1 PRACTICAL INFORMATION (Travel, Accommodation, Maps etc.) HOW TO GET TO BERGAMO landing in Bergamo Bergamo has an international airport that is situated at only 15 minutes by bus from the town centre: Orio al Serio airport - sometimes advertised as Milan-Orio al Serio, or Milan- BGY. From there you can take a bus to the city centre and the Upper Town (ca. 2), or a short taxi ride (ca ). landing in Milano Malpensa (1) or Milano Linate (2) airports Alternatively you can also fly either to Milano Malpensa or to Milano Linate. In this case you will then need to take a bus, train or taxi to Milano Centrale station and then the train to Bergamo station: (1) From Milano Malpensa airport to Milano Centrale station: i. bus: Malpensa Express or Malpensa Shuttle Air Pullman (Terminal 1; the same buses also call at Terminal 2): buy tickets from the driver standing by the door of the next bus to leave; buses leave every 20 mins from 6 to midnight every day for Milan Stazione Centrale (takes 50 mins; check that it goes to Centrale not to Cadorna station). Cost: ca. 5. ii. train (Malpensa Express): not advised if you're going to the Central train station: it takes 10 mins less than the bus, but goes to Cadorna station and then you have to get the underground to Centrale, so in the end it takes the same time and you have the hassle of getting the Metro; the train goes every half hour. Cost: ca. 10 (more if you pay on board). iii. taxi: quite expensive as the airport is some way out: around 50/60. (2) From Milano Linate airport to Milano Centrale station: bus or taxi to Stazione Centrale (takes 20 mins) 1

2 Train from Milano Centrale to Bergamo station Trains run every hour from Milano Centrale to Bergamo station from 7.20 to (except for a gap between 8.43 and 11.20); for more detailed information, see the timetable of the Italian Railway Company, - which has pages in English. Cost: ca. 5 (ca. 6 1st class) train tickets are probably the best bargains in Italy. ACCOMMODATION IN BERGAMO The seminar will be held in the Upper Town (Città Alta), but available beds are relatively few. If you wish to be close to the Conference venue, you are therefore advised to book well in advance. Rates in, inevitably subject to variation (checked at Easter 2007). 6 MISCELLANEOUS PRACTICAL MATTERS Public transport within Bergamo: if your hotel is in the Lower Town, you are strongly advised not to rely on a car, because parking in the Upper Town is highly restricted. All buses with the number 1 (1A, 1B, 1C, 1D), which pass through the city centre (Porta Nuova), and the funicular will take you to the Upper Town. Tickets cannot be bought on the bus, but are available at newsagents and tobacconists. They must be time-stamped by the yellow machine you will see when you board the bus; the green tickets ( urbano ) have a validity of 75 minutes from the time they are stamped regardless of distance travelled withn the central zone. Clocks. Italy is 1 hour ahead of GMT and BST. Electricity. The current in Italy is 220 volts. Post Offices. These are open Mon. - Fri a.m p.m. and Sat a.m p.m. Tobacconists also sell postage stamps. Please note that the Central Post Office (via Locatelli) stays open Mon. - Fri a.m. - 7 p.m. and Sat p.m p.m. Further information is available at the website Tourism.
