancora oggi quando ripenso a quelle parole. Certo non possono esserci ottocento Michelangelo o Leonardo da Vinci, ma ci sono tanti artisti di talento che hanno pieno diritto di fornirci con le proprie opere sensazioni ed emozioni. Come mi ha insegnato John T. Spike, oggi per trovare il meglio dell arte contemporanea non basta come nella prima metà del Novecento frequentare il caffé parigino giusto. Oggi l arte contemporanea coagula brevemente attorno ad una grande esposizione alcuni talenti interessanti e poi si muove, libera, nel mondo. Ho avuto la fortuna di poter discutere con Christo e Jean-Claude delle difficoltà di organizzare eventi di arte contemporanea, in occasione della quinta edizione della Biennale Internazionale dell Arte Contemporanea di Firenze. Sui criteri di scelta, provocatoriamente, Christo mi ha detto che sarebbe interessante fare una Biennale senza critici, gallerie e tutto quello che ci sta intorno, ma solo una grande mostra dove si dice agli artisti potete iscrivervi dal tale giorno al tal altro, e dovete portare le opere che volete in quella particolare data, chi non fa in tempo è fuori. Ho accolto la provocazione, penso sia una bella idea lasciare la scelta al pubblico dei visitatori, e gli ho chiesto ma se un artista o un visitatore si sente offeso da un opera? Pensavo ai problemi talvolta ingigantiti dai media, che sembra si divertano a sottolineare i contrasti tra le diverse credenze e costumi, invece di sottolineare quale dirompente elemento di dialogo e comunicazione sia l arte. E qui è arrivata, nello stesso tono provocatore, la risposta netta e illuminante: se un artista o un visitatore si sente offeso dalle mie opere è un problema suo. Vito Abba

10 Francesco Bigazzi Francesco Bigazzi was born in 1972 in Livorno, Italy and now lives and works in Castiglioncello also on the Tuscan coast. His introduction to painting occurred at a young age and already in teens he was drawing and painting with talent. Still lives, the Livorno coast line and seascapes, hills and people that are dear to him are his subject matter. His is a daily journey that accompanies him throughout his life; in fact his work is in continual metamorphosis, like a kaleidoscope, creating new colours, forms and emotions. In 2000 he began a more introspective journey taking him closer to abstract painting and his recent works in the treatment and decisive color show his mature style. The series of paintings le relazioni or relationships marks a turning point, in that Bigazzi has put himself to the test more than ever, putting a remarkable amount of energy on to the canvas. Bigazzi has participated in many group exhibition.

12 Francesco Bigazzi nasce a Livorno nel 1972 e a vive e lavora a Castiglioncello. L incontro con la pittura avviene molto presto: già in età adolescenziale dipinge e disegna con discreti risultati. Nature morte, il mare della costa di Livorno, le colline e le persone a lui più care, divengono naturali soggetti del suo lavoro. Un percorso quotidiano, inesorabile, che lo accompagna nella sua vita; di fatto la sua opera è in una perenne metamorfosi che stravolge, come un caleidoscopio, ogni colore, forma e sentimento. Dal 2000 ha iniziato un cammino introspettivo che lo ha portato ad avvicinarsi alla pittura astratta. Maturo nel tratto, deciso nei colori, materici e graffiati: così appaiono i suoi lavori di recente produzione. La serie le relazioni ha segnato una svolta, Bigazzi si è messo in gioco più che mai, mettendo in tela una fase di notevole energia. Ha partecipato a numerose collettive.

14 Margherita Blonska Margherita Blonska was born in Wroklaw, Poland. She studied art in her teens frequenting the studio of the artist Weronika Mielicka. She began studying architecture and in 1982 moved to Italy where she took an architecture degree at Florence University and following that, a painting degree at the Accademia delle Belle Arti. She currently follows a masters in bio-architecture at Bologna University. She has participated in various exhibition in Italy and abroad. Her works are often based around the news taken from means of mass communication which are then elaborated in the composition of the work itself. She looks to create a state of tension through overlapping contrasts and through the use of symbols. Her works are a merging of Pop art and Expressionism.

16 Margherita Blonska nata a Breslavia (Polonia), è architetto di professione e maestro d arte. Studia arte fin dalla prima adolescenza frequentando lo studio dell artista Weronika Mielicka. Inizia gli studi in architettura e nel 1982 si trasferisce in Italia dove si laurea in Architettura presso l Università di Firenze e successivamente in pittura all Accademia di Belle Arti. Frequenta il Master in Bioarchitettura presso la Facoltà di Ingegneria all Università di Bologna. Ha partecipato a varie rassegne d arte in Italia e all estero. Le sue opere spesso prendono spunto dalle notizie provenienti dai mezzi di comunicazione di massa, che vengono poi elaborate nella composizione dell opera. Cerca di creare uno stato di tensione attraverso contrasti sovrapposti e l utilizzo dei simboli. Le opere sono un connubio tra arte pop ed espressionismo.

18 Mary Brilli Born in Italy but with her heart in Paris, Mary Brilli reveals herself to be an eclectic artist. She experiments with varying forms and art techniques from painting to sculpture, from drawing to working on silk, collage, painting and installations. Brilli also expresses herself through prose, poetry and journalism. In two art books she presents her works: Portrait hors cadre and Clin d œil, and she is cited by Bénézit, in the Catalogue of Modern Art, Mondadori, by the Art Diary International and by various other authors. She lives and works in Paris and loves to repeat the phrase who knows how to look, who knows how to understand, have both made a great step forward in the direction of love, in the direction of tolerance, and everything seems more simple. In summer 2006 she exhibited her works at Passion for Life Art in Florence.

20 Italiana di nascita e Parigina di cuore, fin dall infanzia Mary Brilli si rivela un artista eclettica. Sperimenta varie forme e tecniche d arte che vanno dalla pittura alla scultura, dal disegno al lavoro su seta, "collages" dipinti, installazioni. Si esprime anche attraverso la scrittura: poemi e giornalismo. Due libri d arte: Portrait hors cadre e Clin d œil presentano le sue creazioni e viene citata dal Bénézit, dal catalogo d Arte Moderna Mondadori, da Art Diary International e da altre edizioni. Vive e lavora a Parigi, ama ripetere che chi sa guardare, chi sa capire, ha fatto un gran passo in direzione dell amore, in direzione della tolleranza e tutto sembra più semplice. Nell estate 2006 ha partecipato a Passion for Life Art a Firenze.

22 Diana Calvillo Diana Calvillo, Mexican artist and sculptor expresses an automatic synthesis of contemporary Mexican culture in her works. In her techniques she blends materials and uses elements such as acrylic painting, glass and metal which offer an added artistic value when set in modern Mexican architecture. Many of her works are located in museums, art galleries and private collections in America and Europe. In 1980, Calvillo received her diploma in design and architectural criticism. She currently holds conferences nationally and internationally and is a member of the International Scientific Committee of the Biennale of Contemporary Art in Florence. In two occasions of the Premio Firenze, in 1997 and 1999, she was awarded for her painting Caos Ecologico and for her sculptures Virtuoso and Fibro Blastos. In 2001 she won the gold medal Lorenzo il Magnifico at the Biennale of Contemporary Art in Florence for her sculpture Klon. In her most recent works, Calvillo being ecologically friendly, only uses natural elements. She has exhibited in Mexico, Italy, Poland and Great Britain having taken part in forty-three solo art exhibition and 195 collective art exhibition. In summer 2006, she exhibited her work at Passion for Life Art, Florence.

24 Diana Calvillo, pittrice e scultrice messicana esprime nelle sue opere una sintesi riflessiva della cultura messicana contemporanea. Nella sua tecnica fonde i materiali e usa elementi come la pittura acrilica, vetro e metallo, che offrono all architettura messicana moderna un valore artistico aggiunto. Molte sue opere sono presenti in musei, gallerie d arte e collezioni private, sia nel continente americano che in Europa. Nel 1980 si è diplomata come critico di architettura e disegno. Attualmente tiene conferenze nell ambito nazionale e internazionale. E membro del Comitato Scientifico Internazionale della Biennale dell Arte Contemporanea di Firenze. Nel 1997 durante la XII Edizione Premio Firenze per le Arti Visive, si è distinta con menzione d onore ed è stata premiata con medaglia di bronzo, per la pittura con Caos Ecologico e per la scultura con Virtuoso. Nel 1999 nuovamente premiata al merito, con medaglia di bronzo per la scultura Fibro Blastos, e nel 2001 con una medaglia d oro Lorenzo il Magnifico alla Biennale d Arte Contemporanea di Firenze, per l opera scultorea Klon. Nei suoi ultimi lavori, sensibile all ecologia, utilizza solo elementi di origine naturale. Ha esposto in Messico, Italia, Polonia, Gran Bretagna per un totale di 43 personali e 195 collettive. Nell estate 2006 ha partecipato a Passion for Life Art Florence.

26 Mimmo di Cesare Mimmo di Cesare was born in Palermo, Sicily, in Following in his father s footsteps, he devoted himself to being a goldsmith and his first exhibitions were in his home town and in Sciacca, also in Sicily. In 1962, he moved to Milan where he met Fontana, Scanavino, Fabbri, Dava and began his cycle of works sole or sun. He continued to create jewellery and sculpture which he exhibited in Milan, Rome and London. Some years later he became the assistant to Emilio Scanavino. In 1968, he exhibited superfici solari at the 14th International Triennial of Milan and at the Schmuck Museum of Pforheim. In this period, he created jewel-sculptures for Pierre Cardin, exhibiting them in Paris and Milan. In 1971 he exhibited again both in London and in Milan at the International Triennial and then from 1976 to 1978 di Cesare exhibited jewellery from two of his artistic groups of works: l arco and sole, in Florence and Milan in Italy and in Brazil. In 1979 he moved to Castiglioncello on the Tuscan coast, devoting himself above all to sculpture. He currently uses various materials: stone, wood and bronze for his art works. Here, di Cesare began the pietre solari cycle of works and has recently realized important sculptures for the Tuscan coastal towns of Castiglioncello, Rosignano Solvay and Livorno.

28 Mimmo di Cesare è nato a Palermo nell aprile del Sulle orme del padre si dedica all arte orafa, esordisce nel 1959 a Palermo e a Sciacca esponendo le sue prime esperienze orafe. Nel 1962 si trasferisce a Milano dove incontra Fontana, Scanavino, Fabbri, Dava e altri e dove inizia il ciclo di opere sole. Realizza vari gioielli e sculture che espone a Milano, Roma e Londra. Nei successivi anni diventa assistente di Emilio Scanavino. Nel 1968 presenta superfici solari alla 14ª Triennale Internazionale di Milano e allo Schmuck Museum di Pforheim. Realizza gioielli-sculture per Pierre Cardin esposti a Parigi e a Milano. Nel 1971 è a Londra e torna alla Triennale di Milano. Tra il 1976 e il 1978 espone gioielli del ciclo l arco e il sole a Firenze, in Brasile e a Milano. Nel 79 si trasferisce a Castiglioncello, in Toscana, dedicandosi prevalentemente alla scultura. Usa materiali come pietra, legno, bronzo, inizia il ciclo delle pietre solari e realizza importanti opere per le cittadine toscane di Castiglioncello, Rosignano Solvay e per Livorno.

30 Brenda Charles Brenda Charles was born in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico and studied art from the age of thirteen and then, under well-known architects, she studied at the Marco Museum of Contemporary Art, at the Museum of Mexican History and at the Nuevo León University. Her work developed using different techniques: watercolor, oils, mixed media, woodcut and lithography. She has recently become fascinated by other forms of expression: photography, digital art, new media and thematic installations: children and teenagers immersed in the electronic and communication worlds. Brenda Charles reveals the contradictory and very delicate relationship between information technology and teenagers, through a language that in its crude hyper-realism, leads one to a conceptual meditation. This can be seen, for example, through the surreal blending of children s smiling faces and the reticule of computer wires and microchips which trap them, suggesting a metaphoric snare, or in the exasperation depicted in some of the portraits. Her works have been exhibited in Europe, United States, South America and in various museums in Mexico. Brenda Charles has participated in Passion for Life Art exhibition in 2006 and in 2007 in Mexico.

34 Antoine Gaber Antoine Gaber was born into an artistic family in Cairo, Egypt in His sensibility towards the beauty of the Egyptian light inspired Antoine from the age of eight years to take up photography. In the 20 years that followed, living in Montréal and Toronto, Canada, Antoine dedicated all his time to studying and to pharmaceutical research against cancer, particularly breast cancer. Despite this work, his passion for art and photography continued and he has participated in many exhibitions world-wide. Antoine married the cancer research with artistic expression in 1999 and then in 2000 with a personal exhibition in Toronto he collected funds for HIV/AIDS research. In just a decade, Antoine Gaber has earned his place among the most valued of impressionist painters. Gaber appears as a revolutionary artist who successfully recreates the impressionism of the Masters, the inexhaustible source of inspiration behind his painterly work. Art critics have described Gaber as having revisited the impressionists with a fresh eye and, with his own sensibility, making the art of the impressionists the art of today. Twice awarded at the Florence Biennale, Italy, with the prestigious Prize "Lorenzo il Magnifico", Gaber received his first award in 2003, in recognition of his artistic career, and in 2005 in recognition of his International artistic and social fundraising initiative Passion for Life in support of cancer research. In 2004, Gaber launched this initiative Passion for Life (in Latin America, Europe and Canada) increasing cancer awareness and fund-raising for research. Gaber brought art to life with Passion for Life and brought hope to life to patients struggling with this illness. He has exhibited his works in Passion for Life Art exhibition in the summer of 2006 in Florence, Italy and in February 2007 in Chetumal, Mexico.

38 Sumio Inoue Sumio Inoue was born in 1948 in Tokyo, Japan. He studied photo techniques at Tokyo Design Academy from 1968 to 1970 and then direction photography at Japan Design Center from 1970 to He had always worked in the commercial photography field until 1990 when he began to create the artistic photographs, on view in this exhibition. These works are printed on specially made thick washi Japanese paper to which photo emulsion is then applied. The paper-making and the application of photo-emulsion are important aspects of the creative process. European church interior and exterior images, town and cityscapes are printed with intensified focus on infinitely monochromatic shades and shadows. To see something where nothing can be seen, uncovering and evoking unknown spaces with an antique pathos and to provoke one s imagination are the primary goals of Sumio s art. While travelling in Europe, he will come across a scene at a particular moment when light is creating shade and casts shadows; he is touched by the air of that particular moment and clicks the shutter of his camera. Inoue describes the subsequent dark room work as a painting process with photographic technique and explains that it is about accumulating spiritual experiences. They are lyrical fragments of inspired spaces reworked and then offered to us with the granular interior spaces. Inoue had held prestigious exhibition world-wide and has artworks in various important galleries in Tokyo, New York, Paris. He has exhibited his works in Passion for Life Art events in the summer of 2006 in Florence, Italy and in February 2007 in Chetumal, Mexico.

Città e vedute di città sono stampate focalizzando l intensità su infinite ombre monocromatiche e sfumature. Vedere qualcosa dove niente si può vedere e stimolare l immaginazione del singolo è il primo obiettivo del suo studio. I suoi lavori sono tinteggiati in color seppia. I negativi, come fossero schizzi di un album, attendono il processo di stampa nella camera oscura. Attraverso intuizione e ispirazione, seleziona un immagine tra i negativi, stampa l immagine su molti fogli e infine ne seleziona una stampa. 42 Maz Jackson A British tempera painter, Maz Jackson graduated from the Norwich School of Art in She describes her art, I have a deep interest in traditions of practice, colour, line, mark-making and edge. Imagery springs from anything that excites: communication, touch, tension, flight, landscape, love, laughter, the spaces between and things sacred. Using fifteenth century methods, the imagery is worked up in tempera comprised of ground mineral pigments mixed with egg yolk and distilled water. The tempera is then laid down on gessoed oak panels between gilded shapes of gold leaf. and Each process is extremely time consuming and the paintings can take two or three years to complete; in this time she is continually creating drawings of her thoughts and ideas which in turn form stimuli for another painting. Her recent exhibition have been in London, Tokyo, Osaka, Hamburg, Rotterdam, Paris and New York and she participated in the 2003 and 2005 Florence Biennale of Contemporary Art. She featured as the arts adviser and practitioner in the popular 2004 BBC 1 television series art Rolf on Art. She is a prize-winning member of Society of Graphic Fine Art and is the former Chair of British and European Society of Tempera Painters. In February 2007 Maz exhibited for the first time with Passion for Life Art in México.

46 Catalina Ochoa Catalina Ochoa was born in 1969 in León, Mexico. She has studied painting since she was 10 years old and at the age of 11 she had already won the Children s Painting Municipal Contest. She continued to study painting and drawing while following a Communications course at university. She then won a scholarship at the Technical Institute Instituto Tecnologico de Estudios Superiores in Monterrey and while there, created the scenery and designed the publicity posters for the University s Theater and opera. During her time there, she also participated in various group exhibition at other Universities. Since 1987 Catalina has exhibited her works in many collectives exhibition and in 2003 participated in International Florence Biennale of Contemporary Art. In 2004 she returned to Florence, exhibiting at the Galleria Mentana and for the first time in the US, in Detroit, Michigan. She has a permanent show of her work at the Hospital Angeles at León, Mexico.

Dal 1987 ha partecipato a varie collettive in Messico e nel 2003 approda a Firenze esponendo alla Biennale Internazionale di Arte Contemporanea. L anno successivo torna ad esporre a Firenze, alla Galleria Mentana e per la prima volta negli USA a Detroit, Michigan. All Hospital Angeles de León, Messico si trova una sua esposizione permanente.

50 Antonio Pugliano Antonio Pugliano was born in 1975 and lives and works in Calabria, Italy. After completing artistic high school, Pugliano received his diploma from the Academia delle Belle Arti, Catanzaro, Calabria. He began to exhibit his works in 1996 in individual and collective exhibition both in his native Calabria and in the important artistic cities of Florence and Rome, all of which have contributed to his success on the national art scene, impressive for such a young artist. His figurative style painting is immediate and graphic. His inspiration is often but not always from religious subject matter, depicted in a contemporary way. The expressive nature of his personalities, Eve depicted as a blind woman, disciples listening to Jesus or Judas counting his money are all examples of the way in which Antonio Pugliano successfully portrays these biblical figures with a modern feel. One cannot say a modern setting because his figures are indeed further highlighted by the simple, often monochrome backgrounds, thereby revealing exactly where the artist s interests and indeed talent lie. These personalities depicted must be portraits of people he knows or has seen and studied in a public place, for their vivid reality and naturalism is startling. He may further add for our benefit a biblical symbol such as the apple from the tree in the painting of Adam and Eve for example, but it is included for narrative purposes only. With such definition and clarity, the viewer can but only be immediately drawn to the Antonio s work and his study of man. In February 2007, Pugliano exhibited his works in Passion for Life Art Mexico.

52 Antonio Pugliano nasce nel 1975, vive e lavora in Calabria. Dopo aver terminato il liceo artistico, Pugliano si diploma all Accademia delle Belle Arti di Catanzaro, Calabria. Nel 1996 inizia ad esporre le proprie opere sia in mostre personali che collettive, in Calabria, a Roma, a Firenze, mostre che hanno contribuito all affermarsi sulla scena nazionale e al successo di un così giovane artista. Il suo stile e immediato e grafico. Si ispira spesso, ma non sempre, a soggetti religiosi riprodotti in chiave contemporanea. La natura espressiva dei suoi soggetti, Eva dipinta come una donna cieca, i discepoli in ascolto di Gesù o Giuda che conta il suo denaro sono tutti esempi di come Pugliano riproduce con sensibilità moderna queste figure religiose. L ambientazione non si può dire moderna in quanto i suoi soggetti sono semplici, spesso con sfondi monocromatici ma che rivelano esattamente l interesse e il talento dell artista. I suoi soggetti sono così vivi e con un naturalismo così sorprendente che non possono che essere ritratti di conoscenti o di soggetti studiati in spazi aperti. I suoi dipinti con tanta precisione e definizione, svelano subito il suo lavoro di studio della natura. Nel 2007 ha partecipato a Passion for Life Art in Messico.

54 Edward Rilke Edward Rilke was born in 1972 in France. His father was Australian and mother French. He had a classical education being brought up near Saint Paul de Vence, in Provence but moved to Paris for his university education, studying modern languages at the Sorbonne. Rilke believes his mother instilled in him his love of art from an early age taking him regularly to local French towns such as Arles to teach him about Van Gogh and Picasso and to Paris to visit the many art museums. It was however, Rilke s own decision on finishing university to find his paternal roots in Australia and in particular to follow one of his passions scuba diving which is now his very successful fulltime career on the Great Barrier Reef. His particular love of photography grew after moving to Sydney in 1994 where he began to experiment using the new forms of technology available to him at the time. The strong colours that pervade his works in part look back to his youth in the 1980 s, the influence of his memories of life in the South of France, spring in Provence, summers by the sea, the palm trees lining the boulevards. Rilke merges these images with the use of modern technology. Indeed the images in themselves are simple and direct in their intrinsic beauty which Rilke unashamedly and joyously puts before the viewer. The fact that he creates multiple repetitive images only goes to enhance these aspects. Rilke has held several collective exhibition in Sydney and on the Great Barrier Reef and this is his first exhibition in Italy.

56 Edward Rilke nasce in Francia, nel 1972, da padre australiano e madre francese. Riceve un educazione tradizionale, cresciuto vicino a Saint Paul de Vence, in Provenza e trasferitosi a Parigi per studiare Lingue Moderne all Università La Sorbonne. Rilke deve la passione per l arte alla madre che fin da piccolo l ha fatto avvicinare a Van Gogh e a Picasso portandolo a visitare mostre o musei di Parigi. Al termine dell Università si reca in Australia per cercare le proprie radici paterne e per coltivare la sua grande passione, il diving, diventato adesso la sua occupazione a tempo pieno sulla Grande Barriera Corallina. Dopo essersi trasferito in Australia nel 1994 cresce la sua passione per la fotografia sperimentando le nuove tecnologie in materia. I forti colori che pervadono i suoi lavori derivano in parte dall adolescenza negli anni 80 e in parte dai ricordi del Sud della Francia, la primavera in Provenza, l estate al mare, le palme che fiancheggiavano i viali. Rilke fonde queste immagini con la tecnologia contemporanea, immagini semplici e dirette. Rilke le pone, spudoratamente e giocosamente, con la loro intrinseca bellezza, davanti allo spettatore. 58 Eugenio Riotto Eugenio Riotto was born in 1951 in Petralia Soprana, in the province of Palermo. In 1957 he moved to Hjères in the South of France with his family, where he discovered his vocation as an artist. In 1966 he returned to Italy moving to Viareggio where he met his teacher Carlo Oreste Stocco, pupil of Giacomo Grosso and ex-teacher at the Albertina Academy in Turin. Here, Riotto was taught history of art, life drawing, pastel and oil painting. At the age of 23, Riotto had his first contact with an art gallery in Viareggio where he was asked to paint marine scenes: the young artist refused. Having moved to Sarzana in Liguria, he participated in group exhibitions and then soon moved back to Tuscany in Pietrasanta, near Lucca. It is here that Riotto discovers sculpture. In reality Riotto had always been struck more by volume than by color, something that could be discerned in his painting. In order to depict the themes he considers most important - the psychology of man and his interior world - Riotto eliminates all that is superfluous, including anatomic detail. In the last ten years he has held personal exhibition at Pietrasanta, Camaiore, Pontremoli, Bologna and Krakow. Riotto s sculptures are exhibited in Florence, Rome, New York, Cannes and Capo Verde and most recently took part in a group exhibition in Argentina. On opening his own studio in 2004 in Pietrasanta, Riotto s personal artistic journey becomes more coherent and personal, favored unanimously by the art critics. The growing interest from the public confirmed the vitality of the path that Riotto decided to follow.

60 Eugenio Riotto nasce a Petralia Soprana (Palermo) il 12 giugno Pochi anni dopo si trasferisce con la famiglia a Roma e successivamente a Hyéres, in Costa Azzurra (Francia), dove scopre la propria vocazione artistica. Nel 1966 torna in Italia e si stabilisce a Viareggio. Qui incontra Carlo Oreste Strocco, allievo di Giacomo Grosso ed ex docente presso l Accademia Albertina di Torino, che gli insegna la storia dell arte, il disegno dal vero a carboncino, il disegno a pastello e la pittura ad olio. A 23 anni Riotto ha il primo contatto con una galleria d arte di Viareggio, che gli chiede di dipingere marine: il giovane artista rifiuta. Trasferitosi a Sarzana (Liguria), partecipa a esposizioni collettive, quindi torna in Toscana e si stabilisce a Pietrasanta (Lucca). È qui che si accosta alla scultura. In realtà, da sempre Riotto è colpito più dai volumi che dai colori, approccio già insito nelle sue opere pittoriche. Per esprimere i temi che più sente la psicologia dell uomo, il suo mondo interiore elimina tutto il superfluo, compreso il dettaglio anatomico. A partire dal 1993 realizza personali a Pietrasanta, Camaiore, Pontremoli, Bologna, Cracovia; sue opere sono esposte a Firenze, Roma, New York, Cannes, Capoverde e Argentina. Nel 2004 apre un proprio studio a Pietrasanta e inizia il suo percorso artistico più coerente e personale, salutato dal favore unanime della critica. L interesse crescente del pubblico conferma la vitalità della strada intrapresa.

62 Goga Trascierra Goca Trascierra was born in Mexico City into a family of artists, painters and sculptors: her grandparents were Emilio Guzman and Esther Hernandez who both received their diplomas from the Accademia di San Carlo, México; and her mother Esther Luz Guzman was a portrait and mural painter. It was especially from her mother that Goga learnt various pictoric techniques and at an early age Goga dedicated herself to landscapes and in particular skies, horizons and sunsets. The human figure gradually through time also became a protagonist of her works. She now generally uses oils, acrylics or mixed media. With an admirable use of colour, Goga places her figures in fantastic settings, with an dream-like dimension to them, representing scenes where intense emotion exudes from her figures through their expressive faces or eloquent glances. Continuing in the family tradition, she has also designed and realised various murals in Mexico, the US and in Italy, one of her most important being in acrylic and 13x7 metres long in the city of Gomez Palacio Durango, Mexico. She has also created several for important hotels in Cancun and Quintana Roo. In February 2007 Goga exhibited her work in Passion for Life Art in Chetumal, Mexico.

64 Goga Trascierra nasce a Messico City in una famiglia di artisti, pittori e scultori. I suoi nonni erano Emilio Guzman e Esther Hernandez, entrambi diplomati all Accademia di San Carlo, Messico. Fa un ammirevole uso del colore e inserisce le sue figure in ambienti fantastici. Rappresenta scene dove le intense emozioni trasudano dai volti espressivi e dagli sguardi eloquenti. Goga Trascierra ha realizzato, come vuole la tradizione della sua famiglia, murales in Messico, negli Stati Uniti e in Italia. Nel febbraio 2007 ha partecipato a Passion for Life Art in Chetumal, Messico.

66 Carlo Vitali Carlo Vitali was born in Florence, Italy. At an early age he frequented the studios of his Italian and foreign painter friends, until the beginning of the 1970 s when he met the Dutch artist Christiaan Snjiders. It was thanks to this maestro s friendship that Vitali studied color and composition theories in depth and at the same time he enrolled at the school of nude drawing under Prof. Mannucci. The background where Vitali places his objects is perhaps what distinguishes his works from others. It is alive: often he uses a wall as his background which give us the sensation of being so real that we have the desire to reach out and touch it. At the same time, however, his work seems to go towards the abstract in as much as the refined and precise attention given to the creation a scene of small, everyday objects, by Vitali himself, steals the stage. The intimacy of Vermeer merges with the colours of Piero della Francesca. Vitali has participated in many exhibition in Italy and abroad, obtaining important prizes and acknowledgements. His paintings are to be found in both Italian and worldwide collections. His work is catalogued at the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florence. He exhibited in Passion for Life Art in 2007 in Chetumal, Mexico.

68 Carlo Vitali è nato a Firenze, pittore da sempre, frequenta fin da giovanissimo studi di amici pittori italiani e stranieri fino a quando negli anni 70, incontra l artista olandese Christiaan Snijders grazie al quale approfondisce la teoria del colore e della composizione e allo stesso tempo sotto la guida del prof. Mannucci frequenta la scuola del nudo. Lo sfondo ove Vitali colloca i suoi oggetti è forse il segno che contraddistingue la sua pittura. Uno sfondo vivo, spesso costituito da un muro cosi reale da darci la sensazione e il desiderio di toccarne l intonaco e al tempo stesso così astratto da costituire lo scenario ove si stagliano nitidi i piccoli oggetti di ogni giorno, che pur nella raffinata e precisa attenzione che Vitali dedica loro, si possono perdere in quello sfondo che ruba loro la scena per evidente desiderio dell autore. Il tratto di Vermeer lotta con i colori di Piero della Francesca, mentre il tempo consuma e stempera i contrasti. Vitali ha partecipato a varie rassegne d arte in Italia e all estero ottenendo premi e riconoscimenti. Sue opere si trovano presso collezioni private in Italia e nel mondo. 70 Suly B. Wolff Suly B. Wolff was born in San Paulo, Brazil, in Drawn to painting as a child she attended drawing classes for the first time at the age of 12. She moved to Israel in 1976 and in 1981 began to study interior design. For the 20 years that followed, she attended various art courses including jewelry making, drawing, various painting techniques, pottery making etc. For over 10 years now she paints every day and has had many exhibition in Israel and around the world. Living in two opposite corners of the world, Brazil and Israel, Suly has contact with diverse groups of people and different environments, both of which have offered her new emotions, and the results we see in the colorful nature of her canvases. Her works are of varying sizes, the majority are oil on canvas, even though she sometimes differs her technique. She paints her life story so that viewer can see and live the aesthetic sense that she wishes to express, making her life story theirs. Suly has exhibited her work in Brazil, USA, Israel, Europe and India.

72 Suly B. Wolff nasce a San Paolo, Brasile, nel Viene attratta dalla pittura fin da bambina e frequenta corsi di disegno fin dai 12 anni. Nel 1976 si trasferisce in Israele e dal 1981 studia Interior Design. Per i successivi venti anni frequenta vari corsi d'arte. Dipinge da più di dieci anni e si possono trovare sue opere esposte in Israele e in tutto il mondo. Avendo vissuto in due angoli opposti del mondo come Brasile e Israele è stata a contatto con diverse società e una diversa natura che le hanno fatto vivere emozioni che si ritrovano nelle sue tele colorate. Le sue opere sono di varia grandezza, la maggior parte olio su tela anche se usa diverse tecniche. Dipinge la storia della sua vita così che lo spettatore possa v edere e vivere il senso estetico che vuole esprimere, facendo loro la storia della sua vita. Ha partecipato a mostre in Brasile, USA, Israele, Europa, India.
