6 August 10, 2012 ITALY Italy Wineries P - Q See date & place of tasting in italics Growers / Wineries are in alphabetical order with area underneath Paolo Scavino Castiglione Falletto Piemonte Barolo Classico Tasted in the Carlton Club January 2018 The nose has brooding depth the palate a rich mix of black fruits sweet in the middle. There is an underlying freshness the mid palate quite firm but the tannins are fine and ripe. Weight of fruit at the back the mix of black cherry and black plum is rich with depth of flavour on the finish. Paccamora Marsala Sicily Nero d Avola Tasted at the Liberty tasting The Oval September 2015 Bright and fresh red fruits and bramble are very much in evidence on the nose. The palate has sweetness quite rich and fleshy in the middle but at the back there is a fresher feel and the finish lacks a bit of depth and richness. 7 ITALY August 10, 2012 The nose is fresh but has depth and the palate starts with greengage richness. It is lighter and fresher in the middle lime and lemon with flavours that last well. Panizzi San Gimignano Tuscany White Wines Vernaccia di San Gimignano Tasted in Tuscany Leathersellers Tour May 2015 Floral white flowered the nose is fresh the palate starts bright and citrusy. A touch of sweetness in the middle but at the back palate there is a spicy freshness and the finish racy mineral and citrusy. Cantine Paradiso Cerignola Puglia White Wines Posta Piana Bianco Bombino Bianco 70% Trebbiano 30% Tasted in Lilley November 2011 The nose is rich full of ripe pear and pineapple and this richness fills out the palate. Behind the fruit power there is some citrus freshness balancing. The back palate and finish are lovely and rich with lots of sweet ripe fruit a lovely mix of flavours. Posta Piana Uva di Troia Tasted in Lilley November 2011 Tasted at the Jockey Club Newmarket December 2011 Wild hedgerow fruits give lots of character on the nose with bramble backed by elderberry and bitter cherry. The palate has lots of flavour layers of fruit with sweetness underpinned by fresher racy flavours. The tannins feel ripe helping the sweetness on the mid palate but towards the back bitter red cherries refresh the finish. 8 August 10, 2012 ITALY Bitter chocolate, cocoa, black cherry and Bullace plum are all there on both nose and palate. The black fruit mix on the mid palate is lovely and complex the richness lots of cocoa balanced by the freshness of myrtle berry, black cherry and damson plum. The layers of freshness firmness and sweeter chocolate and coffee ensure complexity. Posta Piana Primitivo Tasted in Lilley November 2011 Tasted at the Jockey Club Newmarket December 2011 Although the nose is very black fruited deep and brooding there is fresher red cherry on the palate. There is a lovely richness in the middle fleshy fruit but under this there is some freshness a touch of red cherry the ripe fruit gives a lovely rich feel on the back palate. Il Paradosso Sicily White Wines Inzolia Chardonnay Tasted in Lilley January 2015 The nose is quite exotic fruity a touch of apricot and although the start of the palate has sweet fruit the mid palate is zesty fresh with a strong citrus character. There is a richer feel to the back palate pineapple just a hint of apricot but it finishes with lime and lemon freshness. Inzolia Chardonnay Tasted in Lilley January 2018 The nose is fresh with lime and lemon the palate starts light and fresh quite crisp in the middle. There is a hint of sweeter fruit towards the back tropical fruits but the citrus comes through refreshing the finish. Nero d Avola Shiraz Tasted in Lilley January 2015 Rich on the nose the start of the palate has ripe black fruits and chocolate. The mid palate is a bit chewy yet the bramble and mulberry mix does give more interest at the back and the finish has some black pepper spice. Parva Res Sicily Master of Wine: Derek Smedley 8

9 ITALY August 10, 2012 Nero d Avola Tasted in Lilley May 2014 The nose is packed with rich black fruit and coffee beans. The palate has power and depth of flavour the mainly black fruits enriched by dark chocolate, coffee and a hint of liquorice. The back palate has the richness of flavour to suit beef and venison but do keep some for the stronger flavoured cheeses. Nero d Avola Tasted in Lilley May 2014 The nose has black fruits and coffee and the palate rich fruit depth of flavour a mix of black cherry, liquorice and dark chocolate. There is freshness some red fruits cherry and redcurrant but it is the dark chocolate a great feature of the grape that is there on the finish. The depth of fruit yet freshness compliments pork and ham dishes. Nero d Avola Tasted in Lilley January 2016 There is a rich mix of fruits on the nose the black fruits dominating. The palate starts bright fresh lots of red cherry and bramble sweeter in the middle dark chocolate richness a hint of liquorice the tannins feel ripe mid suppleness. The back palate has a mix of fruits the black fruit richness backed by red cherry freshness. Nero d Avola Tasted in Lilley April 2016 One of Sicily s important grapes and this is a very typical example with its dominant black fruits, sweetness and richness on the palate chocolate, liquorice and coffee beans. There is balance with bilberry and bramble freshness lighter in the middle but the sweet fruit shows again at the back the finish rich with black plum and chocolate. Nero d Avola Tasted in Lilley May 2017 This classic Sicilian grape has a mix of flavours bright black fruits at the start rich sweet in the middle ripe black cherry backed by dark chocolate, liquorice and coffee beans. Layers of flavour the bramble freshness underpinned by rich, ripe black fruits the finish has depth and chocolate richness. 10 August 10, 2012 ITALY Terre Siciliane Comes from vineyards on Sicily s west coast it s nose vibrant and the palate has the freshness one finds in a grove of citrus fruits. The lime and lemon mix is backed by richer flavours nectarine and apricot a balance that makes it an easy drinking glass on its own but a wine that has enough depth of flavour to go well with the fish and chicken on the menu, ideal with salads and toasted Mozzarella. Passo deltempio Syrah Tasted in Lilley August 2015 Terre Siciliane Bright with red fruits on the nose the palate has the warmth of the Sicilian sun. Sweet ripe, supple bramble and black cherry seem to hide the red fruits but at the back there is a savoury freshness a mix of flavours that linger on the finish. The soft, ripe mid tannins make it easy to enjoy, no jarring edges, the depth of fruit makes it a great partner to steaks, burgers and pasta, the right glass for toasted ham and cheese sandwiches. Azienda Agricola Pelassa Roero Piemonte Mario s Rosso Babera Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Tasted at the Royal College of Physicians March 2015 Bramble freshness on the nose the start of the palate is quite light. The mid palate has a fleshy richness sweet cassis some damson plum and black cherry a mix of flavours. Rich at the back the finish is lighter fresher with flavours that linger. 11 ITALY August 10, 2012 Bitter cherry on the nose nutty on the palate the mainly red fruits are fresh. There is a richer feel in the middle but very fresh at the back and quite firm and tight on the finish. Pellegrino Marsala & Pantelleria Sweet White Wines Passito di Pantelleria Tasted in Innholders Hall February 2016 The nose is fragrant but light and the start of the palate quite fresh tangerines and tropical fruits. Richer in the middle ripe apricot but the back palate lacks real richness. Villa di Petrognano Chianti Rufina Tuscany Villa di Petrognano Tasted at the Liberty Tuscan tasting London June 2012 Sweet red fruits give richness on the nose and the start of the palate. The mid palate is lighter slightly fresher with lots of raspberry and mulberry and a nice length of flavour. Villa di Petrognano Pomino Tasted at the winery May 2016 Rich fruit on the nose the palate has fleshy suppleness the fruit ripe with a mix of black plum and ripe black cherry. It feels lighter at the back with freshness on the finish. Villa di Petrognano Pomino Tasted at the Liberty tasting Dartmouth House London September 2016 The fruit is ripe the nose rich with sweet fruits fleshy black fruits. 12 August 10, 2012 ITALY Petrolo Colli Aretini Tuscany Torrione Tasted at the Liberty Tuscan tasting London June 2012 The nose has an attractive leafy herbal fragrance with a mix of red fruits. The mid palate is sweet with a mix of flavours with juicy strawberry coming through on the finish. Torrione Tasted at the Liberty Tuscan tasting London June 2012 The nose is fresh red fruited and quite fragrant with sweeter slightly richer flavours filling out the mid palate. Towards the back there is an attractive herbal spiciness. Torrione Tasted at the Liberty tasting Dartmouth House London September 2016 Light fresh red fruits the nose has a leafy herbal quality the palate the freshness of raspberry and redcurrant. There is mid sweetness more depth of flavour but it finishes fresh fruited and slightly dry. Baggina Val d Arno di Sopra Tasted at the Liberty tasting Dartmouth House London September 2016 The fruit on the nose is ripe the palate has sweet fruit depth of flavour in the middle with a mix of red and black fruits. Supple and fleshy at the back the finish has richness and ripe fruited sweetness. BagginAnfora Val d Arno di Sopra Tasted at the Liberty tasting Dartmouth House London September 2016 The nose is fragrant fresh with redcurrant and raspberry the palate light ethereal the back palate has a strong red fruit influence fragrant fresh with good length. Galatrone Merlot 100% Tasted at the Liberty Tuscan tasting London June 2012 There is a black plum richness on the nose and palate sweet ripe and fleshy. The supple voluptuous fleshiness is back by bramble a lovely mix of flavours beautifully balanced. 13 ITALY August 10, 2012 The nose is rich sweet and ripe the start of the palate fleshy but there is an underlying freshness with mulberry and red cherry but sweet damson plum is there at the back the finish has richness and depth. Picco del Sole Sardinia Cannonau di Sardegna Tasted in the Green Man Italian Restaurant Clophill May 2015 The nose has a mix of bright red fruits but the palate is sweet, supple and lush in the middle with a nice depth of flavour. The back palate is lighter the red fruits fresh yet the finish has depth richness with fleshy ripe strawberry and mulberry. Pico Maccario Mombaruzzo Monferrato Piemonte White Wines Estrosa Bianco Chardonnay Sauvignon Blanc Favorita Tasted in Lilley September 2008 There is a lovely floral lemon zest to the nose, hints of gooseberry backed by lime. The palate fills out with sweeter more of a white peach and tropical fruit character, all this giving an attractive weight of fruit. The floral freshness shows well on the long finish. Estrosa Bianco Chardonnay Sauvignon Blanc Favorita Tasted in Lilley September 2009 There is a mass of rich fruit on the nose and this mix of pineapple and apricot fleshes out the palate. Underpinning the lush fruit is a nutty freshness that lifts the flavours on the mid palate and gives a brighter feel towards the back. Oak is in evidence but rather than overpowering it adds some complexity. 14 August 10, 2012 ITALY The nose has lots of sweet fruit, ripe bramble backed by some cassis with underlying red fruits. The palate starts quite rich but there is a firm feel to the mid-palate, a dry nutty almond kernel character. Lots of black fruit pushes through towards the back leaving the end richer. It is showing quite a lot of maturity. Cantamerli Monferrato Rosso Barbera Cabernet Sauvignon Freisa Tasted in Lilley September 2009 There is a lot happening on the nose with black plum very much in evidence backed by liquorice and fresher bramble. The power of the black fruit compote enriches the mid palate and although the tannins are firm there is enough sweetness to the fruit to overcome this. The layers of plum and sloe are refreshed by the underlying bilberry. Lavignone Barbera D Asti Tasted in Lilley September 2008 The mass of ripe blackberry and bilberry packs out of the nose. There is a lighter more redcurrant feel to the palate, the ripe fruit underpinned by a streak of acidity that lifts the flavours. The bitter sweet mix all adds to the complexity giving an excitement to the long finish Lavignone Barbera D Asti Tasted in Lilley September 2009 There is a great deal happening on the nose with first bright red cherry and then sweeter blackberry vying for dominance. The palate is full of sweet fruit, layers of flavour giving lots of complexity. The mix of blackberry and damson is refreshed by mulberry and cherry, the sweetness so well balanced by the freshness. The flavours last well on the finish. Tre Roveri Barbera D Asti Tasted in Lilley September 2008 The mix of fruits, first damson then bramble is sweet and ripe. The richness of the nose is apparent on the palate fleshing it out. Under the sweetness there is lovely acidity all adding to the complex mix. Lots of fruit shows on the finish leaving a rich compote of flavours at the back. Tre Roveri Barbera D Asti Superiore Tasted in Lilley September 2009 Blackberries abound backed by black cherry giving an enticing complexity to the nose. It is all black tar rich on the palate, a powerful mix of flavours but there is enough freshness from the black cherry to lighten the fleshiness and brighten up the finish. 15 ITALY August 10, 2012 White Wines Soave Tasted at the Royal College of Physicians September 2011 The fruit on the nose has richness and depth of flavour with the white peach sweetness balanced by fresher greengage. The palate mirrors the nose rich fruit at the start with freshness behind giving it an attractive balance. Soave Tasted at the Royal College of Physicians September 2012 The nose has a mix of flavours some rich pineapple then fresher flavours grapefruit with a touch of lime. The start of the palate is fresh quite light and although there are richer fruits at the back yet the finish has the freshness of citrus. Soave Classico Garganega 85% Trebbiano di Soave 15% Tasted on Board Sea Cloud August 2014 Tasted at the Farr tasting Boodles April 2015 The nose has depth the palate sweet fruit grapefruit a touch of greengage then at the back citrus cuts in lime and lemon freshness. It fills out a bit on the finish with slightly more depth of sweet fruit. Soave Classico Calvarino Garganega Trebbiano Tasted at the Carlton Club July 2011 The nose has lots of lovely rich fruit with fresh quite crisp flavours coming through on the mid palate. Towards the back the ripe apricot that features is underpinned by fresh grapefruit. Calverino Gargenega 85% Trebbiano di Soave 15% Tasted on Board Sea Cloud August 2014 The nose has depth of fruit pineapple a touch of melon but the mid palate is fresher citrusy. There is a richer feel at the back but it finishes with flinty mineral freshness lean long directional. Sweet White Wines Recioto di Soave Le Colombare Tasted at Lincoln s Inn October 2013 Orange peel and ripe apricot enrich the nose and the start of the palate is sweet rich with ripe flavours. Tangerine gives a mid freshness a more delicate feel but the back palate and finish have depth richness and the sweetness of ripe tropical fruits. 16 August 10, 2012 ITALY Tasted at the Royal College of Physicians October 2017 Figs and dates the nose is rich with depth of flavour the start of the palate sensuous and ripe fruited. There is mid freshness some balancing tangerine and although lighter at the back it finishes with the richness of candied peel. Pietradolce Mount Etna Pietradolce Etna Rosso Nerello Mascalese 100% Tasted in Lilley March 2016 Light and fragrant with bitter cherry and hazel nuts. The palate is bright sliced strawberry and brushwood nutty at the back the finish has a mix of dried fruits and bitter cherries. Pillastro Puglia Primitivo Tasted in Shillington August 2018 The nose has a rich mix of black fruits the palate fleshy and full bodied with dark chocolate and black plums. More blackberry towards the back a hint of freshness the finish though has depth rich ripe fruit. Pio Cesare Alba Piemonte White Wines Arneis Tasted at the Maison Marques et Domaines tasting January 2014 Light leafy citrusy the nose is fresh fragrant and the start of the palate light. There is mid sweetness more depth of flavour but at the back the freshness wins through with citrus apple and herbal leafiness. Chardonnay Piodilei Master of Wine: Derek Smedley 16

17 ITALY August 10, 2012 Tasted at the Grandi Marchi tasting Vintners Hall September 2010 The nose is fresh but has a good weight of rich fruit at the back. Crisp apple is backed by richer greengage giving a complex mix of flavours on the palate first sweet rich and creamy then spicy freshness. The fruit lasts well on the back palate. Chardonnay Piodilei Tasted at the Maison Marques et Domaines tasting January 2014 Fresh on the nose but the palate is sweet ripe fruited with melon and greengage. Under the creamy ripe fruited flavours there is enough apple and citrus to balance and refresh. The finish though has the richness of ripe fruit. Gavi Tasted at the Grandi Marchi tasting Grocers Hall September 2011 The nose has a racy crispness with a mix of limes, apples and grapefruit. The mid palate is sweeter but slightly lacks depth of flavour. The finish is fresh but quite light. Gavi Tasted at the Maison Marques et Domaines tasting January 2014 Although the nose is light fresh with lime and minerals the palate has more depth and fruit sweetness. The finish is long fine fresh fruited with an attractive flinty quality. Barbera d Alba Barbera 100% Tasted at the Grandi Marchi tasting Grocers Hall September 2011 Blackberry is to the fore on the nose lovely and sweet. The ripeness of the fruit gives a fleshy richness on the mid palate but towards the back the richness fleshiness is balanced by the underlying bilberry freshness. Barbera d Alba Barbera 100% Tasted at the Maison Marques et Domaines tasting January 2014 Brambles hedgerow fruits dominate the nose an attractive mix of flavours. The fruit is ripe the mid palate sweet but the richness the black cherry middle is balanced by the freshness that comes through at the back. Barbera d Alba Fides Barbera 100% Tasted at the Maison Marques et Domaines tasting January 2014 Sweet and ripe fruited the nose is fleshy and rich and the palate has black plum and black cherry depth and power. 18 August 10, 2012 ITALY Nebbiolo Nebbiolo 100% Tasted at the Maison Marques et Domaines tasting January 2014 Both nose and palate have a strong red fruited character some bitter red cherry. There is mid sweetness more depth and richness ripe tannins adding to the fleshiness but at the back the red fruits dominate and give a lighter feel to the finish. Barbaresco Nebbiolo 100% Tasted at the Grandi Marchi tasting Grocers Hall September 2011 The mix of fruits on the nose is rich and ripe. Black fruits dominate the start of the palate with some rich strawberry showing through towards the back. There is a nice balance of flavours layers of fruit giving complexity and the slightly nutty cherry lingers on the finish. Barbaresco Nebbiolo 100% Tasted at the Definitive Italian tasting June 2013 Tasted at the Maison Marques et Domaines tasting January 2014 The nose has a floral fragrant red fruited freshness and the start of the palate is quite light. There are richer fruits on the mid palate underpinned by firm tannins yet the finish is lighter red fruited with a hazel nut almond mix. Barbaresco Il Bricco Nebbiolo 100% Tasted at the Definitive Italian tasting June 2013 Tasted at the Maison Marques et Domaines tasting January 2014 Although the nose has some lovely floral fragrances the palate has depth and richness of flavour. Red fruits tend to dominate but behind bramble and bilberry add complexity. The finish has a nice depth and richness of flavour. Barolo Nebbiolo 100% Tasted at the Grandi Marchi tasting Grocers Hall September 2011 Despite the depth of flavour the richness of the black fruits on the palate there is some red cherry freshness that gives a slightly lighter feel towards the back and a lovely flowing elegance on the finish. 19 ITALY August 10, 2012 The nose has all the fragrances of a summer rose bed and the start of the palate is light fresh fruited and fragrant. Sweet fruit enriches the mid palate depth of flavour backed by firm but fine tannins. The finish is long fresh fruited with ripe fruit right at the back Barolo Nebbiolo 100% Tasted at the Accademia del Barolo tasting November 2014 Rich and ripe the nose is deep the palate full of brooding black fruited power. Ripe tannins add to the suppleness the rich black fruits underpinned by freshness balancing and adding to the complexity. The rich mix of flavours lasts well on the finish. Barolo Ornato Tasted at the Grandi Marchi tasting Vintners Hall September 2010 The nuttiness of maturity is there on the nose underpinned by a mix of red and black cherry. The mix of fruits on the palate is lovely and complex deep and profound. Freshness and cedar wood towards the back lighten and give an elegant feel to the finish. Barolo Ornato Tasted at the Grandi Marchi tasting Vintners Hall September 2010 Black fruits, roses and tar all feature on the nose. The fruit is ripe rich and profound. There are tannins in evidence but they feel ripe giving structure but allowing the fruit to flesh out mid and back palate. Under the rich black fruits are some fresher reds giving the feeling of elegance on the finish. Barolo Ornato Nebbiolo 100% Tasted at the Definitive Italian tasting June 2013 Tasted at the Maison Marques et Domaines tasting January 2014 Tasted at the Accademia del Barolo tasting November 2014 The nose has a floral charm and the start of the palate has fresh fruits some red fruits, some bramble and an almond bitterness. Sweet and rich fruited in the middle there is depth of flavour a powerful mix with black fruits giving depth at the back and lots of black cherry filling out the finish. Barolo Ornato Nebbiolo 100% Tasted at the Accademia del Barolo tasting November 2014 Fragrant on the nose a bed full of summer roses and the start of the palate is fresh quite light with a mix of red and black fruits. 20 August 10, 2012 ITALY Planeta Buonivini Winery Noto Sicily White Wines La Segreta Bianco Grecanico 50% Chardonnay 30% Viognier 10% Fiano 10% Tasted on Board Sea Cloud August 2014 Citrus fresh on the nose quite light on the start of the palate but the mid palate is richer with a mix of greengage and melon. There is an underlying freshness hints of lime and grapefruit that balance the sweetness and give a slightly lighter feel on the back palate but the finish is rich ripe fruited with an aromatic spiciness. There are several wines under the Poggio Anima label made in different parts of Italy. White Wines Greco Gabriel Basillicata Tasted at the Royal College of Physicians November 2013 There is a lot of character on the nose with oranges and tangerines and the start of the palate has lots of rich flavours. There is a balancing freshness some citrus and apple that gives a lighter racier feel to the back palate. Grillo Uriel Sicily Tasted at Lincoln s Inn October 2014 Lime fresh on the nose the palate has a flinty mineral purity. Hints of tropical fruits give a richer feel to the mid palate with citrus showing at the back very fresh and slightly hard. Light at the back the finish has flinty mineral freshness. Complex layers of flavour a mix of citrus fruits gives freshness on the back palate the finish is bright with a hint of almonds. Lighter towards the back a red cherry redcurrant mix but it fills out on the finish with sweet ripe black cherry. Sangiovese Belial Tasted at the Royal College of Physicians March 2016 Bright red fruits the nose is fresh the start of the palate has a raspberry red cherry mix. The tannins are fine the mid palate sweet but at the back there is a fruit salad of red fruits and the finish is light and fresh. Firm black cherry is backed by sloe the back palate still quite hard but there is rich fruit showing on the finish. The mid palate is deep profound with layers of fruit giving interest and complexity. There is freshness towards the back that gives an attractive elegance on the finish. The mid concentration is balanced by some red fruited freshness and the layers of flavour give lots of complexity. There is some fresh fruit at the back a good balance but the sweet fruit is there on the finish depth of flavour. Rich and supple at the back the finish is slightly fresher and lighter. Madre Sangiovese 50% Cabernet Sauvignon 50% Tasted at the winery Leathersellers Tour May 2015 The Cabernet appears to dominate with a strong blackcurrant character. Firm in the middle the tannins supporting but not aggressive and although it feels richer at the back the finish is quite lean and tight. Poggio Al Tesoro Bolgheri Tuscany White Wines Vermentino Solosole Tasted at the Royal College of Physicians September 2012 The nose is herbal very autumn leaf quite fresh. The palate is richer with lots of pineapple at the start but teh mid palate has soem citrus freshness the richness of the pineapple comes through towards the back giving more depth on the finish. Sondraia Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Cabernet Franc Tasted at the Liberty Tuscan tasting London June 2012 The nose has lots of rich flavours with sweet fruit filling out the palate. Black fruits tend to dominate but there are red in evidence all quite sweet and this mix enriches the back palate. Sondraia Cabernet Sauvignon 65% Merlot 25% Cabernet Franc 10% Tasted at the Carlton Club February 2013 Cassis and black cherry give a lovely rich mix on the nose and depth on the start of the palate. The black plum of Merlot is ripe and fleshy and although towards the back there is bilberry freshness the finish has black fruited richness.
