Avanti Second Edition McGraw Hill Lab Manual and Workbook Quia online program Recommended: Adorni/Primorac, English Grammar for Students of Italian Harper-Sansoni-Collins Dictionary LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT: Students must complete a language through the intermediate level (courses numbered 30). Students starting a language at Drew will require three semesters of language study to reach this proficiency level. It is highly recommended and expected that these three semesters be completed consecutively. EXPECTED STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: Italian 1 is the first semester of a three-semester course sequence for the fulfillment of the College language requirement. At the end of this course most students should be able to reach a Novice Low-Mid proficiency as defined by ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) in the following areas: Listening: Students will be able to understand the instructor s explanations, simple dialogues on a variety of situations, short movie clips and songs with the grammar structures learned. Speaking: Students will be able to ask for simple explanations, introduce themselves, talk about their habits, their family, describe people, make simple statements in the past. Reading: Students will be able to read short and authentic texts related to everyday life topics from the book Avanti. Writing: Students will be able to write paragraphs on the topics and structures covered in class. Cultural awareness: Students will start to notice differences and similarities between Italian culture and their own.

3 EXAMS and GENERAL POLICIES: There will be one Midterm, one Final Exam, listening comprehension activities, short written assignments, and one final project. Tests will be administered at the end of each chapter. They will include grammar, vocabulary, and oral comprehension. There will be also some pop-quizzes to test the Italian vocabulary. Make-up exams and tests will be given only for REAL medical or personal emergencies. A doctor s note will be required. There is also a mandatory audio and multimedia component, QUIA, ( It will be assigned after each class and reinforce the concepts covered in class. Your instructor will explain how to use this program. We cannot stress enough the importance of keeping up with this mandatory multimedia program as it provides essential reinforcement to class work. ATTENTION: Students homework assignments will be posted on and sent through . STUDENTS SHOULD STUDY THE MATERIAL TO BE COVERED IN CLASS BEFORE EACH LESSON AND MEMORIZE THE WORDS AT THE END OF EACH CHAPTER ( VOCABOLARIO) SO THAT THEY CAN TALK AND UNDERSTAND WHAT IS SAID IN CLASS. This preparation will make you feel more confident, more at ease in class and better able to participate actively and ready to enjoy learning Italian! The only way to learn to speak a language is by speaking it, so Italian will be used at all times in class, and students are expected to use it as well. English will be kept at a minimum, and only for administrative issues. PARTICIPATION: Attendance is not considered participation. You are graded upon active participation in class: questions, answers, group work, volunteering, etc. (You are not graded on your mistakes, but on your willingness to speak and interact with your instructor and your fellow classmates.) If you do not yet have this software, it is available as a free download at To view the Avanti! Beginning Italian, 2nd edition playlist: 1) Open itunes and connect to the itunes store. 2) Find and click the Music link within the store. 3) Go to More in Music and click on the imix link. 4) Select imix Name (on the dropdown search menu) and then enter Avanti2 in the Search for box. MINOR & MAJOR: The Italian Minor requires 20 credits (Italian 20, 30 and three upper-level courses at the 100-level). Students can also declare a

5 special major in Italian Studies (contact Prof. Occhipinti at for more information). ITALIAN CLUB: C.I.A.O. (Cultural Italian America n Organization) is a student-run organization dedicated to informing students about Italian and Italian-American culture to dispel common stereotypes while enjoying the Italian heritage and language. Activities include movie screenings, dinners, lectures, charity work, and performances. Some of C.I.A.O.'s activities for the fall '11 semester include: Lecture for Italian-American History Month (October), Holiday Bake Sale for Charity, Care Packages for the Troops, and a Performance at The Metropolitan Opera House. 6 ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY: Language acquisition is a skill requiring regular practice, especially in an introductory course where it is very easy to fall behind. Non-justified absences and lack of active participation during class and in the multimedia program will affect your performance and, ultimately, your grade. Three unexcused absences will lower your final grade by half a letter grade (a B+ will become a B for example) subsequent absences cost one letter grade each. Excused absences include religious holidays as well as serious illness (a doctor s note is required) or family emergencies. BE PUNCTUAL and try to arrive five minutes before the class starts. Late arrivals will disrupt the pace of the class and negatively affect your grade. Three late arrivals will be considered an absence. IMPORTANT: Cell phones must be turned off during class session. Absolutely no text-messaging or . No laptops in class, unless it is required as part of a documented academic accommodation.
